• Edo is the old name of current Japan's capital, Tokyo. The era of Tokugawa rule in Japan from 1603 to 1868 is known as the Edo period. In 1868, as the result from the Meiji Restoration, Edo was renamed to Tokyo, and Edo Castle became the Tokyo Imperial Palace.
