My problem is less with writer’s block than it is with writer’s hemorrhage. I have too many projects I want to work on, and not enough time to complete them. I suppose if I didn’t have a day job, I might actually get writer’s block. But since writing brings me such great pleasure, I never spend the time I set aside for it wondering what to write about. I just get to work.(less)

I had been toying around with an idea for a book about the historical memory of communism in Eastern Europe for a while, but the smell of burning human flesh spurred me to put fingers to keyboard. Bulgaria has been a political mess since the first fall of the government in February 2013. I watch with trepidation the rise of xenophobic, rightwing parties across Europe, especially in Eastern Europe where the demonization of the communist past serves as an excuse for the exoneration of Nazis and fascists. As I say in the preface, I wrote The Left Side of History “by mistake.”(less)
