While I appreciated the vastness and complexity of this book, am glad that I read it, and will probably read it again one day, I wouldn't say that I lWhile I appreciated the vastness and complexity of this book, am glad that I read it, and will probably read it again one day, I wouldn't say that I loved it. The book was so stark, and so depressing, and Tolstoy's long political and philosophical ranting was a little mind-numbing. It felt like he turned his existential crisis into a book and wrapped a soap opera around it. The language was so straight-forward that it was a relatively easy listen, although as always with an audiobook, I'm sure I missed a lot of nuance.
Maybe I would have liked this novel more if I'd read it in print, or if I were better educated in classic literature, but I doubt it. I think the style of literary realism just isn't pretty enough for me. The movie however, looks like it's primarily about pretty, so I'm still looking forward to seeing it.
The version of this novel that I listened to was the Constance Black Garnett translation and was very well narrated by Davina Porter....more
