My purpose in this Chapter is to shed some new light on typology. To do this, I have chosen to di... more My purpose in this Chapter is to shed some new light on typology. To do this, I have chosen to discuss typology hermeneutically rather than historically. What is the difference between a ‘hermeneutical’ and a ‘historical’ approach? To put it very briefly we may say that for a hermeneutical approach the primary reality is language and not history, as language rather than history is the ‘home of meaning’. In the following threefold division of the ‘hermeneutics of typology’ I am following a threefold division of hermeneutics invented by some eighteenth-century German Pietists. For them the three phases of hermeneutics were: (1) ars intelligendi (the art of understanding); (2) ars explicandi (the art of explanation); (3) ars applicandi (the art of application). Thus the section on language may correspond to ‘understanding’; the section on meaning to ‘explanation’; and the section on reading to ‘application’. There is, however, an organic interrelationship between these phases as if they merged into one another and therefore any arbitrary separation of one phase from other would do violent damage to the hermeneutic texture.

I have always radically rejected the 'literal inter pretation' of the Bible because it has always appeared to me as a synonym for literal-mindedness, verbal inspiration or the fun damentalist reading. My recent hermeneutical and literary critical investigations into the meaning of biblical texts, however, have convinced me that a rediscovery of the proper sense of the literal sense is unavoidable. Therefore, the purpose of the present paper is a revisiting of the nature of the "literal sense" or what Frank Kermode, quoting Wallace Stevens, has called the "plain sense of things". (Kermode, 1986).

In the round sanctuary of the Lutheran Church of Willmar, Minnesota there is an oak frieze encirc... more In the round sanctuary of the Lutheran Church of Willmar, Minnesota there is an oak frieze encircling the sanctuary containing in gold-leaf letters 78 names of “the cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12: 1) from Bible and from the history of the Church. The list begins with the name of Enoch and ends with that of Ordass, the only person who was still alive when the carving was made in the 1960s. Lajos Ordass (1901–1978) was the Bishop of the Hungarian Lutheran Church from 1945 until his death in 1978, i.e. for 33 years. However, he could exercise his office for altogether less than 5 years; between 1945 and 1948 and between 1956 and 1958. The Communists, with the help of collaborators in his own Church, forced him twice to live in total isolation, first for 6 years (1950–1956) following his release from prison; and secondly for 20 years (1958–1978) following his second and final removal from office in 1958.
