Carmen Sandiego is the titular main protagonist of the 2019 Netflix series of the same name. She was trained to become a professional thief at V.I.L.E Academy before realising it's true intentions and defecting to see the world for her own. She is based on her original counterpart.
She was voiced by Hispanic actress Gina Rodriguez, who also voiced Mary in The Star, Velma Dinkley in Scoob!, and Una from Ferdinand.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
She was born to Dexter Wolfe and Carlotta Valdez. When Shadow-san was sent to his house, he desisted from killing him when he saw the baby. He also witnessed Chief killing Dexter out of fear he would take out a gun to shoot at her.
Shadow-san brought the baby to V.I.L.E., where she was raised by the V.I.L.E. councilmen and doted by Coach Brunt. The baby was named "Black Sheep". She was widely trained in geography and other knowledge. Whenever Cookie Booker returned to report with V.I.L.E., Black Sheep always threw water balloons at her. In an occasion, she stole the phone from the Captain.
One day, the phone had a call by a white hat hacker nicknamed Player, a child from Canada. Both became secret friends since then. Motivated by Player, she decided to ask to be accepted into the school, to which most members barring Shadow-san accept.
In classes, she befriended Gray and other students, although Tigress was never fond of her. Black Sheep did well at most classes, but she failed to pass the test by Shadow-san. She suspected that Shadow-san deliberately failed her, but Shadow-san dismissed her complaints as disrespectful.
She infiltrated in a mission where the students that passed the school, had to steal the Eye of Vishnu in Morocco. Upon witnessing how violent the students were when they attempted to harm the head of archaeology site, Black Sheep stopped them from harming the man until she was taken back to Isle of V.I.L.E by the Cleaners.
Becoming Carmen Sandiego[]
With the heads of V.I.L.E keeping a close eye on her after the inflirtrated mission, Black Sheep searched for ways to escape from the Isle of V.I.L.E and see the world for her own. Once Cookie Booker returned to the island, Black Sheep took advantage of this, she stole a V.I.L.E hard drive, delivered by Cookie Booker once a year, along with Booker's red coat and hat to disguise herself, Black Sheep used the boat Booker arrived in to escape from the island.
After escaping, Black Sheep contacted Player again, after re-stealing the phone that was confisicated earlier, and gave herself an official name: Carmen Sandiego, after seeing the nametag on the hat. Mailing the hard drive to Player, Carmen began her mission with her new friend to take down V.I.L.E and stop their heists.
Appearance[]
Carmen is a tall and beautiful, rakuda-skinned young woman with a slender hourglass figure and thick, wavy, hip-length maroon-red hair. She also has black thick brows and blue-gray eyes, and her lips is always seen being covered by red lipstick.
Carmen's signature thief wear dons a red-black color scheme; she wears a large red fedora hat with a black band around it, along with her signature matching-colored trench coat. Her coat is worn under a short-sleeved black stealth-suit (presumably from V.I.L.E.) which sport a triangle-shaped golden zipper hanging from the high-collar. She also wore a pair of low-heeled black shoes, and her accessories includes a set of small, round black earrings, and black gloves which covers her hands.
When out of her thief wear, Carmen usually kept her hair in a messy bun, and while she does wore many casual outfits, her main one consists of a black choker necklace with a pendant that resembles her suit's zipper. She wears a two-toned red jacket with two small black buttons on each side on the front of the attached hood, worn over a black V-neck T-shirt with two red stripes around the short sleeves. She also wore a set of dark navy-gray rolled-up jeans, and red high-top sneakers with white shoelaces, soles and toes.
Abilities[]
- Peak Human Conditioning: Carmen Sandiego, after years of training on the Isle of V.I.L.E and in the academy, has her human attributes heightened to the highest levels beyond the normal human athlete. She has immense strength, speed, an improved stamina and durability that allows her to to overpower V.I.L.E operatives and outrun the authorities without physically exhausting herself. Her agility, flexibility and reflexes are also beyond the normal human attributes, enabling her to perform acrobatic and gymnastic stunts without physically straining her muscles. Her human metobolism may also be heightened up as well. In addition, Carmen is also highly skilled in parkour, enabling her to jump or leap over tall buildings without requiring assistance.
- Master Thief: Having been training at V.I.L.E Academy since a young age, Carmen Sandiego is a master thief; she is able to steal items without any opponents or the authorities noticing, knowing or sensing the act. She is even able to break into safes, high security shelves and picture frames without setting alarms off. Her mastery in thievery makes her a highly professional pickpocketer; able to pickpocket items from her opponents without them noticing or feeling it.
- High-Level Intelligence: Carmen Sandiego is a highly intelligent individual. Having learned various international cultures from the nannies who raised her at a young age during her time on the Isle of V.I.LE, she is able to geographically identify the area she and her team are in, what the people do and the landmarks that every location around the world has. This also makes her a capable leader to her team, having able to lead and guide her members to any of their missions.
- Master Tactician/Strategist: She is a highly professional tactician and strategist; Carmen's strategic planning and mental prowess allows her to adapt to a situation in a fight. She almost constantly was able to triumph in difficult positions or against foes who are numerically superior. Carmen even takes advantage of her opponents' flaws to outsmart them before defeating them. She lured Paper Star to the roof of a train where her paper-based weapons would be futile, due to the force of the wind blowing them backwards and took advantage of Tigress' arrogance over the pickpocketing class and stole the old British Stamp and Tigress' phone without her sensing it.
- Multilingualism: Due to her learning various cultures from a young age, Carmen Sandiego is fluent in her normal English and is able to understand, translate and speak other different languages.
- Stealth Mastery: Carmen is highly professional in stealth; she is able to break and inflitrate musuems, high-tech security rooms and even the Isle of V.I.L.E without getting caught or been seen by either the authorities, ACME or even V.I.L.E. Her stealth mastery is so great, that she is able to disappear after being briefly seen by anyone.
- Master Acrobat: Thanks to her training from V.I.L.E Academy, Carmen Sandiego is a highly skilled acrobat and gymnast. She is able to acrobatically dodge attacks whenever she is in a fight, parkour over buildings or whenever she inflitrates musuems and high-tech security rooms. In addition, she is even able to use her Glider Backpack after acrobatically escaping from any opponent she comes across.
- Master Martial Artist/Combatant: Carmen Sandiego is a highly professional and fearsome martial artist and combatant. Having been trained at V.I.L.E Academy before defecting, she is proficent in various types of martial arts. She is able to pick up a fight with numerous V.I.L.E operatives such as Tigress, Paper Star, Mime Bomb and other opponents she comes across. Carmen is even able to pick up fights when on moving vehicles such as cars and trains, even on the Golden Gate Bridge.
- Master Markswoman: Carmen Sandiego possesses a keen eyesight that makes her a capable markswoman. She was able to use a piece of metal from a train and throws it like a disc that cut the strap holding the manuscripts that Paper Star attempted to steal.
- Indomitable Will: Carmen Sandiego has a strong willpower that makes her fearless, strong-willed and unwilling to give up, even on her friends and the missions she accomplishes. She will stop at nothing to save numerous artefacts that have already been stolen by V.I.L.E and return them to their rightful owners, and to prevent V.I.L.E from getting their hands on them. Carmen also never gave up on defeating and taking down V.I.L.E by helping ACME arrest the members, including the five leaders.
Trivia[]
- Carmen's appearance looks a lot like Peggy Carter from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, except that Carmen dresses in red and has long hair while Carter dresses in blue with a red fedora and has shorter hair.
- It's unknown what Carmen did with the majority of V.I.L.E.'s funds; presumably she has Player keep them in an off record account.
- Carmen is wealthy (but frugal) enough to own a private jet and but also an abandoned warehouse for her home.
- Even though her parents likely gave her a name, she chose to go by "Carmen Sandiego" as her real name.
- Whenever she goes undercover, Carmen chose various names that relate to the color red (either a shade or the color in a different language).
- The finale shows Carmen is still more than a match for Paper Star despite being retired as a thief for two years.
- Carmen stole her signature look from Cookie Booker, who is voiced by the 1990s Carmen actress.
- When it comes to her classmates at V.I.L.E., Carmen gets along with them in this order: Crackle, El Topo, Le Chev, Tigress.
- Unlike her original villainous counterpart, this version of Carmen is portrayed as an honorable heroine.
- When brainwashed into a loyal V.I.L.E. operative, Carmen is willingly homicidal to witnesses and enemies; the only moral restraint her counterpart never lost.
- Likely due to her upbringing, Carmen seems to be pansexual. She's had moments with Graham, and has subtlety flirted with Julia; in the game, Carmen sends Julia a bouquet of roses along with the items V.I.L.E. stole.
