Battalions are a mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Overview[]
Fire Emblem: Three Houses[]
Battalions take the form of squads of units that can be deployed alongside characters and will assist them in battle. Different battalions can be equipped to a character depending on their rank of Authority, and the strength of battalions is based on a character's Charm stat. Additionally, battalions have movement types—infantry, armored, cavalry, and flying—like units that limit which battalions they may equip; infantry, armored, and cavalry units may equip all battalions, but flying units are limited to flying battalions.
Each battalion provides their own Gambit and boosts stats of the unit they are equipped to, with different battalions boosting (or occasionally penalizing) different combinations of (physical and/or magical) attack, defense, hit rate, critical rate, and avoid. Many battalions are hired from the Battalion Guild, while others are obtained as rewards from completing paralogues, requiring that a particular character be recruited. Battalions tied to paralogues generally reference a character's homeland and are usually equipped by the required character when encountered as an enemy. Others are acquired instead as rewards from completing quests; these battalions tend to not be aligned with any particular place and cannot be hired from the battalion guild.
Battalions have an endurance stat, similar to HP, which increments from 0 to some number, 30 at the lowest. Each battalion has a unique maximum endurance which does not increase by level, unlike the other stats. As a character takes damage, their equipped battalion takes half the damage (rounded down in case of decimals) from their endurance; when a battalion's endurance hits 0, effects from the battalion will disappear and Gambits cannot be used. Unlike HP, battalion endurance does not refresh once a battle is done, requiring instead to be replenished at the battalion guild; unlike units, battalions reduced to 0 endurance are not permanently lost, and their endurance can be replenished like any other battalion.
Battalions have their own experience system, with battalions gaining experience as their Gambits are used. Once enough experience is earned, battalions can level up, improving their stat boosts and reducing any stat penalties. Each battalion can be leveled up to level 5 in this way. Unlike with characters, the stat increases gained by battalions at each level are fixed.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes[]
In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Battalions take on a different role. When equipped with a Battalion, a character will receive extra protection against damage from either a specific weapon type, Special Unit Archetypes, or monsters for as long as the the Battalion has endurance, as well as grant advantage against enemies with those weapon types, allowing players to influence the game's Weapon Triangle. They do not serve any additional function, as Gambits are not part of the gameplay, and as such, fliers are not restricted to flying battalions.
Battalion endurance varies by battalion, with higher-ranking battalions generally having larger amounts of endurance. Upgrades from the Base Camp's Facility Manager can boost a Battalion's default endurance stat. Endurance is restored automatically between battles and does not require the player to heal them at the Battalion Guild with gold.
Due to the Charm stat no longer being applicable to gambits, it instead reduces the endurance loss when a unit takes damage.
Certain Battalions are won by either doing a first time clear and/or S-rank Clear of Paralogues. They can also be found as survey rewards of various regions on the War Map. Select battalions are also awarded to the player by the Reward Master in the Base Camp for reaching specific achievement milestones.
