On the other hand, before I read it, I was informed this was set in the same universe as A Series of Unfortunate Events and it doesn't really seem to be? I mean they mention the books, All the Wrong Questions and vague past exploits as a child detective so I'm guessing it must take place between those and ASoUE it's just nothing else is mentioned. He talks about his childhood and never mentions VFD even in hints, or even his siblings or friends.
I read the book combing through it for anything related to the lore and I think if I had been told that it's not really set in the same universe it just has a character named Lemony Snicket, I would have enjoyed the book more. Which is a very fresh disappointment but it happens I guess.

It could go a lot of ways considering the two types of worlds that were being pushed together. I've already seen one version in A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman, enjoyed that. But this was very different.
It was also just a lot of fun. I've already got the next book on hold at my library. I finished this one in almost one sitting. It was a fun read and I can't wait to see what happens next in this AU version of Sherlock Holmes crossed over with the Lovecraft mythos.
We had Nyarlathotep show up so now I'm hoping we'll get to see the King in Yellow or his sign at some point. I know he's been mentioned in this book and is called Hastur but I've always found The King in Yellow to be a much creepier name. Hope they run into him!
Anyway, 5 stars because it was fun. That's what I'm here for....more

The story just didn't really hit me. It was a quick read but not very interesting. I guessed that she was going to be blamed for killing her brother but I thought that might be the actual twist, not just the mom being the utter worst.
It had some good ideas skirting around there but I don't think they every really lived up to it. Also the romances were incredibly boring and I did not care. ...more

Until it seemed to remember there was supposed to be a mystery going on and then sped through all that to an unsatisfying ending that got worse when the narrator just flat out continues the whole, idk what happened, shtick.
Like, unreliable narrators where they tell you they're lying, sometimes work for me. There's one book with a narrator like that, that just uplifts the entire story by the way they're telling it and the twists that come from it all. This is not like that one.
Maybe if more of the book had been about trying to solve the mystery it would have been better? But then again I'm not a huge fan of the twist either so I'm not sure. At least it was an easy read. ...more
