In marriage there are ties that bind, yet sometimes the ties can chafe - and strangle. These stories reach into the darker sides of human nature - incest, illegitimacy, rejection, resentment - exposing the joy and pain of human relationships in all their complexity. Love in the “golden years” ..husband's thoughts: “…Since then the lion had grown old and died …become a disregarded old lion skin warm to the body in cold weather…”
Witting never disappoints. This is a mix of short stories, all dealing with marriage. There are 3 stories which are about as good as it gets for a short story; they are emotive, painful, complex and memorable. The Survivors has Kevin, a shearer and knockabout, who seduces, impregnates and is forced to marry the underaged Gloria. Kevin is one despicable man as Gloria grows up quickly. Goodbye Ady, Goodbye Joe is the happiest story telling of an elderly couple who are forced to take refuge on their kitchen table as a major flood threatens their lives. The Man with the Impediment is the saddest, telling the story of Jim the son of Minna and her father. A sad tale of incest.
