There is a reason why I love thrillers. I think this is one genre that has yet to see a dry spell when it comes to content and authors. Even after reading so many over the years, there is still room for finding more good ones and Hide and Seek is one such example. This is my first Mary Burton book and with it I have found another author that I want to read more from.
This is book one in the romantic suspense Criminal Profiler series, but it is not the first outing for the main characters Special Agent Macy Crow and former FBI agent and now Sheriff of Deep Run, Virginia Mike Nevada who were introduced, as I found out in another book by the author titled, 'Cut and Run'; however, since the storyline of this book is different to the other one and enough bits of the previous book are mentioned here, I did not feel any hindrance while reading the book.
This book starts with a cold case. Tobi Turner's, a high school student who went missing in 2004, skeleton remains are found in a shaft of an abandoned barn in 2019 during a project of breaking the building down. Mike Nevada calls in Macy Crow to help out with the case. Macy soon discovers a connection between the rape and murder of Tobi by strangulation to other cases of rape and attempted strangulation which occured around the same time as Tobi's disappearance as well as succeeding years in different areas around the country. While they are investigating this case, a fresh victim's body is found which leads Macy to conclude that not only is it the work of the same person but the person could be someone very close to home.
With a gripping plot line and well etched out characters, this is a fast paced book without a dull moment.

First Mary Burton read and it certainly won't be my last! A police / FBI procedural with a dash of romance, Hide and Seek wasted no time in getting the action started. When the remains of local girl, Tobi Turner , who went missing in 2004 are discovered the local police call on the expertise of the FBI. I loved the characters especially Special Agent Macy Crow and Deputy Sheriff Bennett. She's fighting her own personal battles, but her dogged determination to get answers is what really won me over. As Macy and the local Sheriff , Mike Nevada(an ex lover) look into the case, they soon stumble upon additional information that indicates that this case may be bigger than they thought possible.
So why the 4 star? Well, as fine as the romance between Mike and Macy is over the course of the storyline. There was this one oddly placed steamy sex scene that pops up right in the middle of everything in the case being solved that distracted rather than drove the plot.
Overall, pulse pounding action and memorable characters make the Criminal Profiler series on my must watch list.

Hide and Seek by Mary Burton is the first book of the new romantic suspense Criminal Profiler series. While this is listed as the first book of a new series it isn’t the first look at the characters. Macy’s accident that she had just recovered from actually happened in Cut and Run by Mary Burton with her having ties to those characters and a part in that story which gets mentions in this book so one may want to pick that up first although it’s not totally necessary.
Hide and Seek begins with Special Agent Macy Crow looking for her new position as she returns from her accident. As Macy agrees to prove herself worthy she gets sent to investigate a new case when the bones of a missing girl had been found.
Beginning to investigate Macy finds herself again working with the local sheriff, Mike Nevada who she had once shared a night together. Although the bones that were found were from a fifteen year old case Macy quickly begins to find links between this case and others from the past as they discover a killer.

Macy was injured during the investigation Faith was helping with, the investigation that actually led them to each other. Now, Macy is ready to get back out in the field and prove that she can still do her job and do it well. Which leads her Deep Run, Virginia, and to one-time lover Mike Nevada.
If you know me then you know I'm a huge fan of Mary Burton. With each book I only fall deeper and deeper into love with her books and storytelling. I'm never disappointed when I pick up one of her stories and this book was no different. She had me on the edge of my seat trying to piece together the puzzle she created. I love when I have to work for the answers and they aren't obvious right from the start. With Macy and Nevada's investigation I had so many theories on what happened or was going to happen and it had me captivated.
One of the amazing things about Ms. Burton's books is that she involves all the characters. It's not just the main ones that you fall in love with, it's all the secondary characters that also have so many secrets that come out and have you loving them as well. There's so much to discover from every character involved and I find it truly fascinating. Honestly, if you haven't read one of her books by now you are completely missing out and I definitely vote for you to start with this one.

Hide and Seek was another phenomenal romantic suspense from author Mary Burton and a fantastic start to a new series.
FBI Special Agent Macy Crow is not a woman who gives up easily. Still in recovery after a hit and run almost killed her, Macy is eager to get back into the field. Her first assignment is the case of Tobi Turner, a high school girl whose bones were recently found after fifteen years. Working with Macy is local sheriff Mike Nevada, a former agent and someone Macy has a personal connection with. As Macy and Mike work Tobi’s case, the pair uncover several other cases from the time Tobi went missing that now appear to be connected. And after another woman goes missing, Macy and Mike are in a race to find the killer before it’s too late.
Macy is the sister of Faith McIntyre, the main character in the author’s recent book Cut and Run. It was during the events of Cut and Run that Macy was involved in the hit and run that almost killed her that she’s still suffering the effects from in this book. Macy despises the limitations she now has due to her injury and as a result she pushes herself harder than she should so soon after being hurt. I understood Macy’s frustrations as she was a woman used to doing and doesn’t like being sidelined.
Macy worked with Mike in the past and the two had a no strings relationship at one point. When the pair meet again, it’s clear there’s still something between them and I enjoyed watching them dance around their obvious attraction. The pair work well together and they understand each other both professionally and personally. When their relationship does progress, I enjoyed the direction things went and felt it fit their relationship perfectly. Plus the sex scenes between the duo are fantastically done with the perfect amount of steaminess.
The investigation in this book was incredibly interesting and I was curious who would end up being the killer. The killer in this book is extremely depraved, having moved from stalking to rape to murder. The more Macy and Mike looked into Tobi’s death and the string of rapes, the more the pair uncovered. At times it felt like they were finding one thing after another which did lead to the book being quite fast paced. I liked that there weren’t any dull moments and felt the author did a great job keeping you hooked. The ending of the book was very well done in my opinion and I thought the final showdown with the killer in particular was fantastic.
Overall I really enjoyed Hide and Seek and I really liked the connection to her previous book Cut and Run. I definitely recommend these books if you prefer your romantic suspense to focus more on the suspense aspects.

Darkly intriguing, incredibly menacing, and briskly paced!
In this compelling first installment in the Criminal Profiler series, Hide and Seek, Burton has written a tortuous whodunit where cases from the present and the past will intertwine, suspects will be abundant, and danger will lurk just around the corner.
The writing is tight and tense. The characters are astute, consumed, dependable, and persistent. And the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat as it submerges you, page after page, into a world of murder, abduction, arrogance, rape, violence, terror, deception, palpable chemistry, and a side of steamy romance.
It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of Mary Burton’s stories, and like all of her previous novels I’ve read, Hide and Seek keeps you engrossed, guessing, and without a doubt wanting more.

4 Risking It All Stars

It was shocking to me to realize, this was my first Mary Burton read...As someone who had a history of mysteries and thrillers before my 0bsession with romance, I was stunned by this absence. Well, I can testify it will not be my last as Ms. Burton has a huge catalog and I will be diving in.
Special Agent Macy Crow knows challenges... it seems that is all she has ever dealt with. You could say surviving a life threating hit and run could be the ultimate challenge for Macy. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelming necessary recovery, she used her desire to be part of the FBI’s elite profiling team to pull her through the tough times. Macy stayed focused and came back to work.
When there is an opportunity to show she is serious about that coveted position on the profiling team, Macy convinces the powers that be to give her a chance on a cold case that popped up. Macy is off to look into the discovery of 15-year-old bones of a young high school girl.
What adds to this exercise for Macy is the man she has to work with. Mike Nevada was just like Macy, a Special Agent, and now is the town's sheriff. He also happened to be a onetime lover of hers so there is a respect and past relationship which binds.
These two work this case and uncover more than expected... it looks like this one girl was not the only one touched by this monster. As they both uncover the past, the perpetrator rises again and locks onto Macy as his next target.
This read like a runaway train and I held on to the end. Although the characters had been introduced in Cut and Run, I had no difficulty in jumping into this new series.

She is handed a 15 year old missing person case of Tobi Turner whose bones were recently found. Macy works with local Sheriff Mike Nevada to solve the case when she finds a link between the rapes in the past and Tobi Turner’s murder. Can Macy and Mike race against time to find answers and stop this maniac before someone else gets hurt?
Hide and Seek by Mary Burton is the first book in Criminal Profiler series. I enjoy reading Mary Burton’s books and this one did not disappoint .A well written fast paced plot , with interesting characters made in an enjoyable read though I would suggest reading Cut and Run first to understand the backstories of the characters.

Macy is back at the Bureau on desk duty after a hit and run assault almost cost her life, but she’s got a chance at getting back in the field when the bones of a missing teenager, Tobi Turner, who disappeared fifteen years earlier are found and DNA connects the case to other unsolved assaults around the county. She’s pulled in to connect the dots while working with her former FBI colleague and lover, the newly elected sheriff, Mike Nevada.
There was never a dull moment, especially since the killer is on the hunt and targeting new victims as Mike and Macy race to unmask this villain. To find Tobi’s killer they must go back to the beginning, interviewing her friends and schoolmates who’ve since grown up. Macy uses her top-notch instincts along with the FBI’s cutting-edge technology to analyze the evidence, melding good old-fashioned detective work with modern crime fighting tools, and I enjoyed the process.
The romance between Macy and Mike wasn’t the focus for the most part, which made sense given the urgency of the case, but their chemistry was a constant nice buzz in the background. Macy’s a little unsure of Mike’s feelings since she’s still not at 100% physically since the hit and run, but Mike’s intent was always clear to me, and I knew it was just a matter of time before their feelings turned into more.
I could not put this one down! Hide and Seek was an addictive, fast-paced mystery with a nice bit of romance. Macy Crow was a secondary character in Cut and Run, where her attack occurs, but it’s not necessary to read it before diving into Hide and Seek. I enjoyed seeing Macy get back on her feet after the assault, never letting self-pity or doubt creep in and cripple her.

Great, twisty plot and a hot, co-workers and lovers romance. It worked, but not without some minor problems. The backstories were muddled and not fully explained, or maybe I just lost interest. Lots of characters made it tough to keep track, or that could be that I was more interested in the softball games I was watching while reading, not sure. Anyway, this was a great Karen Rose wannabe and a solid read.
Special Agent Macy Crow is working her way back to full functionality and it is a tough road after she is nearly killed by a hit and run driver on a case that was more personal than professional. Great, twisty plot and a hot, co-workers and lovers romance. It worked, but not without some minor problems. The backstories were muddled and not fully explained, or maybe I just lost interest. Lots of characters made it tough to keep track, or that could be that I was more interested in the softball games I was watching while reading, not sure. Anyway, this was a great Karen Rose wannabe and a solid read.

Mary Burton has been on my to read list for years. Hide and Seek was a great introduction to her. The start of a new series, this book centers on Macy, an FBI agent coming off of a life-threatening injury, and a case of a serial rapist/murderer in a small town. Sheriff Nevada heads up the investigation and Mary is brought in to assist. She and Nevada have a history and I am glad that while it was explored, it took the back burner to the crimes and mystery at hand.
I had my suspicions about who could be the perpetrator but Burton kept me on my toes and I was never quite sure. The scenes were just suspenseful and scary enough that I had to read them with the light on (and possibly check under my bed for red rope). I liked Macy as the main character and felt Nevada complemented her well. I thought both the characters and plot were well-developed. It makes me excited to see what comes next in this series.
Burton’s writing and story reminded me a lot of Lisa Gardner. I devoured Gardner’s books years ago so I am glad to have found another readable mystery author.

The two main characters have been involved in the past, both professionally and romantically, which allows the author to amp up the suspense without the reader feeling cheated on the romance. This is a new series, but there is overlapping of characters from Ms. Burton’s previous books.

I read this book in one sitting. The investigation was so intriguing and the killer so depraved that I just had to find out who the killer was. The climax had me on the edge of my seat. Macy and Nevada are a great couple who each understand what drives the other. Macy is extremely strong and resilient and yet vulnerable due to her physical changes since the accident. Nevada is strong, smart and the perfect man to support Macy. The sex scenes are not too explicit or long. All of the secondary characters are fully fleshed out and I will be looking forward to following them in future books, too.
I can highly recommend this book and I will be waiting anxiously for the next book in this series!

The story itself was interesting enough, but there's something about the writing style that irked me. Maybe book 2 will be better 🤞🏼

I hadn't read anything by Mary Burton in a while and I don't know why. This was a fast paced, suspenseful read with some romance. She is very good at creating a crime, mystery that holds the attention and keeps the reader guessing until the end. Be aware that the crimes in this book are rape and that may bother some people. This is the first book in what looks like is going to be a series and the main characters were interesting and likable. This book could be read as a stand alone and came to a conclusion, but I can't wait to read more and find out what happens with Macy, Nevada and the other characters she bring back for future novels. An excellent and recommended read!

Hide and Seek is the first book in the new
Criminal Profiler
series from popular romantic suspense author Mary Burton. This story features FBI agent Macy Crow, who was first introduced in the author’s last book, Cut and Run, where Macy was the victim of a serious hit and run accident she barely survived – but it’s not necessary to have read it in order to enjoy and understand this one.
When Hide and Seek opens, Macy has been working a desk job since being cleared to return to work some months after being discharged from hospital, and is keen to get back to work in the field. She’s applied to join the small but legendary team that tackles violent crime and is given a case file to review as part of her interview, that of a teenaged girl named Tobi Turner who went missing around fifteen years earlier. The previous week, the girl’s skeletal remains were found during a renovation project on an old barn in Deep Run in the Shenandoah Valley, and the local sheriff – a former FBI agent named Mike Nevada (with whom Macy had a brief fling before the accident) – requested the bureau’s assistance after DNA evidence suggested a link between Tobi’s death and the activities of an unknown serial rapist who’d been active around the same time.
The team leader isn’t offering any guarantees, but gives Macy an assignment – five days in Deep Run to find out everything she can about the case followed by a debrief in Quantico the following week – after which he’ll make a final decision about her application. It’s what Macy had hoped for – she’s good at her job and she’s ready to get back in the game; now she just needs to prove it.
Mike Nevada hadn’t intended to run for sheriff in his old home town, but after receiving an anonymous tip off about the fact that the incumbent had failed to submit a number of rape kits for testing, and a meeting with the man that left Nevada furious and frustrated, he’d immediately declared his intention to run for the post – and surprising even himself, had won. One of the first things he did after taking over as sheriff was to have those rape kits tested – and of the eight kits, three of them contain DNA that is a match to that found on the backpack belonging to Tobi Turner. But that DNA isn’t on file anywhere.
Once Macy arrives and starts her investigation, talking again to the families and friends of the missing girl and then widening her net to include the rapist’s surviving victims, she and Nevada start to unearth a web of connections stretching back years and into the heart of the local community. The earliest victims – one of whom was Nevada’s cousin – were raped but survived, although the extensive bruising to their necks showed an attempt at strangulation. But Tobi’s death was due to asphyxiation, indicating an escalation by the perpetrator. When a body is found dumped by the side of the road – raped, strangled, her hands bound with the red rope that has been found on or with other victims – it becomes clear that whoever is responsible never stopped committing these crimes, they just did them elsewhere – and now, with a new disappearance – a young woman who is similar in appearance to the rapist’s other victims – Macy and Nevada are racing against the clock to find her alive and catch a clever killer who has so far managed to keep himself completely off the radar.
Hide and Seek is a fast-paced mystery with a wonderfully twisty-turny plot that kept me guessing almost until the very end. There’s a fairly large secondary cast here, all of whom have important parts to play, and the two central characters are likeable and well-defined. This is more of a suspense novel with romantic elements, but the author creates a strong connection between Macy and Nevada, showing clearly that they like and respect each other and that the attraction that prompted their short-lived fling is still very much present. Macy is still struggling with pain in her damaged leg and not sleeping well; in addition she’s started to have strange dreams which have become more prevalent lately, but she pushes through it, unwilling to admit that perhaps she’s not taken enough time to properly heal, physically or mentally. Nevada offers quiet, unwavering support, even to the point that he doesn’t dismiss Macy’s concerns over the fact she’s started to dream that one of the victims is pleading for her help; I’m not sure if there author was trying to introduce some sort of paranormal twist here, but it was a bit awkward and didn’t really add anything to the story.
[I’ll issue a warning here and say that we get a number of scenes from the killer’s PoV which shed light on his twisted motivations, and put the reader in the room with him and his victims. The descriptions of his actions are not especially graphic, but may be difficult for some to read.]
I enjoyed the story although the suspense plot wraps up at something of a whirlwind pace, but there’s an HFN for Macy and Nevada, and I’m hoping that perhaps we’ll see them again in future novels in the series. If you’re a fan of this author, then Hide and Seek won’t disappoint, and if you’ve not read her before, this would be a good jumping in point.

Hide and Seek is a crime thriller. Macy is recovering from a terrible hit and run accident. She is determined to work with the profiling team. She is called to investigate a murder in a small town. Some sparks with an old flame. Macy is a strong determined woman. I liked her. The story is engaging, but I hated the sexual assault scenes. I might have just skipped this book if I had known about that. Fair warning to you. Overall, it's a good read mostly with lots of action and twists to keep you guessing until the end. After reading 3 books by Mary Burton, I feel quite confident in saying that they are thrilling, well-developed, but incapable to fully satisfy me...
Hide and Seek is probably the best example in this regard. Despite having zero time and soooo many other thoughts (considering the surreal times we are all living), I tried to dedicate any spare moment to read this book... I wanted to know, to understand who the murderer was and how he/she managed to kill his/her different victims, and I really enjoyed the twists and turn of events that Burton depicted.
However, in the end, I felt again that a huge part was missing. For the third time (with as many books), Burton seemed to choose the easy way out:
I mean, I would have appreciated one "hot scene" less and a bit more care devoted to developing the killer personality/psychology... the fact that this same script spoils each one of the three books I read so far by this Author, makes me fear that you and I, my dear Mrs Burton, are done.

Mary Burton hasn't let me down yet! Another gripping romantic suspense story - she is right up there with Karen Rose for this genre.
We met FBI profiler Special Agent Macy Crow in a previous novel Cut & Run (which was also excellent) and I really enjoyed this story set around her and Sheriff Mike Nevada in which they are investigating a crime going back over 10 years when the same sinister events start occurring again. Could it really be the same murderer...?
There is an abundance of characters which in turns leads to a lot of red herrings which helps keep the mind ticking trying to guess whodunnit. I read this book in 2 sittings and couldn't turn the pages quickly enough.
The lead characters have a romantic history that soon flares up again and I have always loved the romantic suspense genre - the best of both worlds for me!

Firstly I have not read this author, well I thought I hadn't but I have and this time around I was very pleased to say I really enjoyed this psycho killer, faced paced, twisty story.
I enjoyed the characters, and the romance was nice. What i did enjoy is the author can create a crime, and that it held my attention right until the end. It was very creepy, and I have to mention that the crimes, rape and such my bother some.
I look forward to the next instalment.

This was a great read. Interesting and good writing. I liked the Hero and the Heroine. There was little romance in the story (no "I love you" and dates and such) but it's very clear that both the Hero and the Heroine feel for each other and want to spend their future with each other. Both very professional while working the cases (no googley eyes, no shivers, no hot flushes and so on).

I have read several books by Mary Burton now and I must say for romantic suspense/thriller you can't get much better. Interesting characters and a good mystery story line with some tie-in to previous books, I would definitely recommend this author. I received e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review.

This is the first Mary Burton novel I have read and was pretty excited to start reading this newer series. Book #2 was just released this month so I thought I better start at the beginning, only to find out that really this isn't Agent Macy Crow's beginning. After a bit of digging I found out that Crow was introduced in Cut and Run. Do you need to read that one before reading Hide and Seek? No, I don't believe so. Burton gives us a brief background into what happened to Crow but only enough to get us interested in her back story. I was wondering if there was a story on her now I will have to go back further. Anyways Hide and Seek is set five month after a terrible accident that leaves Crow with pain and a limp. Crow is on a case to prove she is still capable of being the great Agent she once was, sent off to solve a cold missing persons case in a small town she spots links between this case and several rape/stalking cases.

And wins. When the body of Tobi Turner is discovered 15 yrs after she disappeared, Nevada manages to get Special Agent Macy Crow assigned to the case. Macy barely survived a hit-n-run accident in Texas on her last case, but she’s back to work and really wants on the team. This is her shot. She has a week to get solid evidence leading to a suspect, or better yet catch the guy, and then they’ll talk about her joining the team.
This story is wow. It doesn’t hit a reader over the head and drag them off. It whispers sweet words and romances the reader with great characters, a well-defined world, a creepy bad guy, and so much more. Before you know it, you’re in love and will follow this story to the ends of the Earth. I feel the ending was a touch rushed otherwise I love it. It reminds me of Criminal Minds, a show I love, so if you enjoy those types of shows then this book is right up your dark alley. I am most definitely looking forward to more books in this series.

I was so happy when I saw that Macy Crow was getting her own book and the bonus is its also the first book of a new series.
We met FBI agent Macy Crow in Cut and Run where she was left recovering from hit and run that left her body broken. After working hard in physical therapy to get her body back into working order she gets a call Jerrod Ramsey who has an opening on his elite FBI profiling team. Her audition for the role is being sent to Deep Run, Virginia after a set bones is found of a girl that went missing 15 years ago and evidence ties her to a serial rapist who active 14 years ago.
Going to Deep Run reunites her with former FBI agent Mike Nevada who is now Sheriff of the small town. The two had a short no strings affair on a previous case but Macy's being commitment phob and intense psychical therapy she knew she would need after the hit and run she dropped all contact.
The serial rapist who graduated to serial killer is also front and center in the story. The author does a great job of keeping his identity a secret right up until the end. Lots of surprising twist throughout the story along with an engaging story from beginning to end.

Another great mystery by Mary Burton and they get better all the time. A rapist/murderer who had been at it for more than ten years, and Macy had been sent from Quantico to solve the case and was given only 5 days to do it, all the while still healing from a hit and run that almost killed her the year before. She would be working with an old lover of her's, Mike Nevada, and they would fall in love this time around.
I’m so glad the description of what was being done to these girls wasn’t too descriptive, except for the strangling then bringing them back again and again. He was an evil bastard.
There was sex in this, but it wasn’t too graphic and the F-bomb was used only 4 times.
As to the narration: Hmmm… it was good overall, but Nevada’s voice was used without any emotions whatsoever. He sounded very bored all the time. I didn’t like is voice at all.

This such a nice and quick book, the pace was perfect and the clues we're given at the perfect time so naturally i have enjoyed every moment of it.
The characters were good, not over bearing and you can easily connect with them.
Guess i will be continuing with this series soon ^^
