The Death Eye, also known as the PHANTOM, is an enemy from Final Fantasy. It is a fixed encounter the party must face before they can access the lower levels of the Chaos Shrine. It can also appear as a random encounter on the final floor of the Chaos Shrine in version where encounters are enabled on that floor.

Stats[]

  1. Resists prior to pixel remaster.

Battle[]

Due to its low HP, the Death Eye is typically not a threat. However, it can break resistances via Dispel, then follow up with several status and instant death attacks. Using Diaga or Firaga is recommended to dispose of it quickly.

Behind the scenes[]

PHANTOM from FFI Famicom sprite

PHANTOM's original Famicom sprite.

Much like the EYE, in the game's original Japanese release the PHANTOM, then named デスビホルダー (Desubehorudā?, lit. Death Beholder), so resembled the Beholders from Dungeons & Dragons that Nintendo redesigned the shared sprite between the two monsters before bringing the game to the US.

Etymology[]

A phantom is a ghost, a physical manifestation of the soul or spirit of a deceased person.
