The Calamity[]

  • July: Rubeus Hagrid reports that ever since the Calamity started disappearing creatures, the Forbidden Forest has been thrown out of sorts. He asks to inform all of his friends to return found Foundables to the Forbidden Forest.[2]
  • July–August: A new surge of the Calamity focuses on Harry Potter. He is deluged with owls from friends saying they've been returning lots of Foundables related to him – everything from old socks to a young Harry being kissed by a Dementor.[3]
    • Hermione Granger suggests that the attention of the Calamity is a feature in the Daily Prophet about Harry's work with the Statute of Secrecy Task Force. This confirms her theory, that if enough people focus on something, it can affect how the Calamity behaves.[3]
  • August–September: The Hogwarts Express is whisked away by The Calamity just shortly prior to its scheduled departure on 1 September; Headmistress Minerva McGonagall quickly solicits the assistance of a reputable member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force that Hermione Granger has recommended, who successfully returns the train in time for the new school year.[4]
    • That was not to say that her troubles are over, however, as The Calamity hits the school itself next, spiriting off the Sorting Hat, one of the Thestrals in Hogwarts's herd, one of their carriages, one of their boats, a Winged Boar Statue and even the sign directing people between Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village; all of which the same diligent member is able to retrieve and return to their allotted places, much to the delight of the denizens of Hogwarts Castle. Upon thanking their saviour, the Headmistress informs them that the school has suffered no lasting effects from the recent outburst of the Calamity, not counting the students' new favourite excuse for not finishing their schoolwork in time: "the Calamity stole my homework!"[4]
    • 31 August–1 September: The Calamity has manifested a huge number of never-before-seen dragon Foundables at White River State Park, Indianapolis.
  • October: A new surge of the Calamity focuses on the specific moment in time, when Malfoy Manor served as headquarters for Voldemort. Prior to this moment, the Calamity was not so precise.[5]
  • November: The Calamity focuses on the Ministry of Magic itself. Harry Potter suggests that the Calamity always seems to focus on something specific in particular – a time, a place, or a group of people. He also suggests that if the target of the Calamity can be determined, the Statute of Secrecy Task Force may be able to figure out how to stop it.[6]
  • December: Before the Christmas holidays the Calamity responds with memories from the past Christmases. According to reports, new Foundables are related to the Yule Ball.[7]
