The Abbassid Caliphate ruled from Baghdad and was considered the Islamic Golden Age, from 750 to 1258, fostering great cultural and scientific growth.

The original core of Baghdad's city is the round city of Baghdad, constructed in ancient times by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mansur in AD 762–766.

The Abbasid armies consisted of Iraqi and other Arabs garrisoned in the Eastern provinces, as well as Persian warriors and other non-Arab Muslims, who opposed Umayyad rule, and sought a more egalitarian society. Most prominent among these warriors were the "Abna" or "Sons", they were described as looking like Eastern Christian monks, due to their long beard and hair as well as their use of brown woolen cloaks.
