Forse per questo suo strano posizionamento ero convinta di averlo già letto in passato, ma l’unica cosa che ricordavo era la sensazione di angoscia che mi pervadeva per Avalon che svaniva nelle nebbie quasi dall’inizio del libro. Cosa che non accade, quindi vai a sapere cosa ho letto o penso di aver letto, visto che tutto il resto del romanzo mi è sembrata senza dubbio una prima lettura. Non mi si è affacciato alla mente nulla che potessi ricordare.
Le leggende arturiane che tutti in qualche modo abbiamo sentito narrare, qui sono raccontate esclusivamente da punti di vista femminili: Morgana, ovviamente, ma anche sua madre Igraine e le sue zie Viviana e Morgause, oltre a Ginevra e altre che hanno meno spazio (Niniane e Nimue).
E’ un approccio davvero interessante, perché questo genere di storie di solito vede le donne come un mero sfondo alle epiche imprese dei cavalieri. Le guerre sono sullo sfondo, sono viste da lontano dalle donne , che non vi prendono parte, mentre il focus è sull’introspezione dei personaggi femminili e della loro differente visione del mondo. Così Igraine cerca di trovare un equilibrio tra le sue origini in Avalon e il suo amore per Uter, mentre Viviana prima e Morgana poi vorrebbero fare in modo che Avalon restasse nel mondo, che non venisse dimenticata. La sete di potere appartiene a Morgause, invece Ginevra si tormenta per la sua sterilità e vuole imporre la religione in cui crede al marito, nonostante i giuramenti che legano Artù ad Avalon.
In particolare, in questo libro viene mostrata una Morgana diversa da come siamo abituati a immaginarla: non una strega senza scrupoli, ma una donna infelice e tormentata, che tenta di salvare il mondo e la religione a cui appartiene dall’avvento del cristianesimo. Ginevra, invece… beh che ve lo dico a fare. Quanti schiaffi avrei voluto darle! Una gatta morta pia e santerellina e, come tutte quelle così, ipocrita fino al midollo: bisogna abiurare la religione delle streghe e portare in battaglia il vessillo del Dio cristiano, ma magari chiediamo a Morgana un amuleto contro la sterilità. Sul rapporto con Lancillotto sorvolo, perché non sparo sulla Croce Rossa.
In generale il libro è bello, ma, soprattutto dopo la metà, ho avuto l’impressione che in certi momenti l’autrice si dilungasse un po’ troppo; è diventato un po’ pesante e talvolta ripetitivo, quindi molto meno scorrevole. Qualche taglio qua e là avrebbe giovato senza dubbio, soprattutto su riflessioni e concetti spesso ripetuti (sì, Lancillotto è bellissimo, lo abbiamo capito. Non è necessario scriverlo ogni due o tre pagine).
Oltre al punto di vista femminile, è molto interessante la contrapposizione tra la religione cristiana che sta prendendo piede in Britannia e il paganesimo al tramonto. Il pensiero dell’autrice sulla nuova religione è piuttosto evidente, anche se nel finale sembra cambiare opinione. Dal mio punto di vista, non ho potuto non notare che, pur in contesto lontano nello spazio e nel tempo, ho visto nella religione cristiana qui descritta molte ipocrisie attuali del cattolicesimo. Chiamatemi Jonah. Così inizia la narrazione in prima persona. Il protagonista forse si chiama John, ma altro non ci è dato sapere della sua identità. E’ uno scrittore e ci racconta di come la sua ricerca di materiale per un libro lo abbia trascinato in questa storia. Il libro avrebbe dovuto intitolarsi Il giorno in cui finì il mondo e narrare cosa avevano fatto alcuni americani il 6 agosto 1945, quando la prima bomba atomica veniva sganciata su Hiroshima. La ricerca di materiale porterà lo scrittore a conoscere i figli del defunto Felix Hoenikker, uno dei padri della bomba atomica, deceduto da anni, dopo aver fatto una nuova scoperta che potrebbe portare a una catastrofe ambientale ancora più grave dell’atomica.
Il romanzo di Vonnegut si può suddividere in due parti: nella prima parte, il protagonista indaga sulla vita del defunto scienziato, mentre nella seconda prende vita la storia vera e propria che lo condurrà nella Repubblica di San Lorenzo, un singolare stato caraibico.
Il punto fondamentale del libro è la critica sociale attraverso una feroce satira di ogni aspetto della società umana, in particolare quello religioso, con l’invenzione del bokononianesimo, un credo il cui precetto di base è che nulla di ciò che dice sia vero. L’umorismo macabro è il mezzo che Vonnegut utilizza per fare a pezzi ogni convinzione moderna, perfino il pericolo di un’arma di distruzione di massa nelle mani di quelle che, all’epoca del romanzo, erano le due superpotenze mondiali, USA e URSS. Niente viene risparmiato, perfino la sacralità tutta statunitense della bandiera e la loro convinzione di essere amati in tutto il mondo come loro amano se stessi.
Lo stile aiuta nella scorrevolezza: il libro è diviso in più di cento capitoli per solo poco più di duecento pagine. Ogni capitolo, alcuni dei quali si limitano a una poesia bokononiana, ha un titolo che centra il cuore della narrazione. I dialoghi spesso sono secchi, botta e risposta, con un ritmo incalzante che lascia senza fiato.
Che cosa non mi ha convinto, quindi? Principalmente il finale e alcuni episodi che sembrano un po’ fini a se stessi. Forse non ne ho capito io il significato profondo che l’autore vuole suggerire, ma sta di fatto che mi hanno lasciata un po’ perplessa e soprattutto nel finale, per quanto l’ultimo capitolo sia folgorante, mi sono sentita un po’ come se qualcosa non mi fosse stato spiegato fino in fondo.
Nel complesso comunque è un libro potente e, anche se perfettamente inserito nella sua epoca, molto attuale nel momento tragico che stiamo vivendo: in particolare vorrei porre l’accento sul concetto bokononiano di grandfalloon, ovvero di gruppo apparente, che crede di avere qualcosa in comune, ma in realtà è insignificante. Un uomo di trent’anni, George Orr, dopo un’intossicazione per eccesso di farmaci che si è procurato illegalmente, deve sottoporsi a terapia psichiatrica con il dottor Haber, un esperto di ricerca nel campo del sonno e dei sogni. Proprio i sogni sono il problema di George, che ne ha paura, perché ha scoperto di avere il potere di sognare cose che poi trasformano la realtà, lasciando solo a lui la memoria del cambiamento. Inizialmente scettico, il dottor Haber si troverà a scoprire che il suo paziente non è disturbato, ma dice la verità, perciò inizierà a manipolarne i sogni, con l’aiuto di una macchina di sua invenzione, per trasformare il mondo a suo piacimento.
Uno spunto intrigante per aprire una grande riflessione sulla mente umana e sulle problematiche del mondo: guerre, emergenza climatica, sovrappopolazione e scarsità di risorse… no, non è un libro recente, è stato scritto più di cinquant’anni fa. E’ ambientato in quello che era il futuro e che per noi è già passato e la società distopica che vi è descritta è forse solo appena peggio di quella che ci troviamo a vivere davvero.
Si possono cambiare le cose? Si devono cambiare le cose? O meglio, lo può e lo deve fare uno solo, convinto di agire per il bene di tutti?
Ciascuno di noi, almeno una volta nella vita, deve aver pensato: se io avessi il potere di cambiare le cose, tutto andrebbe meglio. E ciascuno di noi sbaglia, perché quello che è ‘meglio’ per una persona potrebbe non esserlo per l’altra.
Il problema non è il cambiamento, ma l’egoismo. Il narcisismo di chi è convinto di poter giocare a essere Dio, perché i problemi vanno affrontati insieme, come parte di un tutto che coinvolge l’umanità e ciò che la circonda.
E’ necessario accettare ciò che si è, non cambiare la propria natura, ma essere in grado di capire che capire tutto non è possibile.
Tra uno scenario distopico che sembra peggiorare a ogni cambio e un finale dall’afflato metafisico, non sono sicura di avere capito appieno il significato di questo libro. Come in altri suoi romanzi storici, in questo libro Crichton parte da un documento esistente, il manoscritto di Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, un resoconto del viaCome in altri suoi romanzi storici, in questo libro Crichton parte da un documento esistente, il manoscritto di Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, un resoconto del viaggio che tra gli anni 921-922 il viaggiatore arabo fece in Scandinavia e che è una preziosa testimonianza delle usanze delle popolazioni vichinghe dell’epoca. A questo, viene mescolato uno dei più celebri poemi epici anglosassoni e io mi vergogno di dire che mi ci è voluto un po’ per capirlo, quando già dal nome del guerriero normanno capo della spedizione, almeno qualche dubbio avrebbe dovuto venirmi.
Il risultato è un romanzo che ha la forma di un resoconto di viaggio, in cui il narratore mantiene un certo distacco anche dalla descrizione di particolari molto macabri e cruenti, e si assicura di specificare ciò che ha visto con i propri occhi e ciò che gli è stato solo raccontato e di cui perciò non può avere prova di veridicità.
Non so se la colpa è di questo stile molto freddo, ma non posso dire che questo libro mi abbia coinvolto più di tanto. Forse anche la trama un po’ scarna e la brevità hanno contribuito a far sì che sia uno dei lavori di Crichton che ho apprezzato meno, e che non credo leggerei una seconda volta, mentre altri libri suoi li ho letti fino alla nausea....more

Una volta preso l’abbrivio però, il libro è diventato scorrevolissimo e mi ci è voluta solo una sera per terminarlo. Questo non significa che sia stata una lettura facile, al contrario: è uno dei libri più strazianti che abbia mai letto.
La storia di George e Lennie, braccianti che sperano di vivere il Sogno Americano e di arrivare a possedere il loro ‘pezzo di terra’, è di quelle che ti lasciano dentro uno sconforto e un’amarezza senza fine e ti fanno capire che quel famoso Sogno in realtà per la maggior parte di chi ci ha creduto è stato solo un miraggio.
Steinbeck, in poco più di cento pagine, riesce a tratteggiare personaggi molto ben caratterizzati e a costruire una storia intensa in cui nulla è lasciato al caso e ogni particolare ha un suo significato. Si parla non solo del Sogno a cui aspirano gli ultimi, ma anche di amicizia e di solitudine, di crudeltà e di innocenza. C’è una donna, che vorrebbe solo un po’ di attenzione, ma nessuno la vede, se non come una probabile fonte di guai. Ci sono i topi, ma anche i cani e i conigli, però questi solo nei sogni. A partire da un’osservazione (viviamo la miglior parte della vita all’inizio e la peggiore alla fine), Fitzgerald costruisce una storia a dir poco surreale, in cui un uomo nasce come un vecchio e ringiovanisce con il passare degli anni, fino a diventare il neonato che non era stato quando è venuto al mondo.
Chissà, forse se fosse così per tutti, potremmo anche goderci la situazione, ma il protagonista è il solo che vive questo fenomeno assurdo, quindi viene visto e trattato come un paria per la maggior parte della sua vita: nell’età di mezzo ci sono momenti felici e di successo, ma per la maggior parte del tempo, l’uomo è detestato anche dalla sua stessa famiglia, che sembra credere che lo faccia apposta a ringiovanire.
Non so quali fossero gli intenti dell’autore nello scrivere questa storia, seri e faceti, ma io ci ho visto un’allegoria estremizzata della condizione di persone che vengono considerate diverse e non omologate alla massa, e perciò isolate e disprezzate; la frustrazione che prova Benjamin quando non viene creduto a proposito della sua età è la frustrazione di chi racconta la verità ma come una Cassandra viene irriso....more
Sono un po’ combattuta nel giudicare questo libro. La sinossi mi aveva incuriosito parecchio, e il primo capitolo (molto lungo) mi sembrava un’ottima pSono un po’ combattuta nel giudicare questo libro. La sinossi mi aveva incuriosito parecchio, e il primo capitolo (molto lungo) mi sembrava un’ottima premessa per il romanzo. Proseguendo nella lettura mi sono però resa conto che questo non è un vero e proprio romanzo, è più che altro una raccolta di racconti, ognuno dei quali rappresentato in uno dei lunghissimi capitoli.
Tra i primi racconti ci sono dei legami, anche se deboli (personaggi protagonisti di un racconto precedente o successivo che compaiono in una piccola parte), ma, mano a mano che si procede, solo qualche nome geografico qua e là resta come collante.
I racconti non sono male, ma, dal primo, mi sarei aspettata un’evoluzione della storia, con risposte agli interrogativi che si pongono (chi è in realtà Pandelume, perché vuole l’amuleto del principe Kandive) e approfondimento sui personaggi presentati come protagonisti (Turjan e T’sain). Invece perdiamo tutti quasi subito, a favore di nuovi personaggi e nuove storie che, ripeto, si lasciano leggere, ma, se tutto fosse stato presentato subito come una raccolta di racconti credo che sarei riuscita ad apprezzarli di più.
Un altro punto dolente è l’utilizzo di moltissimi nomi di luoghi e persone presenti e passati, ma nessuna spiegazione per il lettore. Il worldbuilding è un po’ carente: sappiamo che il sole è nella sua fase di gigante rossa e la terra presto morirà, quindi siamo in futuro remotissimo, però poco sappiamo di quello che è avvenuto ai vari regni/imperi/stati che vengono nominati nel testo. Non dico che avrei voluto sapere di tutti (sono troppi), ma qualcosa in più lo avrei apprezzato.
Il libro è il primo di una serie, ma ora mi chiedo se i vari personaggi presentati nei diversi racconti assumeranno di nuovo un ruolo di rilievo nel volumi successivi, oppure se avremo nuovi protagonisti e nuovi racconti ambientati nell’epoca del crepuscolo della Terra....more

E così, quando il dottore le portò me, annunciandole: “Signora, ha avuto un bellissimo bambino, bello vivace!” mia madre pare abbia risposto: “Lo vuole lei per caso?” Ma sono convinto che stesse scherzando, o almeno lo spero.
Ammettiamolo: solo un uomo come Mel Brooks potrebbe vantare un aneddoto comico perfino sulla propria nascita. Classe 1926, Melvin Kaminsky capisce fin da subito che il suo destino non può essere quello di un qualsiasi ragazzo ebreo di Brooklyn, cioè andare a lavorare nella fabbrica di tessuti della zona. La sua passione per il cinema e per i musical di Broadway, oltre al suo innato talento per la comicità, faranno di lui uno degli artisti più eclettici del XX secolo: autore televisivo, sceneggiatore, regista, attore e produttore, oltre che cantante, musicista e compositore. Nella sua vita arrivata quasi al secolo, il genio di Mel Brooks ha prodotto letteralmente di tutto.
Nel 2020, come tutti rinchiuso in caso per la pandemia, alla veneranda età di 94 anni e spronato dall’ultimogenito Max (famoso scrittore), decide di mettersi a raccontare la storia della sua lunga carriera, dall’infanzia agli infiniti riconoscimenti ricevuti.
Pur amando moltissimo i suoi film (almeno, quelli che ho visto), in particolare Frankenstein Junior, per me uno dei più grandi capolavori della storia del cinema, devo ammettere che questo libro mi è pesato più di quanto pensassi.
Non mancano gli aneddoti divertenti, ma rispetto alla mole del libro non bastano a controbilanciare tutto il resto.
Il giudizio è comunque positivo per l’infinita stima per il personaggio e le risate che mi sono fatta vedendo i suoi film (devo assolutamente recuperare quelli che mi mancano), ma il libro è a tratti un po’ pesantino, anche considerata la sua lunghezza.
Forse mi aspettavo un racconto più variegato: dopo la parte iniziale, troviamo una serie di capitoli ciascuno dedicato a uno dei suoi film, e tutti più o meno con la stessa struttura. Idea, scrittura, cast, riprese, reazione del pubblico… ben poche variazioni sul tema e una sfilza di nomi che mandano un po’ in confusione, perché è impossibile ricordarli tutti, anche se sono già stati citati più volte. In più, sembra che queste persone che Brooks ha incontrato siano tutte piene di talento, simpatiche, brillanti, eccezionali. Non dubito che lo fossero, ma possibile che almeno uno stronzo non ci fosse? Cioè, io più vado avanti e più incontro persone che vorrei non avere incontrato… che sia una sorta di compensazione cosmica, per cui tutti gli stronzi (a eccezione di quelli a bordo della Space Balls 1) che non ha beccato lui, sono toccati a me?...more

Celaena ‘comecazzosileggestonome’ Sardothien è un’Assassina, ma non una qualunque, è la più grande Assassinah del mondo conosciuto, cioè l’Erilea… credo. Credo, perché il worldbuilding è, come dire… avete presente Cara Delavigne? Ecco, quello in questo libro sta al worldbuilding come io sto a Cara Delavigne: abbiamo qualcosa in comune, tipo il giorno del compleanno, o il fatto di avere due braccia e due gambe, ma, messe davanti a un alieno, faticherebbe a credere che apparteniamo alla stessa specie. Anche di fronte a un terrestre a pensarci bene, comunque spero sia chiaro il concetto, ma non divaghiamo.
Eravamo all’Assasinah più terribile di tutte le terre (quali che siano), così terribile che ci vogliono tantissime guardie sempre a tenerla d’occhio e nonostante questo è quasi fuggita dal campo di prigionia più terribile del mondo. Poi quando la portano al castello vede via di fuga ovunque e saprebbe come fuggire in qualunque momento, ma non scappa. Perché? Boh. Forse perché la storia finirebbe in due capitoli e non sarebbe di grande appeal. Però lei è un’Assassinah vera, tutti la temono, ma è anche brava, non uccide bambini e ha pietà dei prigionieri e di chi viene massacrato in guerra, perché è un’Assassinah (fa figo) ma è buona: è la protagonista, non può essere cattiva, però è un po’ torda, visto che viene sorpresa alle spalle praticamente sempre mentre dorme, suona, mangia, legge, fa qualsiasi cosa. Meno male che è l’Assassinah e non la vittima sennò ciao.
Allora, dicevamo, c’è il torneo per scegliere il paladino del re e a sfidarsi sono tutti più o meno criminali, ne resterà soltanto uno, quindi ci deve essere una competizione ferocissima, quelli che sono eliminati muoiono, tipo Hunger Games, nessuno sa cosa sarà la prima terribile prova… affrontare un branco di mostri famelici? Sopravvivere nel mezzo di una tormenta di neve? Debellare una congrega di suore sataniste? No. (view spoiler)[Una gara di tiro con l’arco. Intanto alcuni aspiranti paladini vengono uccisi misteriosamente in modo brutto brutto brutto, ma non brutto quanto dialoghi in cui uno fa una domanda tipo ‘cosa c’è per cena stasera’ e la risposta che viene data è ‘domani piove’. Nonsense allo stato puro, quasi una forma d’arte.

(hide spoiler)], altre morti, ma lasciamo tutto in sottofondo, meglio concentrarci sulle schermaglie amorose tra l’Assassinah e il pretendente sfacciato, talmente imbarazzanti che l’unico modo che ho trovato per attenuare la sensazione di ridicolo è stato pensare che Maas aveva sedici anni quando ha iniziato a scrivere questa storia e usare questa frase come un mantra. L’altro pretendente è quello schivo, come da copione, e sappiamo anche come andrà a finire, sempre come da copione (Maas aveva sedici anni. Maas aveva sedici anni). Non che ci sia questa grande profonda riflessione sul mutamento dei propri sentimenti, più che altro sembra che a un certo punto uno dei due gliela faccia prudere più dell’altro e bon (Maas aveva sedici anni, Maas aveva sedici anni)
In mezzo a tutto quanto sopra descritto ci sono anche grandi magie oscure e grandi magie buone, che si svilupperanno meglio nei prossimi libri, almeno credo, visto che peggio mi sembra difficile. Tralascio la scrittura e l’editing, perché non sparo sulla Croce Rossa.
Giudizio complessivo? Così brutto da fare il giro e diventare trash allo stato puro. Il celeberrimo autore di Farenheit 451 ci trascina in un mondo dove l’incubo è rappresentato da un luogo che dovrebbe essere di divertimento, ma che spesso, in romanzi e film, si associa al terrore: il luna park. L’atmosfera cupa dell’autunno inoltrato e una prosa ricca e poetica trascinano il lettore pagina dopo pagina per seguire Jim, Will e Charles (il padre di Will), mentre cercano di salvare se stessi e gli altri da un destino di dolore e perdizione.
Un libro in cui l’angoscia è palpabile fin dall’inizio, prima con l’attesa e poi con le riflessioni e i discorsi dei protagonisti sulla natura del luna park e su come questo li porti a interrogarsi sulle loro vite, sulla voglia di crescere troppo in fretta dei ragazzi e su quella di potersi lasciare un po’ di anni alle spalle del padre, probabilmente la figura più interessante e complessa del romanzo.
Interessante notare come quest’ultimo che ha cinquantaquattro anni, venga considerato un vecchio: il libro, pubblicato nel 1962, riflette una mentalità ben diversa dalla nostra, dove un uomo di quell’età è ancora abbastanza giovane e non è raro che abbia un figlio adolescente, avuto intorno ai quarant’anni come Charles, per il quale però la cosa è spesso un peso, tanto sembra anomala.
Mi è piaciuta molto la soluzione, che porta alla fine della storia: si può dire che (view spoiler)[una risata ci salverà (hide spoiler)]

E’ quindi con l’entusiasmo di un bambino che accetta di sottoporsi a un’operazione che aumenterà notevolmente il suo QI: la procedura è già stata sperimentata con successo su una cavia di laboratorio di nome Algernon.
Il libro si articola come un diario che Charlie inizia a tenere quando viene proposto come soggetto ideale per l’esperimento dalla sua insegnante alla scuola per adulti ritardati, Miss Kinnian. La scrittura è inizialmente semplice e sgrammaticata, a causa delle limitate capacità intellettive di Charlie, ma si evolve con la storia, in una lenta progressione che accelera sempre di più mano a mano che l’intelligenza di Charlie aumenta e lo porta molto al di sopra della norma.
Al di là della componente fantascientifica di un simile esperimento, il romanzo mette in scena un dramma psicologico, di un uomo che vede stravolta la propria visone del mondo, il cui intelletto arriva a superare quello di chiunque gli stia intorno, ma che non riesce a crescere emotivamente con la stessa rapidità e ad affrontare i sentimenti e le pulsioni di un adulto senza essere mai davvero passato per un’adolescenza.
Il libro è tecnicamente strutturato benissimo e allo stesso tempo è molto toccante, specie nelle parti in cui Charlie si rende conto di come era considerato quando la sua intelligenza era limitata e quando ricorda cosa è successo con la sua famiglia. Il finale è molto commovente.
E Algernon? Algernon è lo specchio di Charlie, che vede nel topo quello che è destinato a capitare anche a lui e gli si affeziona fino alla fine, fino ai ‘fiori per Algernon’ del titolo, che per la mia sensibilità sono stati il momento supremo di commozione....more
Per una volta, non starò a lamentarmi del fatto che un unico libro in lingua originale (Dragonfly in amber) sia stato suddiviso in due volumi nell’ediPer una volta, non starò a lamentarmi del fatto che un unico libro in lingua originale (Dragonfly in amber) sia stato suddiviso in due volumi nell’edizione italiana, visto che, appena iniziato questo libro, sembra davvero che non si abbia più nulla a che fare con la parte che lo precede: cambia l’ambientazione, sembra cambiare tutto, di punto in bianco. Non fosse che ‘L’amuleto d’ambra’ ha un prologo e ‘Il ritorno’ un epilogo che si ricollegano, potrebbero essere due libri distinti anche se della stessa saga.
Non cambiano però i difetti. Devo stare a elencarli un’altra volta? Stile approssimativo, incongruenze tra i vari punti della storia, nessuna atmosfera coinvolgente, personaggi monocorde.
Si aggiunga che la maggior parte di quello che succede in precedenza a Parigi viene messo da parte: personaggi abbandonati, ai quali forse si accenna una volta o due, storyline che si sperava si potessero sviluppare vengono invece lasciate perdere, come se fossero state un riempitivo per aumentare il volume del libro. Cosa di cui, ovviamente, nessuno sentiva la necessità.
Il valoroso Jamie fa un altro paio di uscite da brividi (di paura, non di eccitazione come immagino fosse l’intento: Sono arrabbiato eccome! Ce l’ho con ogni tuo ricordo in cui io non sia presente, con ogni lacrima che hai versato per un altro, e con ogni secondo che hai passato nel letto di un altro uomo! Va’ al diavolo anche tu! E ancora: Sei mia, accidenti, Claire Fraser! Mia, e non ti dividerò con nessun altro, né con un uomo né con un ricordo né con nessun’altra cosa al mondo, finché saremo vivi entrambi. Non nominerai mai più il nome di un altro uomo. Capito? La sua smielosa romanticheria e il suo apparente sacrificio non sminuiscono queste uscite, soprattutto perché nella realtà simili frasi sono accompagnate da comportamenti che non includono il sacrificio personale, semmai quello dell’altra persona.
Finale scontato secondo la regola non scritta (o magari è scritta da qualche parte): se un personaggio si suppone sia morto, ma non lo si è visto morire, è vivo (a meno che si stia leggendo un libro di Martin).
Vogliamo però riconoscere almeno un pregio a questo lavoro di Gabaldon? Non mi è mai capitato che un’inutile prolissità, ben oltre il limite della noia, venisse accompagnata da un uso così esteso della tecnica ‘o dimo (cit.) Ci vuole talento anche per fare le cose nel peggior modo possibile....more

Una cosa che mi ha subito colpito è che ho scritto alcune cose che potrei riportare pari pari qui: stile approssimativo e una inutile prolissità. I difetti sono accentuati dal fatto che, in questo caso, non c’è una promessa intrigante, anche se forse la parte meno brutta del libro è l’introduzione, ambientata nel 1968. Ammettiamo pure che quella un pochino di curiosità addosso te la riesce a mettere. Appena ci ritroviamo però di nuovo nel XVIII secolo, la noia assoluta copre come una coltre ogni cosa. Non succede niente. Ma niente proprio. Se il primo volume si sarebbe potuto raccontare nella metà delle pagine effettivamente scritte, questo si sarebbe potuto condensare… boh, forse in un decimo. Anche meno. Non dico che un autore non si possa dilungare in dettagli non proprio indispensabili alla storia, ma che la arricchiscono permettendo di approfondire il contesto o i personaggi, però per farlo, detto autore deve sapere scrivere molto meglio di Gabaldon (che, ripeto, ha uno stile davvero approssimativo, con molte contraddizioni tra un punto e l’altro, e una scrittura piatta) e creare un contesto e personaggi che si abbia voglia di conoscere. Per quanto riguarda il contesto, l’autrice non riesce a rievocare l’atmosfera affascinante della Francia della metà del ‘700, mentre i personaggi nella migliore delle ipotesi sono poco interessanti, ma in realtà sono spesso insopportabili, i protagonisti in primis. Sorvolando poi sull'inverosimiglianza dei comportamenti che spesso hanno, specie Jamie, con i suoi slanci d’amore super romantici, che, diciamocelo, erano proprio tipici degli Highlanders dell’epoca, no?
La cosa peggiore però è il fatto che questi slanci romantici siano associati a un comportamento che vorrei evidenziare con delle citazioni prese dal libro: ‘Sei mia, per sempre, che tu lo desideri o no, che tu mi voglia oppure no. Mia, e io non ti lascerò andare’
‘Claire: “Non vedo il motivo per cui non dovrei lavorare ancora per qualche mese” Jamie: “Nessun motivo, a parte il fatto che io non te lo lascerò fare”’
E Claire, cosa fa con un uomo che le parla così? Lo molla su due piedi, giusto? No: lo ama alla follia e ci mette del suo. Citazioni:

Questo libro è il prequel del celeberrimo Le Nebbie di Avalon, libro che ho letto durante l’ultima Era Glaciale o giù di lì, e del quale non ricordo nQuesto libro è il prequel del celeberrimo Le Nebbie di Avalon, libro che ho letto durante l’ultima Era Glaciale o giù di lì, e del quale non ricordo nulla, tranne che Avalon era sempre più lontano nelle nebbie e i protagonisti erano i personaggi delle leggende arturiane. Probabilmente si trova di più in qualsiasi sinossi, quindi è un po’ come se il libro non l’avessi letto mai ed ecco perché ho pensato di avventurarmi nel prequel prima di iniziare una rilettura di un romanzo che ricordo almeno che mi era piaciuto.
Ora sto cercando di capire se anche la memoria delle mie sensazioni fa acqua da tutte le parti oppure se Le Luci di Atlantide è un libro di gran lunga peggiore del suo sequel. Visti i commenti che ho trovato in giro, opto per la seconda ipotesi.
A metà strada tra un manuale delle mammine pancine ante litteram e una Lolita consenziente e perdutamente innamorata di un uomo che potrebbe essere suo nonno, la prima parte passa tra l’irritazione e il disgusto.
Le sorelle protagoniste, Domaris e Doeris, fanno a gara per la Palma d’Oro dell’insopportabilità fatta personaggio. Peggio la supponente Domaris, emblema di perfezione assoluta, donna che è davvero donna perché crede nel valore supremo della maternità e a quello ambisce, mentre tratta ogni altro essere umano che giudica inferiore a sé come se fosse merda di gallina che le è rimasta appiccata alle scarpe circonfuse di luce? O peggio la viziatissima Doeris, che appena non è il centro del mondo fa i capricci come una bambina di tre anni, e, all’età di tredici anni, si lascia affascinare da un vecchio Guaritore che potrebbe essere suo nonno, amandolo perdutamente, anche se lui si comporta come un quello che in effetti è – un pedofilo che ama solo il potere (e, tra le altre cose, come se non bastasse, mette incinta pure sua figlia)?
Quando leggo un libro, evito di farmi condizionare dalla vita e dal pensiero dell’autore, perché sono convinta che le opere debbano prescindere da quello che ha fatto o pensato che le ha scritte, ma in questo caso è abbastanza difficile che la mente non vada agli oscuri fatti che hanno macchiato la reputazione di Zimmer Bradley, prima e dopo la sua morte. Non ho potuto evitarlo e mi sono sentita molto a disagio. Passando oltre, il libro inizia immergendo il lettore in un’ambientazione sconosciuta, un Tempio con caste sacerdotali, riti, sette e religioni di cui nulla si capisce. A me piace questo effetto, cioè trovarmi del tutto spaesata nelle prima pagine, come se l’autore desse per scontato cose che il lettore scoprirà poi invece nel corso del libro. Peccato che qui non si scopra niente. I gesti e i rituali restano sempre vaghi, così come l’organizzazione del tempio e della religione che si professa. Mi domando: l’autrice non ha voluto dare importanza a queste cose, oppure non le ha proprio definite, limitandosi a creare un'ambientazione superficiale che desse solo l'impressione di un mondo antico ed esoterico? Non lo sapremo mai.
Negli ultimi capitoli, il libro mi è parso un po’ più scorrevole, i personaggi di Domaris e Doeris migliorano un pochino con il passare degli anni e delle sofferenze, ma nel complesso non riesco proprio a promuovere questo libro, a dargli un voto alto (anche se devo ammettere che fino a più di metà ho pensato che meritasse zero).

Perché questo è un libro che si guarda in modo diverso a seconda che lo sia letto prima o dopo il 2020, l’anno in cui la parola ‘pandemia’ è entrata a far parte del nostro vocabolario quotidiano e ha cambiato in qualche modo tutti noi, chi in un modo, chi nell’altro.
E’ così infatti che la storia prende l’abbrivio, con un virus contagiosissimo e letale creato dall’uomo, che sfugge al controllo e si propaga da un individuo all’altro, nonostante gli sforzi dei militari (già, perché è colpa loro quello che sta accadendo) di contenere l’epidemia, e a causa dei militari che vogliono evitare la fuga di notizie. Diciamo che la mia opinione delle forze armate USA, già di partenza non proprio eccelsa (per usare un eufemismo) non è certo migliorata leggendo la prima parte di questo libro. Seguiamo quelli che sappiamo diventeranno i protagonisti della storia nel ‘prima’, quando le loro vite sono differenti e distanti, si evolvono in parallelo nei vari stati americani e la malattia si avvicina a loro, colpendo famiglia e amici. Questo però è soltanto il principio, perché la vera storia è quella che si sviluppa nel ‘dopo’, nel mondo che i sopravvissuti devono ricostruire (ma davvero si deve ricostruire un mondo che si è autodistrutto?), dividendosi in chi segue il bene e chi segue, più o meno volontariamente, il male, in una contrapposizione tra due potenze che paiono essere soprannaturali, che potrebbero essere Dio e Satana, ma che in fondo sono solo due sfaccettature dell’animo umano.
Come quando ho letto un altro grande classico formato ‘mattone’ di King, It, il commento che mi verrebbe da fare si può riassumere in due parole. Bello. Ma…
Dopo quel ma, ci potete mettere qualsiasi cosa vi venga in mente, vanno tutte bene: … ma l’ho letto nel momento sbagliato (vero, per caso o per sfiga questi due libri di King mi sono capitati fra le mani in momenti piuttosto difficili della mia vita) … ma alcune parti si sarebbero potute tranquillamente tagliare o almeno abbreviare (e non sono una persona che non apprezza i mattoni da più di mille pagine, anzi) … ma anche se all’inizio la voglia di continuare è molta, pian piano questa scema un po’, complice una seconda parte con capitoli un po’ troppo lunghi e prolissi ... ma non riesco a trovare in questa 'mitologia americana' molto fascino, forse perché proprio la società USA non ne esercita minimamente su di me … ma non lo rileggerei.
Il giudizio è positivo più di quanto non potrebbe sembrare dal commento, forse il tutto è inficiato dalle altissime aspettative, visto che ogni commento che ho letto o sentito giudica questo libro un capolavoro.

I ‘dispossessed’, letteralmente ‘espropriati’, o anche ‘nullatenenti’, sono gli abitanti di Anarres che, seguendo gli insegnamenti della pensatrice Odo, hanno fondato sull’inospitale luna una civiltà anarchica dove non esistono leggi né proprietà e ogni individuo opera per il bene comune come parte di un tutto, un unico organismo, senza costrizione alcuna. Il loro pianeta d’origine, Urras, ospita varie civiltà, tra le quali spiccano la capitalista A-Io e la comunista Thu. Un muro divide i due pianeti: è un muro reale, anche se facilmente scavalcabile che delimita il ‘porto di Anarres’, l’unica località dove poche volte l’anno alle navi di Urras è permesso di sbarcare, ma è anche un muro metaforico, perché le diverse civiltà non hanno contatti tra loro, se non un breve scambio di merci, e vedono l’altro luogo come l’inferno, l’altro popolo come il nemico da cui stare lontani. L’’Utopia ambigua’ è la civiltà che si è creata su Anarres, relativamente recente (meno di due secoli), dove non esiste denaro né proprietà, così come non dovrebbero esistere persone che non operano per il bene della società, non dovrebbero esistere leggi e ciascuno dovrebbe poter agire in completa libertà, rispondendo solo alla propria coscienza. Dovrebbe. Ed ecco perché l’Utopia è ambigua.
Scopriamo i due mondi attraverso Shevek, un fisico anarresiano che sta lavorando per creare una Teoria Temporale Generale e per farlo si reca su Urras. I capitoli si alternano tra il presente, in cui Shvek scopre le bellezze gli orrori della civiltà capitalista, e il passato, in cui noi impariamo a capire la (per noi) strana società di Anarres durante la storia personale del protagonista.
Il libro può essere considerato a tratti figlio del suo tempo (pubblicato nel 1974): A-Io e Thu rispecchiano USA e URSS ai tempi della Guerra Fredda. Nel corso del romanzo, i due stati rivali e andranno a combattersi in un piccolo stato dove c’è stata una rivoluzione, il Benbili, così come accadde per USA e URSS in Vietnam. Per altri versi, è un libro sempre attuale, perché si parla di temi universali come la fratellanza e la solidarietà, le ingiustizie sociali e il modo di risolverle, il ruolo della donna, quello della scienza e se sia possibile arrivare a creare una società ‘perfetta’.
Non è che no mi sia piaciuto, ma, viste le recensioni entusiaste di tanti altri lettori, forse mi aspettavo un libro che mi appassionasse di più, uno di quelli che non riesci a posare, e sui quali continui a riflettere, ma non è stato così.
Non sono riuscita a entrare del tutto in empatia con il protagonista e spesso le sue riflessioni lunghissime mi parevano un po’ tediose, sempre simili, un po’ come il pianeta che compie un giro intorno alla sua stella e non si può sapere quale sia il punto di partenza, perché continua a girare.
I temi sono interessanti, ma i concetti ripetitivi, forse perché si tratta di temi dei quali ormai si è scritto molto e molto ne ho già letto.
Non lo so, non so esattamente cosa sia andato storto con questo libro, forse solo le altissime aspettative, o forse no, ma resta il fatto che è un libro di cui capisco la grandezza, ma che non è riuscito a colpirmi nel profondo....more

Il secondo volume della dilogia Sei di Corvi costruisce la storia di un grande piano criminale, come il primo, ma la sviluppa in modo del tutto diverso: invece di una rocambolesca avventura per liberare un prezioso prigioniero, ci ritroviamo in una colossale truffa a scopo di vendetta.
Non starò a girarci troppo attorno: il primo libro è più bello. La genialità della storia che ti avvinghia alle pagine e ti impedisce di appoggiare il libro, e l’incontro con i protagonisti, che andiamo a conoscere nel profondo mano a mano che la trama si dipana, non possono essere ripetuti. Qui abbiamo una scatola cinese di imbrogli dentro imbrogli, con implicazioni finanziarie e politiche secondo le leggi della nazione di Kerch, che non sono sicura di avere capito bene fino in fondo. D’altra parte, finanza e politica non fanno per me nemmeno nel mondo reale, quindi tant’è. La storia non è male, anzi a tratti è anche geniale, ma è meno coinvolgente.
I punti forti di questo libro sono sicuramente lo sviluppo del personaggio di Wylan, che ottiene il suo punto di vista e assume spessore rispetto alla figurina un po’ di sfondo del primo volume, l’approfondimento degli altri personaggi e la loro crescita, oltre alla maggiore descrizione del funzionamento della società di Kerch, che in Sei di Corvi era appena accennata: basata solo sul denaro e gli affari, perfino nella sua religione. Quasi una metafora della nostra società, mi vien da dire.
Non cambiano i punti deboli già riscontrati nel primo libro: la scrittura non eccelsa di Bardugo in primis, anche se mi è capitato di domandarmi se a volte non si tratti solo di un problema di traduzione. Magari in una prossima vita troverò il tempo per confrontare la versione originale. I colpi di scena sono un po’ telefonati, ma, rispetto alla trilogia Grisha, almeno alcuni, se pur prevedibile nell’accadere, non lo sono nel modo in cui si sviluppano. Sempre a proposito della trilogia Grisha, in questo secondo libro è ancora più evidente quanto sia importante leggerla prima, perché i collegamenti nella parte che riguarda i personaggi Ravkiana sono molto espliciti.
Nel complesso un buon libro, non privo di punti deboli, ma che va a completare una dilogia piacevole, con un finale dolceamaro che lascia un piccolo nodo in gola....more

Leggendo la sinossi, mi ero immaginata un certo tipo di storia, con un determinato sviluppo, invece è qualcosa di completamente diverso. Io però a volte mi faccio questi film nella testa prima di leggere libri, ma non è che abbiano basi solide di alcun genere, quindi lasciamo stare i miei problemi mentali.
Il libro sembra diviso in due parti molto diverse come tono, trama e ambientazione, tanto da dare l’impressione di un taglio netto tra le due, non dico come due storie differenti, ma poco ci manca. Nella prima metà, abbiamo una specie di monologo interiore in cui il protagonista, un miliardario cinquantenne, ricostruisce la sua vita passata e i suoi pensieri durante un viaggio spaziale alla ricerca di nuove fonti di energia per la Terra. Già, perché siamo nel 2063 e il petrolio si è esaurito, la fonti di energia principale sono tornate a essere legna e carbone e la società è in rapido declino, anche considerando che il clima si fa sempre più rigido. Ben Belson, magnate in evidente crisi di mezza età, compie dunque un viaggio interstellare alla ricerca di quello che viene chiamato ‘uranio pulito’, cioè non radioattivo, e nel mentre ricostruisce la sua storia passata di bambino trascurato, il suo amore per Isabel e la sua impotenza sessuale arrivata negli ultimi anni.
Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi a quel punto da un racconto che sembra quasi partire dal finale, con il protagonista che si impone un esilio volontario su un pianeta molto peculiare che chiama con il suo nome, ma la seconda parte svolta, si torna sulla terra e la storia prende tutt’altra piega, con toni da thriller e intrighi geopolitici.
Non sono ben sicura di aver capito il messaggio di questo libro, anzi, no, sono sicura di non averlo capito proprio per niente. Una riflessione su come la crisi di mezza età possa colpire chiunque, anche un uomo che all’apparenza possiede tutto ciò che potrebbe desiderare? Un ammonimento sull’importanza della cura del pianeta e delle sue risorse? Un… boh, mi spiace, ma proprio non saprei che dire: il messaggio, qualunque fosse, non mi è arrivato.
Peccato, perché dopo aver letto il bellissimo ‘Solo il mimo canta al limitare del bosco’, avevo grandi aspettative su questo libro....more

L’avventura di un uomo del XIX secolo che, svenuto per un colpo alla testa, si ritrova a vivere nel VI secolo e viene creduto un potente mago può anche essere stata innovativa e divertente, per l’epoca in cui è scritta. Ora però che il tema dei viaggi nel tempo è usato e anche abusato, non si possono fare a meno di notare molte pecche nella narrazione, a cominciare dalla mancata spiegazione del viaggio stesso, fino alle evidente inesattezze storiche sull’Alto Medioevo, che farebbero impallidire il professor Barbero. Anche come riesca il protagonista a impiantare fabbriche e portare molta tecnologia del suo tempo nell’Inghilterra di re Artù viene dato come un fatto che avviene senza problemi (e senza spiegazioni) nel corso del tempo che l’uomo passa lì.
Certo, capisco l’intenzione della critica sociale alla monarchia, ai privilegi della nobiltà e della Chiesa Cattolica e all’oppressione del popolo, che accetta passivamente questo stato di cose, però mi sembra che la contrapposizione a tutto questo, cioè il pensiero del protagonista sia un po’ troppo simile al pensiero attuale degli statunitensi che si sentono i soli possessori di libertà e democrazia e la vogliono esportare a tutti i costi agli altri paesi, mantenendo però la loro supremazia.
E’ un giudizio molto influenzato da problematiche attuali, il mio, ma la lettura di questo libro mi ha fatot riflettere su come questa mentalità molto diffusa negli Stati Uniti sia davvero radicata in loro da molto tempo, e io di questa mentalità non posso proprio dire di essere un’ammiratrice.
