I was captivated by the premise right away and started reading this book. As I turn pages, like Addie's everyday life the story grew repetitive too. But I still loved this book because of its lyrical prose, enchanting remark, and let's admit it: the story is build on magical realism!

It’s just that we belonged to a minority community. I was only a few days old and I was very handful. All I did back then was crying and screaming. You can imagine how unreasonable an infant could be. My mom was always anxious that I shouldn't be heard. Not by the military people. My family and other villagers from my community were so afraid that I was jeopardizing their safety!
Little back story 2: I was in third grade. I was living with my cousins. Back then, we were living in a half brick wall house. I can distinctly remember the times when we were forced to escape house because there has been a collision between the majority and minority groups. I remember being woken up at 2 am and putting on clothes half-asleep and dragged away to our neighbors' houses (made of bricks) in the inner part of the locality.
Little back story 3: It happened in 2018. I don't have a heart to unfold it infront the world. Not yet. Maybe some other day.
Between the World and Me brings back so many memories of fear! Although I had these dreadful memories growing up, I eventually won my fear. I read tons of books illustrating the importance of diversity. I went to a school where the majority of the students and teachers were from different races and they truly were very nice. They never treated me differently because I belonged to a different tribe group. When I moved to the capital city, far away from my hometown, my grandmother was really worried. She was afraid about my safety and security as a minor girl. She was anxious that it would be hard on me. However, my friends and teachers were once again nice to me. Nonetheless, I couldn’t blame my grandmother for wanting to pass her irrational fear onto me. After all, she lived in fear all her life!
In this book, Ta-Nehisi Coates details the racial violence and discrimination that the African-American people face every day. Here, he presents a brutally honest illumination of the fear that the black people live in. Without sugarcoating, he explains to his son how vulnerable their body was just because of the color of their skin even in today's World. It is an intensely personal book that's rooted in deeply-felt lived experience. And I felt every bit of it. Every reader should!
The world has just witnessed a white privileged police officer chocking George Floyd, a black man, to death without feeling any sense of guilt. Needles to say, this book is timely and immensely important. Although Coates doesn't offer much hope in his narration, we must not give up on hope and we must break the cycle of racism that runs in the generation. To do so, we can read, think, and learn. Because this is how and this is where racisms should run out. Because Black Lives Matter!

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie won my heart through her captivating and brilliant write up back in January'20 when I read her first book We Should All Be Feminists. There she precisely points out why feminism is important and how HUMANISM and FEMINISM should be entirely different issues.
Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions is another hard-hitting, thought-provoking, and eye-opening book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which is written as a form of a letter to her friend Ijeawele on how to raise her newborn daughter Chizalum. This book is a perfect blend of PARENTING and FEMINISM. Like Shimin, who kindly gave me this book, I practically highlighted the entire book. Here, I am gonna share some very important excerpts to lure you into reading this book!
√ In these coming weeks of early motherhood, be kind to yourself. Ask for help. Expect to be helped. There is no such thing as a Superwoman. Parenting is about practice – and love.
√ And please reject the language of help. Chudi is not “helping” you by caring for his child. He is doing what he should. When we say fathers are “helping,” we are suggesting that child care is a mother’s territory, into which fathers valiantly venture. It is not.
√ I looked at the toy section, which was also arranged by gender. Toys for boys are mostly active, and involve some sort of doing – trains, cars – and toys for girls are mostly passive and are overwhelmingly dolls. I was struck by this. I had not quite realized how early society starts to invent ideas of what a boy should be and what a girl should be. I wished the toys had been arranged by type, rather than by gender.
√ Teach her to question language. Language is the repository of our prejudices, our beliefs, our assumptions. But to teach her that, you will have to question your own language. A friend of mine says she will never call her daughter ‘princess’. People mean well when they say this, but ‘princess’ is loaded with assumptions, of a girl’s delicacy, of the prince who will come to save her, etc. This friend prefers ‘angel’ and ‘star’.
√ So instead of teaching Chizalum to be likeable, teach her to be honest. And kind. And brave. Encourage her to speak her mind, to say what she really thinks, to speak truthfully. And then praise her when she does. Praise her especially when she takes a stand that is difficult or unpopular because it happens to be her honest position. Tell her that kindness matters. Praise her when she is kind to other people. But teach her that her kindness must never be taken for granted. Tell her that she too deserves the kindness of others. Teach her to stand up for what is hers. If another child takes her toy without her permission, ask her to take it back, because her consent is important. Tell her that if anything ever makes her uncomfortable, to speak up, to say it, to shout.
√ Show her that she does not need to be liked by everyone. Tell her that if someone does not like her, there will be someone else who will. Teach her that she is not merely an object to be liked or disliked, she is also a subject who can like or dislike. In her teenage years, if she comes home crying about some boys who don’t like her, let her know she can choose not to like those boys.
√ Teach her about privilege and inequality and the importance of giving dignity to everyone who does not mean her harm – teach her that the household help is human just like her, teach her always to greet the driver.
√ Teach her never to universalize her own standards or experiences. Teach her that her standards are for her alone, and not for other people. This is the only necessary form of humility: the realization that difference is normal. Tell her that some people are gay, and some are not. A little child has two daddies or two mummies because some people just do. Tell her that some people go to mosque and others go to church and others go to different places of worship and still others don’t worship at all, because that is just the way it is for some people.
And most importantly, make her believe:

স্মৃতিকথার পুরোটা সময় উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরী-র রাশভারি ব্যক্তিত্ব অথচ প্রচন্ড বিনয় মুগ্ধতায় আচ্ছন্ন করে রাখে। খেয়ালি এই মানুষটি সারাক্ষণ আপনমনে ছবি আঁকছেন নতুবা বেহালায় সুর তুলছেন। ছেলেমেয়েদেরকেও আদর স্নেহে সঠিক শিক্ষা দিতে ভুলছেন না। নিমন্ত্রণ বাড়িতে গরীব ভদ্রলোকদের কেবল ঠান্ড��� লুচি দিয়ে আপ্যায়ন করছিল বলে উপেন্দ্রবাবুকে গরম লুচি দিতে চাইলে তিনি প্রচন্ড বিনীতভাবে উত্তর দিচ্ছেন- "কিন্তু আমার পাতের ঠান্ডা লুচি তো ফুরোয়নি?"
বিধুমুখী দেবী তখনকার যুগেও দিব্যি চমৎকার প্যারেন্টিং বিদ্যা রপ্ত করেছিলেন। তাইতো মেয়ে পূণ্যলতা দেবী হাতের সাপমুখো বালা ভেঙে সামনে এসে দাঁড়ালে একটুও না বকে হেসে বলছেন, "তোমাকে দেখছি এবার লোহার বালা গড়িয়ে দিতে হবে!" নিজের ছেলেমেয়েদের সমান আদরে রোগ সারাচ্ছেন মালীর ছেলের। আর শিখিয়ে দিচ্ছেন জীবনের অদ্ভুত সুন্দর মন্ত্র, "দিয়ো কিঞ্চিৎ, না করো বঞ্চিত!"
সুকুমার রায় ছিলেন ননসেন্স রাইমসের মতোই মজাদার একজন মানুষ। ছোটবোন টুনী মাটিতে পা ছড়িয়ে বসে ছিল বলে তাকেও পেন্সিল খাতার সাথে তুলে নিয়ে ডেস্কবন্দী করে মুচকি হেসে বলছেন, "মাস্টারমশাইর অর্ডার - যা কিছু মাটিতে পড়ে থাকবে তাই ডেস্কে ভরতে হবে!" আবার পূণ্যলতার গাছে আর সব ভাইবোনের মতো নীল ফুল ফুটেনি বলে সাদা ফুলকে রং তুলি দিয়ে রঙ্গীন করে দিচ্ছেন! কারও উপর বিদ্বেষ কিংবা হিংস্র ভাব থাকলে তা দূর করার জন্য বানিয়ে বানিয়ে মজার গল্প বানানোর একটা খেলা বের করেছিলেন তিনি। খেলার নাম দিয়েছিলেন "রাগ বানানো"!
পূণ্যলতার জন্ম বেড়ে উঠা কলকাতা শহরেই- তেলের বাতি আর টানা পাখার যুগে। তবে বছরান্তে বাড়ির সবাই মিলে দার্জিলিং, পুরী, মধুপুর, চুণার, পচম্ভা ঘুরে ঘুরে সবুজ বনে, রেললাইনের বাঁকে আর সমুদ্রের আদরে ঝুড়িভর্তি স্মৃতি কুড়িয়েছে। বাড়ি ভর্তি সর্বদা মানুষ থাকতো বলে উৎসবমুখর সময় কাটতো প্রতিদিন। রবিবাবু, জগদীশচন্দ্র বসু, আচার্য প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র -এই মজার এবং গুণী মানুষগুলোর সংস্পর্শে আসার সুযোগ হয়েছিল সেই ছোটবেলা থেকেই।
পুরো বইটি লিখেছেন নিত্য কথোপকথনের ঢংয়ে, একেবারে সহজ সুন্দর ভাষায়। একরাশ মায়া আর একগাদা শৈশব বারবার যেন স্পষ্ট চোখের সামনে ভেসে উঠছিল! অদ্ভুত সুন্দর একটা বই!

This book is WHOLESOME! It’s laugh-out-loud funny and heart-wrenchingly sad in equal measures.
This is a first-hand account of life as a junior doctor at NHS, UK, in all its joy, pain, sacrifice and maddening bureaucracy. I started reading this book thinking maybe practising medicine isn’t undervalued and underpaid in the UK only to find out the scenario is almost the same as Bangladesh. Not only do some British people threaten you to break your leg but also throw a bin at you containing virulent needles from which you might catch several HIV strains. Kay also exposes the bitter truths that are wrong with NHS.
The author, Adam Kay, is a former obstetrician-gynaecologist at NHS and here he shares stories that are funny and hilarious, sad and devastating. He also shares experience; the immense stress he has been through, the devastating loss of patients and the destruction of his personal relationships due to the long hours shifts. As a junior physician of Bangladesh, I can certify we all have been there, We are living this life. And yet, there’s no better job in the world! The smile of an innocent baby who now can breathe without an oxygen mask, when a mother showers you with her blessing for her child is alive because of your hard work, a scribble art piece that you get from a little girl who has been discharged after weeks of hospital-stay when an old man brings fruits from his garden so that you can eat healthily; everything makes it worthwhile!
It breaks my heart when I find out that Adam Kay left NHS because of a devastating experience in a ward when it wasn’t even his fault and none could have been done anything differently.
I urge anyone and everyone to read this book. Even a non-medical person will get it through and through because Kay explained all the technical terms using footnotes.

Ijeoma Umebinyuo opens her unhealing heart through these short poems that speak volumes about the raw truths of being a woman. They are about cultural exploitation, alienation in a foreign country, anger, love, violence, abuse, emotions, tragedy, and courage. Each poem punches in the gut. They are full of pain and passion. They speak to the souls.
You call me “sister” not because you are my blood but because you understand the kind of tragedies we both have endured to come back into loving ourselves again & again.

যে কবির নাম কিছুদিন আগেও না-জানা, না-শোনা ছিল, উথাল-পাথাল মন কেমন করা দিনে যার লেখা দু'লাইন কবিতা কখনো গুঞ্জরিত হয়নি, যে লেখকের কাজ কখনো চিরায়ত কথাসযে কবির নাম কিছুদিন আগেও না-জানা, না-শোনা ছিল, উথাল-পাথাল মন কেমন করা দিনে যার লেখা দু'লাইন কবিতা কখনো গুঞ্জরিত হয়নি, যে লেখকের কাজ কখনো চিরায়ত কথাসাহিত্যের ছায়ায় স্থান পায়নি, বাংলার বিখ্যাত রায় পরিবার কিংবা ঠাকুর পরিবারেও যার জন্ম আর বেড়ে উঠা নয়, যে শত শরদ মানুষের হৃদয় স্পর্শ করা আদর্শ কোনো ব্যক্তি নয় - এমন একজন ভীষণ সাদামাটা মানুষের আটপৌরে নিস্তরঙ্গ জীবনগাঁথা অত তারিয়ে তারিয়ে পড়ব কোনোদিন ভাবিনি, ভাবতে পারিনি।
থোকা থোকা কালচে রঙের ঠসঠসে মালবেরি ফল কীভাবে অক্ষয় হয় তা ভাবতে ভাবতে, প্রতিদিন একটা-দুটো শব্দ নাড়িয়ে চারিয়ে দেখতে দেখতে গোটা মাস দুই লাগিয়ে পড়ে ফেললাম অক্ষয় মালবেরি, মণীন্দ্র গুপ্ত -এর অখণ্ড আত্মজীবনী। কিংবা বলা যায় মনের মধ্যে গেঁথে নিলাম একটু একটু করে। কী অদ্ভুত সুন্দর গদ্য! খানিকটা ঘোর লাগা ধাঁধার মতো সাধারণত কিছু দৃশ্য আর সময়ের অসাধারণ বর্ণনা। পড়তে পড়তে ঝিমঝিমে নেশা ধরে যায়। গলার মধ্যে কেমন একটা চাপা অনুভূতি আটকে থাকে। মনটা অকারণ বিষন্নতায় হুহু করে উঠে।
"আমি তখন থেকেই নিজেকে চিনি। আমার মতো মানুষকে দিয়ে কোনো কীর্তি সম্ভবপর নয়। যতটুকু না হলে নয় ততটুকু, যতটুকু না হলে নয় ততটুকু - এইভাবে খুদে খুদে হাতে একটু একটু নিয়ে, একটু একটু দিয়ে, পৃথিবীকে বিরক্ত না করে এতদিন কাটল। ছবি আঁকার সময় মিনিয়েচারের থেকে একটু বড় আঁকি। লিখবার সময় ছোট ছোট বই লিখি - একটি একটি শব্দ ভেবে সময় কাটাই। বেশ লাগে। পৃথিবীর আলোবাতাসের সঙ্গে শব্দগুলি কেমন দোয়েলের মতো, চড়ুয়ের মতো, কাঁচপোকার মতো মেশে, দেখি। বেশ লাগে।
আমি কি পাহাড়ের বাঁকে অজন্তা এলোরা বানাতে পারতাম? অসম্ভব। আমি উদয়গিরির চেয়েও অনেক ছোট একটি গুহা বানিয়ে ছেড়ে দিতাম। সেখানে বসে মেঘে- বর্ষায় বৃষ্টির রেখা, শীতে অস্তমান সূর্যের রেখা দেখতাম।"
অদ্ভুত সুন্দর সুর্যরিয়াল বাস্তবতার কথা পড়তে পড়তে নিজেকে আরও ক্ষুদ্র আর তুচ্ছ মনে হয়। আমিও বেশ বুঝতে পারি- "আমার হবে না, আমি সত্যি মূর্খ, আকাঠ!"
পরমুহুর্তেই রূপকথা রাজ্য সম্মুখে ভেসে উঠে -
"প্রত্যেক ফুলের পাপড়ির কেন্দ্রে একটা সূক্ষ্ম ফুটো আছে, সেই ফুটো গিয়ে শেষ হয়েছে বোঁটার প্রান্তে। ঐ পথটুকু জাদুপথ। কেউ যদি সূক্ষ্ম হয়ে ছূঁচের মতো ঐ পথের এক মুখ দিয়ে ঢুকে অন্য মুখ দিয়ে বেরিয়ে যেতে পারে তবে সে পৌঁছবে এক অন্য রাজ্যে। এক এক ফুলের পথের শেষে এক এক রাজ্য। শিউলিফুলের ফুটো দিয়ে বেরুলে পাওয়া যাবে সাদা মেঘের দেশ। লাল সন্ধ্যামণির ফুটোর ওপারে আছে খুব সুন্দরী, আবছায়ায় চলাফেরা করা মেয়েদের দেশ। জ্যোৎস্না ফোটা হাসনুহানা ফুলের সূক্ষ্ম পথটুকু পেরুলেই ঝাড়লন্ঠব নিবে আসা এক চাঁদিনী জলসার দেশ। আর গ্রীষ্মের তাপে শুকিয়ে মুচমুচে হয়ে যাওয়া স্বর্ণচাঁপার ফুটো দিয়ে বেরুলেই মুনশিবাড়ি।"
কমলা বিকেল পেরিয়ে সন্ধ্যা নামলেই আমার আয়তাকার বেলকনি হাসনাহেনার মাতাল ঘ্রাণে ভরে থাকে। অথচ এভাবে তো কোনোদিন ভাবিনি! এমনি চিত্তাকর্ষক বর্ণনায় মণীন্দ্র গুপ্তের মাতৃহীন শিশুকাল, শিশুবেলার গন্ধমাখা সবুজ গ্রাম, স্নেহকাতর বালকের পাঠ্যবইয়ের ভাঁজে লুকানো অপাঠ্যবইয়ের প্রতি ভালোবাসা, দায়সারাভাবে শেষ করে ফেলা স্কুলজীবন, ঝোঁকের মাথায় সেনাজীবন অর্জন-বর্জন, অতঃপর বেকারত্ব বরণ - সবকিছু ছবির মতো উঠে এসেছে। অক্ষর ছুঁয়ে দিলেই ফেলে আসা অতীতকে অনুভব করতে পারছি। পরক্ষণেই গভীর বিষাদে ডুবে যাচ্ছি, তলিয়ে যাচ্ছি!

অ্যান শার্লি অসম্ভব কল্পনাপ্রবণ আর ভীষণ রোমান্টিক একটি মেয়ে। সাধারণ অর্থে রোমান্টিকতা বলতে শুধুমাত্র প্রেমের ব্যাপারটা বোঝায়। লাল চুলের মেয়ে অ্যান শার্লির দৃষ্টিতে রোমান্টিকতার ডেফিনিশন অন্যরকম সুন্দর। অ্যান আমার এই লেখা পড়তে গেলে বলতো, "কিন্তু সুন্দর শব্দটা দিয়েও রোমান্টিকতা ব্যাপারটা পুরোপুরিভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করা হলোনা!"
লালচুলো প্রিন্সেস মেরিডা আমার সবচাইতে প্রিয় ডিজনি প্রিন্সেস। আর গাজর রঙা চুলের সাহসী মেয়ে পিপি লংস্টকিংও অসম্ভব পছন্দের গল্পবন্ধু। তাই লাল চুল নিয়েও যে হীনমন্যতায় ভোগা যায় ব্যাপারটা কোনোদিন মাথায় আসেনি। অ্যানকে নিজের লাল চুল আর চেহারা নিয়ে সবসময় আফসোস করতে দেখে কিছুটা বিরক্তি বোধ করতে গিয়েও তার চমৎকার সারল্যে বিরক্তির রেশ কেটে যায়। পজিটিভ দিকের মধ্যে আরও আছে তার অতি কৌতুহলী মন। ওল্ড স্কুল সোল বলতে যেটা বোঝায় অ্যান ঠিক সেটাই। অথচ ভীষণ সাহসী আর গন্ডির বাইরে গিয়ে ভাবতে দ্বিধা করেনা। কল্পনার জগতে বারবার হারাতে গিয়ে সে প্রচুর ভুল করে এবং ভুল থেকে শিক্ষা নিতেও ভোলেনা। সর্বোপরি অ্যানের মাঝে পারফেকশনের ছিটেফোঁটাও নেই, বরং ইমপারফেকশনই তার আসল সৌন্দর্য।
একটানা বকবক করতে থাকা অ্যান শুরুতেই ম্যাথিউর মন জয় করে নেয়। পরবর্তীতে ম্যারিলার হৃদয়ও অ্যানের প্রতি আদ্র হলে গ্রীন গ্যাবল নামক বাড়িতে তার ঠাঁই মেলে। আর খুব সাদামাঠাভাবে গল্প এগুতে থাকে। গল্পের প্লট অতি সাধারণ হলেও L.M. Montgomery'র মনছোঁয়া লেখনীর জাদুতে Anne Of Green Gables গল্পটি অন্য মাত্রা লাভ করে। ঠাঁই মেলে ক্লাসিক জনরায়।
কোনো বই পড়ে ভীষণ ভালা লাগার পর যদি জানা যায় এটি সিরিজের প্রথম বই তাহলে একজন পড়ুয়ার মনে যে আনন্দের সৃষ্টি হয় তার কোনো তুলনা নেই। Anne Of Green Gables সিরিজের প্রথম বই। অ্যানকে নিয়ে লেখা আরও আটটি বই আছে। সবগুলো বই পড়ে ফেলার লোভ সামলাতে পারছিনা!...more

Wonder আমার এ বছরে পড়া সেরা বইগুলোর একটি। অসম্ভব সুন্দর একটি বই। তারচাইতেও সুন্দর বইয়ের মেসেজটা!
"অগাস্ট পুলম্যান" নামের ছোট্ট একটি ছেলেকে ঘিরে গল্পের প্লট এগিয়েছে। মা-বাবা আদর করে ডাকে অগি। অগির "Mandibulofacial dysostosis" নামক একটা ক্রোমোজোমাল ডিজিস আছে। এই ডিজিসের আরেক নাম Treacher Collins syndrome। কিছুদিন আগেই এই সিনড্রোমের একটা বাচ্চাকে খুব কাছে থেকে দেখেছিলাম। দেখে এতো মায়া হচ্ছিলো! ছোট্ট একটা শিশু কি এমন অপরাধ করেছে যার জন্য তাকে এই শাস্তি পেতে হচ্ছে?? এই সিনড্রোমের বাচ্চাদের Facial Asymmetry থাকে, কিন্তু ব্রেইনের ডেভেলপমেন্ট ঠিকভাবেই হয়। তাই তারা সবকিছু বুঝতে পারে। তাদের দিকে কেউ অ্যাবনরমাল দৃষ্টিতে তাকালে তারা কষ্ট পায়। লেখক R. J. Palacio তাদের অনুভূতি, এবং তাদের ঘিরে থাকা মানুষগুলোর অনুভূতি খুব বাস্তবভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন এই গল্পে।
অগি নিজেকে খুব সাদাসিধে একজন ভাবতে ভালবাসে। তার দিকে সবাই অন্য দৃষ্টিতে তাকায় এবং তাকে দেখে সবাই খুব ভয় পায় এই ব্যাপারটা তার শিশুমন কিছুতেই মেনে নিতে পারেনা। তাই সে সবসময় একটা এস্ট্রোন্যাট হ্যালমেট পড়ে থাকে যেন কেউ তার চেহারা দেখার সুযোগ না পায়।

আমরা অনেক সময় চেহারা দেখেই একজন মানু্ষ সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু অনুমান করে ফেলি। অথচ চেহারার আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকা মানুষটি সম্পর্কে একটুখানি জানার সুযোগ পেলে দেখা যায় আপাতদর্শনে যাকে কুৎসিত(!) মনে হয়েছিল তার ভেতরেও খুব চমৎকার একজন ভাল মানুষ লুকিয়ে আছে!
ফিফথ গ্রেডের আগ পর্যন্ত অগিকে স্কুলে যেতে হয়নি। পরে অগির বাবা মা সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় অগিকে স্কুলে যেতে হবে। বরাবরের মতো প্রথমে ওকে দেখে স্কুলের সবাই নাক সিটকায়। পরবর্তীতে ওর সাথে যারা মিশে তারা জানতে পারে অগি খুব চমৎকার একটি ছেলে। স্মার্ট এবং ফানি। বন্ধু হিসেবেও অসাধারণ! সবচেয়ে চমৎকার ব্যাপার হলো সবাই অগির সাথে অত্যন্ত নীচ আচরণ করলেও সে মনেমনে কষ্ট পেতো ঠিকই, কিন্তু কারো বিরুদ্ধে নালিশ করতো না! ধীরে ধীরে সবার সাথেই ওর বন্ধুত্ব হয়। সব্বার সাথে! আর সবাই ওকে ভালবেসে ফেলে!
মি. ব্রাউনের দেয়া হোমওয়ার্ক প্রিসেপ্টে সে লিখেছিল, Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcometh the world!
সত্যিসত্যি সে একবার স্ট্যান্ডিং ওভেশন পায়! বছর শেষে হেনরী বীচার স্কুল একজন স্টুডেন্টকে বেস্ট স্টুডেন্ট এওয়ার্ড দেয়। এই এওয়ার্ড একাডেমিক সাকসেসের উপর ভিত্তিতে দেয়া হয়না। সহৃদয়তা, অটুট মনোবল, মাহাত্ম্য, সাহসিকতা এসব গ্রেট ভার্চুর উপর ভিত্তি করে এই সম্মাননা দেয়া হয়। মি. ট্যুশম্যান যখন অগাস্ট পুলম্যানের নাম উচ্চারণ করে তখন আমি রীতিমতো জোরে জোরে হাসছিলাম! আর চোখে পানি!

"পাহাড়ের ঢালের ওপর বাড়ি। গেট দিয়ে ঢুকে কাঁকড় বিছানো পথ দিয়ে নেমে বারান্দায় পৌঁছতে হত। একহারা লম্বা বাংলো, সামনে টানা বারান্দা, তার কাঠের রেলি

কী ভীষণ মায়ামাখা লেখনী! লীলা মজুমদারের শৈশব কেটেছে 'হাই উইন্ডস' নামের এই স্বপ্নের বাড়িতে, শিলং শহরে। খুব ছোটকাল থেকেই বানিয়ে বানিয়ে গল্প বলে ভাইবোনদের বশ করে ফেলতেন। সেই ছিল শুরু। মনে মনে ঠিক করে নিয়েছিলেন, লিখলে ছোটদের জন্যই লিখবেন, ছোটদের জন্যই বাঁচবেন।
লীলা মজুমদারের জন্ম বিখ্যাত রায় পরিবারে। সেইসূত্রে লীলা হলেন সুকুমার রায়ের খুড়তুতো বোন এবং সত্যজিৎ রায়ের পিসি। সন্দেশ পত্রিকার জনক উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরী হতেন জ্যাঠামশাই। জ্যাঠ্যামশাই ছিলেন লীলার কাছে সুন্দর একটা ছবির মতো। এই বই দেখছেন, এই বেহালা বাজাচ্ছেন, এই ঈজেলের সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে ছবি আঁকছেন। ছবির মতো এই মানুষটিই ছোটবেলায় লীলার মন গড়ে দিয়েছেন। তবে হৃদয়ে গুরুর স্থান দিয়ে রেখেছেন বড়দা-কে। কোঁকড়া চুল, শীর্ণ গাল, তার উপর কোথায় একটা বড় আঁচিল - দেখে দেখে চিরকালের মতো সে দৃশ্য মনে আঁকা হয়ে গিয়েছিল। আবোলতাবোলের একটা ছবিতে তুলি লাগাতে লাগাতে বড়দা সুকুমার একদিন বলেছিলেন, "তুই-ও এসব করবি, কেমন?" সেই বড়দা সুকুমারের নির্দেশে একখানা ছোট গল্প লিখে দিলেন সন্দেশ পত্রিকার জন্য, ছাপাও হল। নিজে নাম দিয়েছিলেন ‘লক্ষ্মীছাড়া’, বড়দা বদলে রাখলেন ‘লক্ষ্মী ছেলে'। এরপর আর পিছনে ফিরে তাকাতে হয়নি লীলাকে। ছোটদের জন্য লিখে গেছেন জাদুকরী সব গল্প। কী ভীষণ পেলব আর মায়ায় ভরপুর একেকটা গল্প! অথচ যার কলম এতো কোমল তাঁর ভেতরকার ভিতটা ছিল অসম্ভব পোক্ত আর অনড়। তখনকার নাম করা ডাক্তার সুধীন কুমার মজুমদারকে বিয়ে করে লীলা রায় হলেন লীলা মজুমদার। পাত্র হিন্দু হওয়াতে বেঁকে বসেছিলেন গোঁড়া ব্রাক্ষ্ম বাবা, প্রমদারঞ্জন। এভাবেই লীলার সাথে বাবার যোগাযোগ ছিন্ন হয় চিরকালের মতো।
ছাত্রী হিসেবে লীলা ছিলেন তুখোড় মেধাবী। ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে তাঁর দখল ছিল ঈর্ষনীয়। বিএ এমএ উভয় পরীক্ষাতে প্রথম বিভাগে পাশ করেছেন। তাঁর বর্ণাঢ্য কর্মজীবন কেটেছে দার্জিলিঙ, শান্তিনিকেতন এবং কলকাতায় অধ্যাপনা করে। রবিবাবুর টানেই বারবার ছুটে গেছেন শান্তিনিকেতনে। বেতার প্রযোজক হিসেবে আকাশবাণীতেও ছিলেন বছর সাতেক। সেখানে কাজ করতে গিয়ে আজীবনের স্নেহের সম্পর্ক গড়ে উঠেছিল অনেকের সাথে। সব ছেড়ে-ছুড়ে সাহিত্যচর্চায়-ও রত ছিলেন অনেকদিন। সন্দেশ পত্রিকার সম্পাদনাও করেছেন। তাঁর উদ্যোগেই সিগনেট প্রেস থেকে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল 'সেরা সন্দেশ'। নিজে রচনা করেছেন অসংখ্য ছোটগল্প। ক্লাসিক সাহিত্য অনুবাদে-ও পিছিয়ে ছিলেন না।
পাকদণ্ডী অর্থ যে পথ ঘুরে ঘুরে পাহাড়ের উপর দিয়ে গেছে। আক্ষরিক অর্থেই নানা চরাই উৎরাই পেরুনো বিস্তৃত কলেবর আর সময়ের নানা বিবর্তনে লীলার বর্ণাঢ্য জীবনছবিকে এক শব্দে পাকদণ্ডী নামে আখ্যায়িত করা যায়। ভীষণ সুখপাঠ্য একটা বই!...more
বই পড়া শেষ করার অনেকক্ষণ পরেও গল্পের ঘোর থেকে বের হতে না মুহূর্তগুলো আমার সবচাইতে পছন্দের। ব্যাপারটা যে হরহামেশা ঘটে এমনও না। আজ অনেকদিন পর সুরলোকের গবই পড়া শেষ করার অনেকক্ষণ পরেও গল্পের ঘোর থেকে বের হতে না মুহূর্তগুলো আমার সবচাইতে পছন্দের। ব্যাপারটা যে হরহামেশা ঘটে এমনও না। আজ অনেকদিন পর সুরলোকের গল্প পড়তে গিয়ে নিজেই শব্দলোকে বাধা পড়েছি।
ফেসবুকের কোনো এক ��ুকস্টাগ্রামিং গ্রুপে পোস্ট করা চমৎকার একটা ছবি দেখে বইটার কথা প্রথম জানতে পারি। তখনই ঠিক করে ফেলি গান্ধর্বী পড়ে ফেলতে হবে। পড়তে গিয়ে এতোটা মোহাচ্ছন্ন হয়ে পড়ব এমনটা কল্পনাও করিনি।
সাহিত্য ঘরানার একটা পরিবার ঠিক কেমন হয় কিংবা সত্যিকারে গান পাগল মানুষগুলো আসলেই অপার্থিব জগতের কেউ কিনা জানার আগ্রহটা সবসময় মনের কুঠরিতে গুপ্ত ছিল। বলতে দ্বিধা নেই, বেড়ে উঠার সময় এমন একটা পারিবারিক আবহ না পাওয়ার জন্য চোরা একটা দুঃখও লালন করেছি অনেক দিন।
ঈশ্বর প্রদত্ত ক্ষমতা নিয়ে মর্ত্যের মাটিতে এসেও অপালা দত্তগপ্তের মতো সুরকন্যারা শুধুমাত্র মেয়ে হবার অপরাধে ঘরকন্না সামালাতে গিয়ে আস্তে আস্তে ঝরে যায়। যে কন্ঠের সুর কণের বিয়ের যোগ্যতা হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয় এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত ইচ্ছের বিরুদ্ধে অসম্ভব সম্ভাবনাময় একজন "মেয়ে শিল্পী" কে বিয়ের পিড়ি বসতে হয়, বিয়ের পরে সংসারের হেসেল ঠেলতে গিয়ে সেই কন্ঠের পরিচর্যা করার সুযোগ আর ঘটেনা। অথচ গানই ছিল অপালার একমাত্র সাধনা আর ভালবাসা। অসম্ভব পবিত্র তার মন। তারচাইতেও পবিত্র সোহমের সাথে তার সম্পর্ক। অপালার ভাষ্যমতে সোহম তার গুরুভাই। প্রদ্যোতের সাথে তার যেমন রক্তের সম্পর্ক তেমনি সোহমের সাথে সম্পর্ক মরমের, শিক্ষা দীক্ষা আর রুচির। সোহম-অপালা যুগলের শিল্প জগৎকে অনেক কিছুই দেবার ছিল। অথচ মর্ত্যলোকের নিচু আর কুঠিল মানু্ষের দেয়া আঘাতে অভিমানী অপালার কন্ঠ রোধ হয়ে যায় চিরতরে।
মিতশ্রীর মত প্রখর ব্যক্তিত্বসম্পন্ন আর স্বাধীনচেতা হবার সুযোগ ঘটে কতজনের?! কঠোর পরিশ্রম মাঝেমাঝে প্রতিভাকেও হার মানাতে পারে সেটার উদাহরণ মিতুল। কর্কশ একটা কন্ঠকে সাধনার জোড়ে শ্রুতিমধুর করে তুলার দৃষ্টান্ত হাজারে হাজারে পাওয়া যায়না।
বাণী বসুর লেখনী নিয়ে কিছু না বলায় শ্রেয়। অসম্ভব শক্তিমান একজন লেখক তিনি। গানের রাগ-সুর না বুঝলেও গান্ধর্বীর সৌন্দর্য সুধা পান করতে সাধারণ একজন পাঠকের কোনো অসুবিধে হবেনা।...more
