A Granian was a breed of winged horse. They were grey in colour and were very fast.[1] Granian hair was used as an ingredient in Potion-making.[2] A Granian was one rare possible corporeal form of the Patronus Charm.[3]

History[]

Jules Egwu and her parents rehabilitated a baby Granian with a broken wing.[4]

Decades prior to the Calamity in the late 2010s or early 2020s, Granian hair was used to make several horse-hair wigs worn by sick wizarding children at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. A Calamity Investigator working for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force located these dusty wigs in a St Mungo's basement and used their hair in their potions, finding that the hair was noticeably more potent, resulting in a more powerful Strong Exstimulo Potion. The investigator theorised that this may have been due to the hairs aging in the dark.[2]

The same Calamity Investigator later spent several fruitless hours attempting to procure hair from a Granian before eventually hitting on a combination of the Slowing Charm and the Summoning Charm, enabling them to harvest hair from even the swiftest of the horses. The investigator found that the hair from extremely swift Granians was even more potent, reducing the brewing time for their Exstimulo Potion.[2]

Etymology[]

The Norse hero Sigurd (Siegfried in the Germanic version) had a horse named Grani ('grey') that ran more swiftly than the wind. Grani was the foal of Sleipnir, the steed of Odin, who was in turn the foal of Loki, when he assumed the form of a mare.
