Santa lucia

Since 1 Mar 1967, the island of Saint Lucia has used something like this flag. They've made minor changes since, most recently in 2002 when they changed the colors.

Saint Lucy, virgin martyr who was one of the earliest Christian saints to achieve popularity. Because of various traditions associating her name with light, she came to be thought of as the patron of sight and was depicted by medieval artists carrying a dish containing her eyes.

"Hallow the vespers and December of our life, O martyred Lucy: Console our solstice with your friendly day." – from Thomas Merton's poem for St Lucy. This statue of the saint from Catania who was martyred under the persecutions of Diocletian c.304 is in a church in Boston.

St Lucy's Day Lussinatta took place on December 13. Lussi was a demon/witch who rode in the air with her followers called Lussiferda. Trolls and evil spirits and the dead where activeoutside and children who were bad could be taken away but Lussi who could sweep down the chimney and carry them away. If the family did not prepare for yule she would punish them. People stayed up all night to guard themselves from the evil lurking outside.

This refers to another legend in which Lucy's eyes were put out by Diocletian as part of his torture. The legend concludes with God restoring Lucy's eyes.
