- "Today we will study Jackalopes, a creature that resembles a Jackrabbit with antelope antlers. Personally I feel every creature should have antelope antlers. But since we only have this one, let's cherish it well. I know you are eager to meet a Jackalope, but do try to focus on my lecture first."
- — Silvanus Kettleburn to his sixth-year students[src]
The Jackalope was a North American magical animal that resembled a Jack Rabbit with antlers similar to that of a small antelope.[1][2]
History[]
In the 17th century, its antlers were used as wand cores by Isolt Sayre and James Steward, wandmakers and the founders of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[2]
Ruby Honeysuckle would often wrangle jackalopes on her family farm in her youth in Texas.[4]
During the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Silvanus Kettleburn taught his sixth-years about jackalopes in Care of Magical Creatures class.[1]
In the 21st century, a Jackalope lived in the Clock Tower Courtyard, Hogwarts Castle.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- Real world sightings of Jackalopes are commonly reported. These may be inspired by rabbits with the Shope papilloma virus, which causes horn like tumours on the face and body. Stuffed examples are commonly made by taxidermists in regions where sighting are reported.[6]
- During the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, Year 3, Side Quest "Dumbledore's Christmas Wish", ice-blue jackalopes can be seen. It is unknown if these are supposed to be a subspecies of jackalope, were coloured that way due to magic, or were otherwise a mistake on the part of the developers.
