"I want you to know my real name. It's Chihiro."

Stop hand

I'm not a role model. I was briefly a runway model. I hate the AM! I hate the PM! I hate labels! I'm not a hero, because calling yourself a 'hero' makes you a self-mythologizing narcissistic autocrat.
~ Hobie about himself.
Be your own boss. You don't need all this.
~ Hobie trying to convince Miles that he's better off without the Spider-Society.

Hobart "Hobie" Brown, also known as Spider-Punk, is a major character in Sony Pictures Animation's 24th full length feature film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and will return in its upcoming sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Hobie is a British, punk rock Spider-Man from an alternate universe that is ruled by a totalitarian regime and uses his guitar as his main weapon.

He is voiced by Daniel Kaluuya, who also portrayed Chris Washington in Get Out, OJ Haywood in Nope, and Bing Madsen in Black Mirror.

History[]

Backstory[]

Hobart Brown is a superhero hailing from an alternate universe that is ruled by a totalitarian regime and uses a guitar as his main weapon while he took up the name, “Spider-Punk”. At some point, he was recruited by Spider-Man 2099 to join the Spider Society and formed a friendship with Gwen Stacy, with the two of them going on almost 20 missions together, with one mission being a Prowler Anomaly being caught. Hobart also lets Gwen crash in his dimension, where she keeps a sweater and toothbrush. Hobie is heavily distasteful towards the dictatorship-esque Spider Society, only working for it to help Gwen out, and later disrupt the system.

Across the Spider-Verse[]

He first appears in Mumbattan, India, to assist Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen and Pavitr Prabhakar face the Spot who's after the collider (in order to travel the multiverse).

After saving the city, he came to respect Miles but briefly got disappointed when he wanted to meet the members of the Spider-Society on Earth-928 where he witnesses Miguel O'Hara explain canon events. After an angry breakdown from Miles, the latter escapes from the containment field and is pursued by the spider-people to stop him from changing Spot's attack. Amused by this turn of events, Hobie promptly quits the team and returns to his home dimension.

Near the film's end, he is revealed to have made a side trip to Gwen's world, where he leaves behind a box to her father George. When Gwen comes home, he remarks on how Hobie was odd, but he left her something and she finds it is a dimension hopping watch for her to be with Miles and left a note.

At the end, Hobie was later recruited by Gwen to help her and her other trusted friend find Miles who ended up stranded in Earth-42.

Powers/Skills[]

Hobart seems to possess the same powers that most Spider-People have, with the proportionate strength, speed and agility of a spider, as well as the ability to sense danger on a physical level via a "Spider-Sense". He also has expertise with a guitar, as he’s able to emit a large shockwave attack similar to Miles "venom power".

Hobart is a tech genius, being able to create a successful dimension hopping watch, after studying the properties of the Spider-people's teleportation device. Hobart was seemingly able to create more than one, as he gifted Gwen with one and kept the other.

Equipment[]

  • Multiversal Gizmo
  • Guitar

Personality[]

Hobie an extremely devout anarchist who chafes at all forms of authority, fights facists in his home world, reacts to being told to help people by insisting with unclear levels of seriousness that he's not doing it because he was told to, and states that he's only really cooperating with the Spider-Society out of personal loyalty to his friend Gwen Stacy. This all belies the fact that he does not approve of the Spider-Society's routine commission of allowing their loved ones to die in hopes to preserve the fabric of the multiverse; he clandestinely mentors Miles to prepare him so that he can fight to protect his own loved ones, and swipes bits and pieces of technology from Nueva York right out from under the Society's nose so he can construct his own dimensional watch and fight evil on his own terms.

Quotes[]

Great advice, use your palms, not just your fingers.
~ Hobie giving Miles advice to use his palms when absorbing energy.
I don't follow orders and neither does he!
~ Hobie secretly trying to dissuade Miles from joining the Spider-Society.
I was this cool the whole time.
~ Hobie to Miles after unmasking himself.
Just for the record, I quit.
~ Hobie quitting the Spider Society once they start chasing Miles.
Taking a crap on the establishment. I salute you.
~ Hobie to Mayday Parker

Trivia[]

  • In the comics and likely in this franchise, Hobart Brown is Spider-Man from Earth-138, an alternate reality ruled by a totalitarian regime and uses a guitar as his main weapon.
  • In the mainstream Marvel universe, Hobart Brown is the real name of the supervillain (later anti-hero) Prowler, who, in the Spider-Verse trilogy, is the supervillain identity taken by Miles' uncle, Aaron Davis and by Miles' Earth-42 counterpart. This makes him, alongside Miles, the only two Spider-Men shown in the movie who became the Prowler in an alternate universe.
  • It's often thought that "Spider-Punk" is his codename instead of "Spider-Man" due to being addressed like this in several official sources. However, in the movie, he's never directly addressed as such nor does he seem to go by that nickname, instead being referred as Spider-Man (although subtly). During his introduction, a newspaper from his universe refers to him as Spider-Man, and his back logo has the initials for "Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man" (FNSM) written on it. It's likely that these sources refer to him as "Spider-Punk" to difference him from the rest of the Spider-Men in the movie.
    • It's also worth noting that in the comics, he hated being addressed as "Spider-Punk".
  • It took 3-4 years for the animators to animate Hobie, most likely due to him appearing like a collage of different materials which all have to be designed separately.
  • When Miles' jealousy of Hobie was featured in a news article, it was thought by many that the two were going to be rivals. Ironically, it was proven to be the opposite as Hobie was one of, if not the only, Spider-Man who supported Miles and encouraged him to be better.
  • Since Hobie mentions that he goes to the pub, it most likely means he's somewhere over 18 years old since that's the drinking age in the United Kingdom.
  • It is possible that Hobie is genderqueer as character designer Evan Monteiro stated on twitter "my gut felt a more genderqueer Hobie would be the most radical vision of a black spiderpunk." Although it has not been confirmed.
