Fascinating historical documentation on Indo (half-Dutch, half-Indonesian) soldiers who lived in two worlds. Peter Van Dongen opened a window to the past, a portrait of history full of turmoil in Indonesia during 1946-1950.
Johan Knevel, a Dutch Indo soldier, decided to join a military mission in Indonesia. For the sake of trace the status of the childhood nanny he missed, Johan stole the identity of a fellow Dutch Indo soldier. However, he always found himself trapped in various perilous standoffs between the Indonesian independence army, the communists, and the Dutch military authorities. Like a tiger trapped in Rampokan ritual, Johan had to choose between fight or flight.
Peter Van Dongen is a masterful visual storyteller. His panels are rich in details and symbolic imageries. Unfortunately, the dialogued panels are often placed in a weird and hard-to-follow sequence. His dialogue and characterisations can also be wooden at times, although this can be a case of imperfect translation of Dutch language nuances....more

In all honesty, this book speaks about interesting themes: from the dark side of Indonesian independence wars, the normalisation of violence, the mental problems (like PTSD, depression, anxiety), to the purpose and the meaning of life's journey itself. Unfortunately, structurally and technically, this book feels clumsy at different parts; from the messy prologue structure, focus on an unimportant side character (Mr. Kamaruddin), the obsolete depiction of sexuality, to the uneven and abrupt climax.
Taking place in Jakarta during the era after the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence (late 1940's) the story focuses on Teacher Isa, a humble and violence-hating schoolteacher, and Hazil, a composer turning to a freedom fighter. Fate brought these two men together in the Indonesian freedom fighter camp who have been sporadically fighting against NICA and Gurkha forces. Both men were bonded by the mutual passion for music. Hazil often visited Isa's house to talk about life and compose music.
On the other hand, Isa was undergoing tough mental struggles. After witnessing military violence and crossfire, he experienced PTSD and severe anxiety. He got even strangulated by the burden of the vital role given to him by the freedom fighters, all while being unable to tolerate the smallest forms of violence. Moreover, he was in a bind of an economic problem and unhappy married life. Pressured by various fears and trauma, Guru Isa's health took on a plunge, until at the climax he was tasked to accompany a high-risk mission for freedom fighters.
Once again, Teacher Isa's internal struggles were depicted superbly here, especially during the scene where he and Hazil discussing the repeating and endless road of endeavour, which in my reading resembles Sisyphus from Greek Myth who was trapped in an endless task. Both men then compose a musical piece inspired by the endless struggle. The endless clashes between individual struggles and collective endeavours were dissected from two perspectives: the optimistic and fiery Hazil and the fearful and trauma-riddled Teacher Isa. Unfortunately, when these two perspectives were revisited at the end of the book, the change/twist offered by Mochtar Lubis felt awkward, abrupt, and forced.
Although this book has a significant role in Indonesian literature history (especially in depicting the dark sides of independence wars and internal struggles), personally I am exhausted by literary works with uneven structure and cynical tone. This Yayasan Obor edition of the book is riddled with severe typos, where during the last part of the book there is a repetition of two big paragraphs. This also contributes to reducing my appreciation of this book....more

Home is a tale about diaspora, injustice, and intergenerational trauma.
During the political turmoil in Indonesia in the mid-1960s, Dimas Suryo, a journalist and poet, with his three friends were trapped overseas. They became political exiles thanks to their supposed affiliation with Indonesia Communist Party and Lekra (People's Cultural Institute). In the foreign land, they started new lives while trying to go home.
In 1998, Lintang Utara, Dimas' daughter, decided to go to her father's land of birth. As a part of her final thesis of film studies at Sorbonne University, Lintang planned to make a documentary movie about the survivors of Communist-accused genocide. Furthermore, she wanted to reach the Indonesian families and friends her father left. However, the turmoil of the Reformation movement trapped her, and the historical chaos repeated itself.
The first half of Home depicted the bittersweet Indonesian diaspora lives in France, from the rich literary traditions which enticed the four exiles, the cookings they made, to the interfamily drama. The second half bound those themes with the Indonesian social reality in the late 1990s, a cycle of brutality and violence which repeated itself after more than 30 years. How genocide and silencing of opposition voices kept blunting culture and injuring a nation.
One thing that might vastly improve this book is a focus. Some side plots and characters (like the threat of intelligence agent in Paris) became absolutely irrelevant at the end of the book. Some plot points also became repetitive in the epistolary format.
Beyond it all, Home is an extraordinarily important literary piece. This book is an indictment against collective amnesia and historical embezzlement. It demands clarity and justice from opaque Indonesian history. It binds two big conflicts (G30S and 1998 Reformation) which are left unresolved. It is the calls of seagulls longing for home....more

Reading this book is like coming home. Tobacco is one of the generational trades in my extended family in the city of M where the story in this book takes place. Not every day I see my hometown (with its quirky shops) and my family trade being featured in a literary work.
Telling the story of two kretek (Indonesian clove-based) cigarette trader families, The Cigarette Girl is an intimate historical fiction. Djagad and Idroes Moeria were two rival families vying for kretek trade dominance around the area of Central Java: M city, Magelang, and Yogyakarta. The enmity lasted for two generations until both families drifted apart thanks to historical turbulence in Indonesia that was Communist coup d'etat and genocide of the suspected Communists.
The story started when Pak Raja, the patriarch of Djagad family and the owner of Djagad Raja kretek, was dying. In his unconsciousness, he mentioned the name of Jeng Yah, his supposed long lost lover. This caused conflict within Djagad family since it poked open a bitter and mysterious history between Djagad family and Idroes Moeria. Lebas, Pak Raja's youngest son, departed to Kudus in Central Java to find Jeng Yah and fulfil what might be his father's last will: meeting his old love and finish the unfinished business.
From there the unravelling began. The history of two families was masterfully told by Ratih Kumala, featuring the detailed and rich lore of tobacco trading, kretek making, and Indonesian historical milestones.
For me, the lore about tobacco and kretek is the main charm of this book. While I was reading, I talked with my dad, who is a tobacco trader, about the politics and the trade secrets of the industry which were inseparable to Indonesian economics and history, that this book reached me on both intimate and intellectual-historical levels.
Beyond some writing consistencies, the weird censoring of city of M's name, and somewhat predictable plot, this book with its rich story deserves a place in Indonesian literary canon....more
