For the young soccer player in your life - help then set their 'goal' of excellence with this book! It is amazing to me how much soccer has grown in America; I can remember only one family from Costa Rica in my neighborhood kicking a soccer ball around when I was growing up! Now soccer is played at parks around my house every weekend!

Another fabulous story to add to this incredible series! I love this fun, educational series about famous people, especially now that we have a famous soccer star involved in the mix!

Yet again, this Pele brings fun pictures and a great educational introduction to famous people from around the world. His upbringing and success is shown in a friendly manner that will draw in young readers. I absolutely think this series is a must read for those seeking some educational books for their little ones or students. The pictures also make it fun to read! I adore this series.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This volume here is about Pelé, one of the greatest footballers ever. I believe his story could be inspirational to everyone, especially seeing that he did a lot not only in the football world, but also to help bring people together.

A fab bio of the legendary soccer player! “Pelé” takes us through his humble beginnings in Brazil — to his multiple World Cup wins and later support of impoverished children as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador.

Love the fun illustrations, historic photos, and life timeline. A stellar addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS series that inspires kids and adults alike.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book tells the story of Pelé, one of the greatest footballers ever existed. I think for children may be very inspirational reading about this figure because he not only did great things on the soccer field, but also in real life trying to thelp those who needed it the most.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, also known as Pele, is a famous Brazilian Football Player. Pele was a humble boy who helped out his family when he became successful. He went on to help children who grew up in poverty, like himself. This is another wonderful addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series and contains lovely illustrations throughout. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my digital copy.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Pele is a new biography for young readers in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I've reviewed a number of these titles and all of them are delightful and exuberant little books which cover the lives of famous cultural, science, arts, and innovative icons while maintaining an age-appropriate level of detail.

Due out 1st Sept 2020 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln imprint, it'll be 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.

Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The gentle and vibrant illustrations were well done. The art by Camila Rosa is appealing and colorful and supports the story. The illustrations are bold and simple.

Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition. I also appreciate that there are suggestions for further reading in the back of the book with the timeline of Pele's life.

Four stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift. Pele is obviously a supremely gifted athlete, but the book also highlights his accomplishments as an ambassador for equality and his charitable works. This book is a tribute to an icon who still represents the ideals of sportsmanship and brotherhood for so many thousands of people worldwide. It's nice to see him being introduced to a new generation of kids.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

This book tells the story of a small boy, who one day promised his father he'd win the world cup for Brazil and kept his word.

Most often, the books from the little people BIG DREAMS series fall into one of two categories for me: 1. never heard of that person before and 2. oh, them. This was a kind of third category: I knew the name Pelé, I knew he was a football player from Brazil. The end.
So this series aimed at toddlers contributed to my general knowledge. Again.

The illustrations are very colourful and fit nicely to the setting. In general, I feel that they always pick the right illustrators so the illustration style compliments the story in every possible way.

Another thing I liked was that they avoided telling their readers that football is a thing for boys. The message was: You can do this if you want to! It doesn't matter who you are, where you are born, just try it! Work for it!
That's the kind of story I want toddlers to hear.

Pele // by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara // illustrated by Camila Rosa

When I saw this book, I just knew I had to read it! My husband is a big soccer fan and when I asked him about Pele, he excitedly told me half of the things I ended up reading in this book! I love how this series is always able to condense someone's story into a short book while still conveying the importance of that person and the lessons we can learn from them. I've become a big fan of Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara through these books and, once again, she did not disappoint. This book has a spot on our shelves for sure. The illustrations by Camila Rose are well done and accompany the story beautifully.

Pelé is the greatest Brazilian soccer player in the world. Pelé is an all-time top scorer and even holds a Guinness World Record. In 1999, Pelé was elected Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and was included in the TIME list of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. Yes! He was that good! Pelé began playing football (what Americans refer to as soccer) at the age of 15. At 16, he was playing on Brazil's national team. Pelé led his team to three FIFA World Cups: 1958, 1960, and 1962.

If you were a kid in the '70s like me, you knew who Pelé was. He was an international star and one of the greatest athletes to ever live. Sharing this legendary sports figure with the young soccer players in my life has been so much fun. The Little People, BIG DREAMS series introduces children to iconic figures from today and the past. It allows kids to see that every hero was once a child with a dream. These wonderful biography books teach our Littles that anyone is capable of dreaming big, setting goals, and succeeding no matter what! Readers are introduced to the real-life icon through actual photos at the end of the book. Easy to comprehend through an illustrated biographical story. As a children's book collector, I adore these books. They're great!

Another good addition to this series, which I enjoy. I knew who Pelé was but didn't know his history or the work he did outside of soccer/football. The author included just enough tidbits about his beginning years and what he did beyond sport to show the depth of his story.

I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was another great book in the Little People, BIG DREAMS about the life of Pelé. Even as an adult these books introduce me to people that I may not know or have a cursory knowledge of; thank you for teaching me something new again! I now understand why the people love Pelé so much, he brought the world cup home to Brazil and then used his fame to make a difference in the world.

This is another wonderful addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS collection. This is the story of Edson Arantes do Nascumento, better known as Pelé. As a young boy he practiced his soccer/football skills with what he had in his poor Brazilian neighborhood, which was a sock full of rags for a ball. He was determined to one day lead his country to a World Cup victory, and succeeded many times! He also gave back to communities that were living in poverty, and was a UNESCO ambassador.

The writing is simple and engaging and the illustrations are bright and cheerful. The story will draw young readers in and show that being united is the most important way to be, on and off the field.

I've read a handful of picture books in the Little People, Big Dreams series and they are all so great. This on is about soccer legend Pele. Born Edson Arantes, Pele was given his nickname Pele by his schoolmates. He loved playing soccer from a very young age. He even made his own soccer ball out of old socks and newspapers since his family couldn't afford to buy a ball. His inspiring career took him from professional soccer to the World Cup and international fame.

Just like the other books in this series, this book is full of appealing illustrations and lets kids know about an important figure who was able to achieve great things.

This was a suitable entrant to this series of inspiring life stories for the very young, with the sporting subject of one of the world's most famous footballers. Kudos and thanks to the book, too, for calling it football, and not the heinously nasal "soccer" noise the Yanks label it with. We don't really see the truth of the slums he would have grown up in, but the story is fine in conveying the rise to fame, glory and respect that both his natural talent and his hard work led to. The artwork is very bright, and suitably dynamic, and tells us there are a lot more pasty-white ginger people in Brazil than we ever thought possible. Still, equality and all that. It's the rags-to-riches story we come here for, though, and the idea that anybody anywhere can become the best at whatever they want to achieve, which is yet again the moral of this whole cycle of books.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 1st September 2020 - publication day!

I really love the books in this series and this book on Pele is a great addition to the series!

Most people know Pele as purely a footballer but this book shows that he is so much more than that, he has done a lot of work encouraging children from poorer backgrounds to get the same chances as those who are lucky enough to have more.

The book has some lovely images and it was well written and easy to follow - it is 5 stars from me for this one, it is another great addition to this seres - very highly recommended!

Pelé loved football from a young age. He didn’t have a ball, so he made one with things in his home. When young Pelé saw his father cry because Brazil’s team lost the World Cup, Pelé promised his father that he would make the national team and win the World Cup. Pelé worked hard. The entire country celebrated when he helped Brazil win the World Cup. In addition to soccer, Pelé was a humanitarian.

Little People Big Dreams is a great series of biographies for children. I would recommend the books for any classroom library.

I really like this book series! I really love how they have very individual styles that fit well with the person featured and does not sugarcoat the circumstances. I also feel like they feature people from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds, which I love! The story is nice, the moments chosen feels like the right ones to really tell Pelé's story and highlight his passion for humanitarian work!

Ein Traum,

grenzenloser Ehrgeiz

Eigener Eindruck:

Pelé is a children's picture book written by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and illustrated by Camila Rosa. It is a cursory biography of Edson Arantes do Nascimento a.k.a. Pelé – the professional footballer.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as a forward. Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century. During his playing days, Pelé was for a period the best-paid athlete in the world.

Vegara's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It starts off with a young Pelé growing up poor in his neighborhood in Brazil with a ball made with a sock full of rags, but he believed that one day he would lead his country to win a World Cup. Backmatter includes a concise and informative biography timeline of Pelé's life. Rosa's illustrations are simplistic and colorful, but apropos to the target audience.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It traces Pelé's life from his humble life of poverty with a homemade ball made from rags to a successful career as one of the preeminent footballers in the world.

All in all, Pelé is a wonderful biography of a little boy who had a dream and worked hard to achieve his dreams and beyond to become one of the most notable footballers in the world.

“Pelé” is about the journey he had to make it on to the professional soccer field and his work off the field.
Pelé connects Boel Westin’s “Nostalgia” with the need of being back home and how it is tied with the basis of change and emotion. Pelé grew up in the streets of Bauru playing soccer with no shoes and bricks as goal posts. No traditional ball as the soccer ball was a sock filled with newspaper and tied with string. These memories are not sad, but cheerful as Pelé loved playing the sport more than anything. He promises that he will win the World Cup for his country, leaving his family and joining a professional sports club. Understanding the greatness of the sport Pelé used his influence to unite all people together. Pelé wanted to make a real change joining a team only if they opened training camps for children in need. Pelé views his home country and upbringing as being happy to be able to do things he wants, while also giving back to the people who allowed him to have that experience. The images shown throughout revolve around Pelé as the focus point. He is mostly viewed front and center with a face of happiness whether it be from scoring a goal or helping others. The images of where he grew up are visible, seeing clothes air dry and colorful homes. When being surrounded by others, all skin tones and backgrounds are shown showing the unity Pelé wanted to achieve.

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Camila Rosa
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Football (Soccer), Biographic
Setting: Global but primarily Brazil.
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

Sánchez Vegara has balanced the information provided balancing his sporting fame and his humanitarian efforts. I liked the information provided in the additional information section like where his nickname Pelé came from, given his name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Pelé came from a mispronunciation of a local footballer. The one piece of information I'm surprised wasn't included was his serving as the 1st Minister for Sports between 1995-1998.

Camila Rosa was a fantastic choice for the illustrator for Pelé. Her rosy cheeks style makes all the characters look perpetually happy, particularly the young ones. Her style for Pelé allows him to age up easily and be recognisable in each scene (always important in this series). As a random comment as part of the illustration choices, the green cover chosen by Sasha Moxon (the designer) was a perfect choice for a man so iconic as a Brazilian.

This book talks about Pele’s beginnings. He was from a slum in brazil were growing up he didn’t even have enough money to have a real soccer ball. But he never let that stop him. He came home one day and saw his father crying because their country had lost in the world cup that day. He made a promise to his father that he’ll help Brazil win it. He kept working hard and heat only 15 years old earned a spot on brazil's highest-ranked club. Not only that at 16 he helped Brazil win the world cup like he promised his father! He won every award possible for a soccer player and because of this he went around the world and showed people how the game of soccer could unite people instead of divide them. I really like this book. The overall theme would be perseverance because you see a boy from the slums grow up to be the biggest name in soccer! You need this book for your class, maybe to read when you have a child who is interested in soccer. The comic book-like illustrations will keep them engaged and wanting more!
