What we would have considered science fiction a decade ago is quickly advancing modern health care, and we haven’t seen anything yet.

Trained physician and medical futurist Dr. Bertalan Mesko, author of The Guide to the Future of Medicine, offers us a fresh look at how innovative technologies enable us to change health care for the long term. He shares advances such as the present reality of surgical robots and tackles questions such as whether nanorobots will ever swim in our bloodstream or whether actual, functioning organs can be made with 3-D printers.

To keep readers grounded in the here and now, Dr. Mesko discusses how he uses technology to monitor and improve his own health. From charting his sleeping patterns to using exercise motivation apps, he gives us detailed examples of how we can use technology to live a healthy and proactive life.

If you want an exciting and practical demonstration of where health care and medicine is heading, then My Health: Upgraded is for you.

If they hit us unprepared, which we are now, they will wash away the medical system we know and leave it a purely technology-based service without personal interaction. Such a complicated system should not be washed away. Rather, it should be consciously and purposefully redesigned piece by piece. If we are unprepared for the future, then we lose this opportunity. I think we are still in time and it is still possible if an easily digestible and practical guide becomes available.

I wrote a book "The Guide to the Future of Medicine: Technology AND The Human Touch" to prepare everyone for the coming waves of change, to be a guide for the future of medicine that anyone can use.

Social media has been clearly changing the way medicine is practiced and healthcare is delivered. Medical professionals must be able to meet the special needs of technology-aware patients and use digital technologies in their work and communications properly. Each physician should find the tools that will assist them in their workflow, and patients need to be educated how to use the internet. It is the responsibility of medical professionals to contribute to this process.

The constantly evolving digital world must be used in the practice of medicine to improve the care of patients. However, the only way to do so effectively is via evidence-based, meaningful and strategic use. Social Media in Clinical Practice provides practical guidance in this mission and is thus essential reading for all medical personal looking into approaching this for the first time.
