The India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) recently concluded its seminar series for utility professionals on my Short List of Climate Actions That Will Work with a session on why hydrogen for energy is a distraction that only serves to perpetuate the fossil fuel industry. As always, thanks to the ISGF and founder Reji Kumar Pillai for allowing me to assist India in my small way to thread the needle of prosperity and lower carbon. Lightly edited transcript, slides and video: https://lnkd.in/giUS4tpK Despite the ongoing hype, hydrogen remains a costly and inefficient energy solution compared to electrification and other alternatives. In the seminar, I outlined why hydrogen is not viable for widespread energy use. Its production, particularly green hydrogen, requires vast amounts of renewable energy and critical minerals, making it expensive. Storage and transportation also add significant costs due to hydrogen's diffuse nature, requiring high-pressure systems or extreme cooling. These inefficiencies make hydrogen far more expensive than direct electrification, especially for transportation and grid storage. While hydrogen has applications in industries like (declining) refining and fertilizer production, where decarbonization is essential, it will never be a practical choice for mainstream energy needs. Electrification, batteries, and other established technologies remain far more cost-effective and scalable. My India seminar series under the auspices of the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) continues with a focus on grid storage. Full transcript and slides & video: https://lnkd.in/g8-UwPVD Three things emerged. Recently I published a reaction to a reaction on battery swapping. It can work if the batteries can be hoisted by hand such as in 2- and 3-wheelers, and it can work on same vehicle, same service load, same location, big fleets such as cement trucks where $1.1 million automated swapping stations in depots can be supported. When supporting multiple classes or manufacturers of vehicles, it falls apart. Truck stops aren't going to see swapping, but will see battery buffering. Gogoro was trotted out, as it always as is, but it's a typical SPAC disaster, with a collapsed stock price, losing $70 million a year. Then there's NIO of course, which so far is apparently succeeding where Tesla failed years ago, but I suspect that's short-lived. More significantly, China's fleet operators are buying almost 50% of trucks with swap-capable configurations. Data on how many are swapping is unknown, but my expectation that only the ones that meet the conditions above are. The ISGF studied this years ago and convinced the government to require two- and three-wheelers to be sold without batteries. Now there are a bunch of non-standard swapping firms, with swapping stations in every village. It's imperfect, but the vehicles are much cheaper and firms have filled the void. That's a place where regulation enabled swapping and the spread of vehicles of the size it works for. Still, lots of plug-in vehicles in India as well. Another point of discussion was vehicle-to-grid. I'm bearish on V2G, for a bunch of reasons explained in my articles on the subject and indeed in the transcript of the seminar. The ISGF is debating this, with some senior members pro, and others saying that school bus fleets that have spiky, non-peak service days are one of the few suitable use cases. The ISGF is running an experiment on this, and as I always agree, I could be wrong. Finally, there's the question of pumped hydro. The ISGF a few years ago did a grid storage requirement study and said, at least then, that India should lean heavily on batteries for grid storage due to the constraints on pumped hydro. It's built a lot of battery storage on its grid, as has every other country now. But early grid storage requirements are for fast response and power, and end stage requirements don't require more fast response storage or significant power, but do require massive energy. I urged the ISGF to return to the subject to explore 2030 and later requirements as lead times on pumped hydro are long. Coal India Limited (CIL) is expanding its renewable energy portfolio, targeting 5 GW of #solarpower capacity as part of a broader goal to reach 10 GW. The initial plan includes generating 1.5 GW from solar panels at their mining sites, with the remaining 3.5 GW developed in collaboration with state governments in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. In addition to solar, CIL is investing in pump storage projects to balance energy supply and demand efficiently. The company is also diversifying into critical minerals, having won a graphite mining auction in Madhya Pradesh. India's Renewable Energy Efforts Hit Roadblocks: 30 GW Capacity Unable to Secure Buyers Came across the below newspaper article, which highlights the lack of power purchase agreements (PPAs) and power supply agreements (PSAs), causing challenges for India's renewable energy sector, as approximately '30 GW' of capacity is still unsold with no takers / buyers. Solar projects that are a bit older are having a harder time finding purchasers, which is a really worrying issue. As per the report, one reason why agreements are taking longer to be signed is because industry is waiting for renewable energy tariffs that are meant to harmonize power pricing. The backlog is also being exacerbated by concerns about transmission links and connectivity. The Government's goal is to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil based energy capacity by 2030 and to tender 50 GW of green power projects every year till FY28. But other projects with lower tariffs are entering the market, and older ones might not be able to survive if agreements are further delayed. To resolve these difficulties and achieve India's renewable energy targets, the RE sector is demanding immediate attention. The entire potential of renewable power in the country can only be realized with uniform rates and increased grid connectivity. Carbon pricing is essential, spreading rapidly and carbon border adjustment mechanisms are following quickly. This past week saw another seminar in my series with Indian utility professionals under the auspices of the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) at the invitation of its long-serving president Reji Kumar Pillai. Linked are the slides and full transcript. https://lnkd.in/gpZ5MFrN Carbon pricing just adds all of the costs to transactions in markets, not allowing some organizations and firms to be free riders because a key waste stream with big impacts is invisible, odorless and floats away unnoticed. It's a conservative Pigovian tax, a market mechanism. It's just like the successful so-called sin taxes on tobacco and alcohol which have proven themselves over and over again in countries around the world to be good and effective policy. The EU — the highest import-export bloc in the world — has the most aggressive carbon price, is signaling that it will be much higher, is including all greenhouse gases as of 2026, and is building a carbon border adjustment mechanism which also starts having fiscal teeth in 2026. The United States has prices on methane leakages and high-global warming refrigerants, its richest state, California, has a carbon price on all GHGs, and the country almost introduced a CBAM. China has a carbon market on major emissions sources, one which is growing. Indonesia has carbon pricing. Argentina has carbon pricing. Mexico has carbon pricing. Canada has carbon pricing. Australia has carbon pricing. The UK has carbon pricing. Countries that electrify everything with renewables will outcompete countries that persist with fossil fuels. China is leading on electrification with renewable. Carbon pricing isn't regressive. Rich people emit a lot more GHGs so pay more in carbon prices, but there's no world where that's a burden on them. Impoverished people emit much lower levels of GHGs and pay less carbon pricing. And carbon pricing can easily be made progressive. Canada does it by pricing all GHGs and returning dividends to all Canadians quarterly. Economists tracking this show clearly that the bottom 60% of income earners receive more in dividends than they pay in carbon prices, and they get that money every three months. Voluntary carbon markets don't cut it. Feel-good carbon credits that are unregulated don't cut it. States and post-national entities like the EU have to impose them or they are just ways for the rich to buy indulgences at the expense of the poor, and in 20 years the poor are going to yank those indulgences back. Pricing greenhouse gases into market transactions is one of the most effective ways to get firms and people to stop burning fossil fuels and to electrify everything. It's a conservative fiscal measure. It's remarkable that so many so-called conservatives are opposed to it. #economics #markets #carbontax #carbonprice #climateaction

ReNew has signed five PPAs involving 2.2 GW of renewable energy capacity in India. “We are thrilled to announce the signing of these significant PPAs,” said Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman and CEO, ReNew. “This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to India’s renewable energy goals and strengthens our position as a leading green energy provider. These agreements, with a strong counterparty profile, will not only contribute to a cleaner future but also deliver long-term financial benefits for ReNew and its shareholders.” ReNew signed three solar PPAs totaling 800 MW with NTPC Limited, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), and Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) at a weighted average tariff of INR 2.59 per kWh. ReNew also penned a c.1 GW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) PPA was signed with SJVN LIMITED, at a tariff of INR 4.39 per kWh, in addition to a 438 MW PPA with a large multinational C&I customer. In addition to the PPAs, ReNew has received Letter of Awards for an additional c.5.8 GW of RE capacity. ReNew’s overall portfolio totals 15.6 GW of renewable energy capacity. ReNew’s latest PPAs will see 1.5 GW of solar and 688 MW of wind projects developed and commissioned over the next 24 months. Powering the Periphery: Off-Grid Solar Shines Where the Grid Falls Short The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has significantly boosted the adoption of grid-tied rooftop solar (RTS) systems. So far, nearly 34,982 system integrators have registered across different utilities in India. Additionally, 88 solar module manufacturers, offering over 6,000 approved models, are listed under the approved models and manufacturers. RTS systems using these modules qualify for central government subsidy (CGS). In areas where the grid is unreliable or absent, off-grid solar (OGS) remains the preferred solution. This applies to vast regions across India, including places like Suratkal, famous for its beach and Regional Engineering College, and only 20 kms from Mangalore, Karnataka. Recently, some of my colleagues installed an OGS system for a client there who had renovated her sports shop. A 2 kWp/3 kVA OGS system was installed to power a 2 kW load with 2 hours daily backup. The system generates up to 7 units of electricity per day, with 3 units stored in the flooded lead-acid batteries. Solar modules are mounted on an aluminum structure, angled at 10 degrees south to account for strong winds on the open roof. Ideally, for optimal generation, the angle should match the location's latitude, which is 13 degrees in this case. For this installation, 330Wp polycrystalline solar modules from EMMVEE were chosen. The client's decision to use polycrystalline technology, despite the current market preference for more efficient TOPCon or Mono-PERC options, was influenced by their existing ownership of five polycrystalline modules. The total system cost amounted to Rs. 125/Wp, which is notably higher than the typical cost of Rs. 70-75/Wp for a standard 2 kWp grid-tied RTS. The higher cost of OGS system is primarily attributed to three components: the inverter, battery, and installation. OGS generally incurs higher installation costs compared to grid-tied systems. In this particular case, the installation costs were significantly elevated due to the need for scaffolding and the higher labor costs in Mangalore, which exceed those in Bangalore and other parts of India. Additionally, the price of an OGS is directly influenced by the amount of energy storage capacity included. For the investor, the system offers annual electricity savings of Rs. 15,500, including reduced electricity duty and FPPA (fuel adjustment) surcharge. These savings may increase over time as electricity prices rise, potentially outpacing the gradual decrease in electricity generation due to solar module degradation. The PM Solar Yojana is driving grid tied RTS adoption, with OGS also gaining traction. CGS has been key to grid-tied system popularity, ranging from Rs. 30,000 for 1 kWp to Rs. 78,000 for 3 kWp and above. Extending similar subsidies to OGS could democratize solar access, potentially empowering households and establishments in tier 2 and 3 towns to join India's solar revolution. #MNRE
