- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages are first published. These are the first official Harry Potter spin-off works by J. K. Rowling and are published for charity.
- 6 January: Actor Julianna Austin, who portrays Polly Chapman in the North American tour production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is born.
- November: The film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is released by Warner Bros., launching the film series. The US release is retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
- Video game adaptations of the film and book are launched thereafter.
- 27 May: Jemima Woolnough, actor, is born.
