Red Fox

Along the Appalachian Trail, you can encounter many types of animals and birds. While smaller animals are more commonplace, clever foxes usually remain out of sight. It’s not that they aren’t curious; it’s that they’re cautious. Appalachian foxes have grown wary of humans. You still may surprise a fox in the wild, but they’ll seem more afraid of you than you are of them.

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a mammal of the order Carnivora. It is the largest and most well-known species of fox. Red foxes has the widest distribution of any canid. They are found throughout much of the northern hemisphere from the Arctic circle to Central America, the steppes of central Asia, and northern Africa.

The Red Fox (vulpes vulpes) can be seen in many varying habitats, from northern forests, to grassy prairies, to city suburbs and urban areas. So keep your eyes out for one of these beautiful creatures in your neighborhood!
