Alone for so long, the last man alive is about to have one final visitor…

Isaac lived on after others passed. He survived humanity’s demise and is now prepared for the ultimate journey. He isn’t surprised to see Death approach, nor the prospect of what is to come from their meeting. The conversation that follows prepares them both for one final adventure into the unknown.

'His Last Companion' is a thought-provoking introspection of the human experience and the intimacy between the last man on earth and the one companion who has been by his side since birth, Death.

"His Last Companion is a compelling short story that touches on some of our toughest questions about life and death. Sophia Conway has crafted a deep tale in few words that will sit with the reader’s psyche long after finishing. I listened to this on Audible - On the brink of world annihilation the last man on earth gets a visit from Death. They have a conversation before Death takes him to the next life. This is an intriguing and thought provoking listen. The narrator, I thought, brought it to life as well.

📱His Last Companion by Sophia Conway
Pub Date: 24th May 2016
Genre: Novella

"His Last Companion" presents a unique concept of writing that I haven't encountered before. To be honest, I found it a bit boring in the first few pages, but then the plot turns out to be intriguing enough for me to continue reading.

The narrative revolves around a conversation between Death and a person named Isaac, who is left alone after his fellow people die away, making him the last person alive, due to a prolonged war. He endures the scorching day heat and the chilling numbness of the night, along with the challenges of scarcity of food and dehydration 🏜️

It's unclear to whom the book's title refers—is it Isaac or Death? Throughout the conversation, Isaac reflects on his last companion, a lady who was with him when everyone else faded away from Earth, and whom he deeply misses 💔

Despite the loneliness and numerous hardships, Isaac panics at the meeting with Death, eventually embraces Death as he realizes he cannot outrun Death.

This book really makes me pause and question about life and death, which I never have pondered about 💭

Death is really not the final destination; it's just a doorway to another world. It's not the end but a stopping of a life.

"Life shouldn't be something you wade through in the half-light but a celebration! It was meant as a wild and soul-stretching journey, but you humans have taken it and packed it neatly into little grey boxes to be labeled and categorized."
Our life should be merry to accept Death as part of it. Not being so organized, busy, and serious all the time to forget about the day when Death is coming to us.

At some point, this recalls me to the Midnight Library where Isaac said this, "I just want it all to end, to fall asleep and never be woken. This life isn't for me."

In conclusion, I enjoyed this novella in an intrigued manner, appreciating the ideas explored in the plot surrounding 'Life, Death, and In-Between' 🩶

Special thanks to author Sophia Conway for bringing forth this rare novella and providing me the opportunity to read it in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to @goodreads, where authors and reviews connect ✨️

I read the audio version of this book. And I mean, I READ the audio version; narrated it - "did" it. And why? when deciding to narrate books for a living can mean sniffing at 28 pages? The pay strains to cover dinner-for-two at most restaurants...

Well, not only are there THREE interpretations of the title (which always invites a mental revisit of the story), but Sophia Conway's His Last Companion is an engaging look through almost theater-like dialogue at a delicate topic - death. It's done quickly as a novella but it doesn't feel like it skips through or minimizes any concepts of grief. Importantly, and what helps to set it apart, is that the tale touches on feelings that we're more comfortable with and forget are connected to death. Death himself is there to remind us that while loneliness is a sour reality, Life, choices, and death can all be noble.

Despite its brevity and topic, we're not quite sure how this will resolve for earth's last human, Isaac, and I appreciated that. Death is nothing to fear. This is a gentle and thought-provoking piece, sympathetic to the human condition that should be read (or listened to!) by many.

Sophia Conway brings us a really interesting thought-provoking story about the last man on Earth with His Last Companion! Having survived the downfall of humanity, Isaac has been all alone. That is, until Death arrives and they take one last journey together. Conway immediately drew me in with the many mysteries of this tale, like who is Isaac and what happened to humanity. But His Last Companion truly shines in the interaction between Death and Isaac, and the way it makes you think differently about death and the end of things! This is a quick read, but it certainly leaves you thinking about it long after finishing. If you love interesting philosophical books or are looking for a different flavor of post apocalyptic fiction, definitely come take a stroll with the reaper in His Last Companion!

‘His Last Companion’ is a short story from Irish author Sophia Conway about the last human alive having a conversation with Death. In this world, a manmade apocalypse occurred and the survivors fought among themselves rather than rebuild the world until there was just one left who spent a life of loneliness into old age.

It’s a beautifully written story that is not too short or too long with a theme that leaves the reader wondering ‘what is most important in our lives’ after reading it. I hope that Sophia Conway continues to write more short stories and compile them into an anthology. She has a unique writing voice that more people should experience.

Haunting but hopeful

A thought provoking story, that caused me to ponder my own life. It left me hoping for a continuation of the story, to see if the glimpse of hope was indeed his path. Glad I came across this little treasure.
