“ | We all nestle under the great tree of wisdom, peering out to perceive the world. From the earth, and from the rain, we perceive its wonders until we become a white bird to perch atop a branch... and finally snap off the most important leaf. Once upon a time, I alone dreamed in this world. In my dreams, everybody would also dream after they fell asleep. Wild and wonderful thoughts would emerge from their minds. Some tumbled to the ground, and others floated to the sky, connecting all things in the world into one dazzling net. Amongst the plethora of worlds were numerous smaller worlds. All of fate finding within the tapestry their brilliant glow. I gradually understood that these indescribable and constantly changing things are the most profound things in the world. Only they can completely repel the madness. Only dreams can awaken consciousness from the deepest darkness. I'm the one who posed this question, yet also the one who sought a solution - saving the world with the dreams of the people used to be my answer. And now you've also found your own answer and I shall return all the dreams to the people. Goodbye, people of Sumeru. May you be blessed tonight with the sweetest of dreams. | „ |
~ Rukkhadevata's final words before being erased from existence. |
Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, also known as Arayani, is a posthumous major protagonist of the action roleplaying game Genshin Impact, being one of the three overarching protagonists of the Sumeru Archon Quests (alongside King Deshret and Nabu Malikata) and the overarching protagonist of the Aranyaka World Quest series. She was the original Dendro Archon of Sumeru, and predecessor to Lesser Lord Kusanali.
She passed away 500 years before the events of the game during the Cataclysm, and was the incarnation of Irminsul, a world tree that connects to all parts of Teyvat. Before her death, she created Kusanali of a pure branch of Irminsul, which she is a part of, to continue her mission to remove forbidden knowledge by removing her consciousness from Irminsul.
She is voiced by Mufei in the Chinese version, and Chloe Eves in the English version, the latter being known as a vocalist for DAGames.
Biography[]
Greater Lord Rukkhadevata was once friends with the Goddess of Flowers and King Deshret, until the former's death, and the desertification of Ay-Khanoum by the "first pillar", whom they jointly ruled. Grief-stricken over the death of the Goddess of Flowers, Deshret grew to be obsessed with the past, leading to him and Rukkhadevata splitting ways. She would create a verdant rainforest where she started a new life there.
Rukkhadevata created the Aranara who can control dreams, and they called her "Queen Arayani". She invoked the spirit known as Varuna and constructed the Varuna Contraption at a section of the desert which would be known as Apam Woods and sealed it to protect its true purpose, which is to control the sun and rain. Her followers would establish the Amurta school, and the sages would help her manage affairs. To prevent the further desertification of the forest and to protect it from sandstorms, the Wall of Samiel was erected.
Deshret resorted to utilizing forbidden knowledge from the depths of the Abyss which normal men can't comprehend in an attempt to join the minds between him and people, leading to the fall of his civilization which split into several city-states and the presence of The Withering and Eleazar. Rukkhadevata would gather the people of the Scarlet King's civilizations and instruct them to build Aaru Village as their last bastion. To suppress the forbidden knowledge she sacrificed her original body, reverting into a smaller form. The Scarlet King ultimately sacrificed himself in an attempt to put an end to it.
However, the start of the Cataclysm led to another outbreak of forbidden knowledge spreading uncontrollably throughout the forest and desert, known as the Black Tide. While the rest of the Seven had to face off the hordes of Abyssal monsters in Khaenri'ah, Rukkhadevata stayed behind at Irminsul to defend it from forbidden knowledge, sacrificing her mortal body in the process. She created the Akasha System to connect the wisdom of all her people, which was the Scarlet King's original idea before his downfall, and used all her strength to clear the forbidden knowledge which had went into Irminsul. Unable to cleanse the pollution completely due to her consciousness being the World Tree incarnate, she had no choice but to erase herself from existence as it was still present in Irminsul after her death. As a result, she created Buer, or Lesser Lord Kusanali from a pure branch of Irminsul to continue her mission in stopping the corruption of forbidden knowledge. Due to this, she would highly regard Rukkhadevata as her mentor and would try her best to live up to her.
Rukkhadevata was eventually remembered as Sumeru's great protector, and as such the Akademiya greatly idolized her for the wisdom she represented. Kusanali had objected to the Akademiya's current usage of the Akasha, but did not bother to stop them immediately because she thought that it was Rukkhadevata's wish to see them utilize its full potential. Kusanali highly resembled her predecessor, and thus, everyone was happy at her discovery, changing the date of the Sabzeruz Festival to her birthday. However, the sages believed that her intelligence was no different from a human child, so they locked her within the Sanctuary of Surasthana while brandishing Rukkhadevata's legacy. The story of the Scarlet King and Rukkhadevata was eventually forgotten by the public, and the Aranara were eventually relegated to protecting the Varuna Contraption. Rukkhadevata's corrupted consciousness led to Irminsul becoming polluted with forbidden knowledge, with its effects constantly being covered up by the Akademiya.
Back to the present day, Alhaitham creates a plan to force the Grand Sage to release Kusanali knowing that they needed her to save Irminsul. With the power of the Electro Gnosis taken from the faux god Shouki no Kami after his defeat, Kusanali finds a way towards Greater Lord Rukkhadevata's last memories within Irminsul. Learning that her consciousness and history had to be erased from Irminsul to stop the further outbreaks of forbidden knowledge, Kusanali tearfully does so, curing everyone of Eleazar and stopping the creation of new Withering Zones, removing her consciousness from Irminsul permanently and thus erasing her from the history of Teyvat, ending a legacy of corruption for good. All other descriptions about Rukkhadevata in the game instead attribute her acts to Kusanali, and only the Descenders, who don't come from Teyvat, and thus don't connect to Irminsul, remember the true story.

Trivia[]
- Her demon name is unknown. It could be "Samael" consider she created a wall with the same name, or Buer consider Nahida use to be a part of her.
- Rukkhadevata is shown to be the second god to physically regress into a smaller form after expending their power, the first being Guoba.
- After her erasure from existence in Where the Boat of Consciousness Lies, the majority of in-game texts referring to her are changed to behave if she never existed.
- Rukkhadevata is loosely based on Kallen Kaslana, an another character from miHoYo's Honkai Impact 3rd. Both characters share similarities:
- Both Kallen and Rukkhadevata have long white hair tied in a braid.
- Both characters died 500 years ago prior to the events of the main game.
- Both characters have a smaller and younger reincarnation of themselves. Buer or the Lesser Lord Kusanali is the reincarnation of her created through the purest branches of Irminsul while Theresa Apocalypse is a clone of Kallen created by Otto Apocalypse via her DNA.
- Rukkhadevata's outfit is also similar to Kallen's outfit in the Stigmata "Kallen: Hymn." Moreover, Theresa Apocalypse wore the same outfit in her battlesuit aptly named "Celestial Hymn."
