Designs for Birch hotel

A collaborative project for Red Deer architects, led by Jan Hendzel studio. The studio was asked to produce 120 Valet stands that challenged uniformity in large batch production. The studio managed a team of talented makers, sustainable materials designer, Charlotte Kidger, ceramicist, Emma Louise Payne and metal-smith, Lucie Najaulis, who brought a hand-made element to each stand. The result was a celebration of colour, texture and detail.

The orb fitted into the Valet stand using a system of octagonal uprights, jointed with through tenons, which formed a 'wing' that slotted into a central base, held down by dowels and hidden bolts.

Jan Hendzel Studio led the design and fabrication of 120 Valet stands, and managed a team of talented makers to contribute a handmade design element to each of them. The final piece of furniture brings together a rich diversity of materials which include, agglomerated carved black cork, textured and glazed ceramics, hand-beaten and patinated copper and grained ash with spalted sycamore.

Valet Orb Stand | Jan Hendzel Studio
These unusual Valet stands are a synthesis of spalted sycamore, recycled plastic, beaten copper and glazed and textured ceramics, and come together to form a multi - functional storage solution for guests at the Birch hotel.

A wonderful combination of through - joinery detailing using Olive Ash timber sourced from the continuous forest covers of National Trust Estates. Recycled PU foam dust and resin composite make up the effervescent layers of the base. Each of the 120 units commissioned by the hotel is unique due to the hand-dyed resin and layered casting process. When fine joinery and plastic come together, the results can be stunning.

The technical challenge for us, when designing each stand, was in bringing each of the unique, characterful elements together in one singular form. They needed to be light yet robust; modular furniture items that could be taken apart and re-assembled easily.

The Capsule Valet stands act as temporary storage in each guest bedroom at Birch hotel. Despite their multi-purpose - they are at once clothes storage, jewellery box and floral display - they were designed to complement a minimal interior design that favours simplicity, sustainability and evokes a sense of play.
