Missions menu.

It's mission time, kupo! Report to Classroom Zero on the double, kupo!

Mog

Missions (作戦, Sakusen? or ミッション, Misshon?) are quests in Final Fantasy Type-0 that provide the core gameplay which the story is structured around. Missions generally consist of a sequence of battles as Class Zero reaches their goal. At the start the cadets are given an option to accept support.

Story[]

As a group of cadets who were instrumental in liberating Akademeia, Class Zero is sent out during military campaigns to further assist the armies of Rubrum in reclaiming territory.

Overview[]

A true warrior knows success on a mission is about more than trouncing your enemy, kupo. Review your mission orders and memorize your objectives before you march, kupo.

Class Second Moogle

There are four types of missions:

  • Main storyline missions: Played during the advancement of the plot.
  • RTS missions (Real Time Strategy): Battles on the overworld to claim territory for the Dominion of Rubrum.
  • Expert Trials: Optional missions taken during free time at Akademeia if there are more than 12 hours remaining. The mission levels are usually higher than the player's current level when they are first available, encouraging players to attempt them after completing the game for the first time.
  • Code Crimson missions: Storyline missions unlocked in the second playthrough. When playing through the main story, these missions can be substituted for the last mission of each chapter.

Before a mission, the player chooses their active and reserve party members. Everyone starts fully healed, regardless of their prior status. Some members glow yellow in the party select screen to indicate prime candidates, and if used for the mission, these cadets gain a permanent Primed status, which functions the same as the Aura and Trance statuses, and also halves the damage they take. Prime members are chosen randomly, so the player can exit and reenter the menu to change them.

The player gets an option to accept Support Personnel before the mission starts. In the PlayStation Portable (PSP) version, this meant multiplayer with other players joining in on the player's mission. In the HD remake, Support Personnel are AI-controlled "shadow" versions of the Class Zero cadets named after the personnel who helped develop the game. Kurasame Susaya is an exception; in the PSP version he joined as support if there were no other players who could join, but he joins randomly in the HD version. He is not a "shadow" like the other Support Personnel. If Kurasame cannot be deployed, he sends in his Tonberry instead. Allowing Support Personnel earns SPP, points that can be used to purchase items at the SPP Post in Akademeia.

Special orders (SO) are optional objectives the party can aim for during missions. They are allowed by talking to a man at the Sorcery Division quarters of Akademeia. When a special order is active, a letter icon appears on the top left corner of the screen, and pressing the touchpad button on the PlayStation 4 gives the option to take the special order. Completing special orders earns additional rewards. The orders are various and can range from killing a specific number enemies with a Killsight within a time limit, to collecting items from surrendering troops.

Failing an SO causes a portal to appear under the leader, causing death when contact is made. With timing, these portals can be dodged, and must be dodged three times in succession to move on. Evading the death penalty for failing an SO rewards the trophy Above the Law. Leaving an area cancels an SO, while maintaining buffs granted, and can also be used to avoid death. Eidolons are unaffected by the portals.

The player is graded on the time they took to complete the mission, how much phantoma they harvested, and how many casualties they had. In RTS missions, the phantoma requirement is replaced with completed Objectives. The highest rank for each category is A, and the lowest D. Getting three A's grants an S rank, which offers various rewards that can be earned repeatedly. Performing various feats can give special bounties.

Generally, having zero casualties is required for an A grade, with some exceptions. One is mandatory in Operation MA Demolition, while Dominating the Dragon's Nest allows up to three, 24 are mandatory in Invasion of the Rursus if only one cadet is active in the Spiral of Death, and Vanquishing the Nox Suzaku allows up to five.

Three different mission bonuses can be earned, depending on a mission's cadet maximum and how many cadets were deployed, including reserves. "A Select Few" (around 2-6 deployed characters) has no effect, "A Lonely Battle" (around 1-2 deployed characters) increases the sum of the combined ranks by one, and "Army of One" (1 deployed character) increases them by two. For example, earning Army of One with a final score of ACA or BAB will add up to three A's, thus granting an S rank. These bonuses don't apply to Finis difficulty.

Missions can be aborted to be returned to Akademeia with all the EXP earned intact. If the player loses the mission they get a Game Over and have to restart from the last save.

The battle against the superboss Nox Suzaku starts with a mission briefing, but this "mission" doesn't appear on the Missions list.

List of missions[]

Missions can be replayed from the Missions menu on the title screen after they are completed in the main game. The first and last missions are excluded from the list, due to their storyline restrictions.

In the PSP release, the Missions menu is available on disc 2, while the first and last missions are played on disc 1. In the HD release, RTS missions are no longer mandatory and can be replayed, while difficulty levels are added into the main game and can be adjusted throughout.

There are four(three in PSP) levels of difficulty which affect mission rewards. When replaying a mission, the difficulty cannot be changed.

  • Cadet (Novice): The same mission level as Officer, but enemies have less HP, deal less damage, and give less EXP. Spells also cost half as much MP to use. This difficulty was added to the HD version due to player feedback regarding the PSP release.
  • Officer (Intermediate): The standard difficulty which the other three difficulties and the user interface refer to.
  • Agito (Advanced): Enemy levels are raised by 30.
  • Finis (Expert): Enemy levels are raised by 50, enemies are in constant Rage status (if applicable), and any missions (sans the first and last) must be completed with one party member.

Musical themes[]

"Raise the Vermilion Banner" (朱雀の旗が立つとき, Suzaku no Hata ga Tatsu Toki?) plays during the preparations phase and is the theme music for the Missions menu on the title screen.

"The Heart Boils" (滾る心, Tagiru Kokoro?, lit. Seething Heart) plays on Mission Day in Akademeia when all of free time is used, indicating that the next mission is about to start.
