Superhuman strength,[1] also known as Super Strength,[2] was a magical ability in which a creature possessed strength beyond that which would be suggested by their size or muscle mass. For a human wizard or witch, this would be dependent on how one would define strength given the multiple definitions and dimensions of physical strength, such as raw power, muscular endurance etc.[2] For example, Strengthening Solutions[3] and Re'em blood could give temporary superhuman strength to those who did not naturally possess it.[4]
Known creatures with superhuman strength[]
- Trolls had a strength considered "prodigious and unnatural" by Newton Scamander, author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was considered by some to be the only magical ability of trolls,[5] though others also claim they had rudimentary magic.[6]
- Peter Pettigrew's silver hand seemed to possess superhuman strength, as it crushed a small twig into fine dust,[7] and possess a vice grip of a choke hold.[8]
- Giants and half-giants had incredible superhuman strength. This was in part due to their larger-than-average bodies, but they were notably stronger than the norm even for their size; whereas humans suffering from various forms of gigantism are often unable to sustain their large frames without the assistance of canes or walkers, half-giants had absolutely no difficulty to move without assistance. A testimony for their strength was that the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid was able to use his immense strength to break the door to the Hut-on-the-Rock completely off its hinges, and then pick it back up and refit it.[9] In fact, Hagrid was described to have wrestled trolls in the Forbidden Forest when young,[10] further testifying for his incredible strength as trolls were well known for their immense strength.
- Werewolves had superhuman strength in their bestial forms.[2]
- Fang possessed superhuman strength, having strength comparable to the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.[2]
- Viktor Krum possessed similar superhuman strength, likely due to athletic conditioning.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, only characters endowed with abnormal strength, such as Hagrid, Fang, Krum, and Lupin (Werewolf) — are able to pull certain kinds of lever. All other characters must first brew and drink a Strength Potion to do so, though unlocking and activating the Red Brick "Super Strength" will give all characters superhuman strength.
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7, Dudley Dursley and Vernon Dursley both have the Super Strength ability. With them both being Muggles who has had minimal contact with the wizarding world, however, it can be presumed this was merely a normal degree of their great physical strength and not the magical ability, given how Dudley was a skilled boxer and Vernon being a man of burly build.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the first Dementor seen in Little Whinging was able to effortlessly lift Harry Potter off the ground by the neck and pin him to a wall with only one hand, showing great strength, (the average weight of a 15 year old boy being over 120 pounds, though Harry was known to be rather skinny).
