Wyrm tyrant who soars on wings of night.

Description

Bahamut is a non-elemental Rank III Flying Esper in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. It is first summoned by the Judge of Wings in the Underfane of Yaxin Qul, after the battle with Belias. Bahamut ascends into the heavens and casts his spear down into the Muruc Cahuac Skysea, breaking it into a chain of islands.

The party escapes on the Galbana, only to crash land on Tswarra, Isle of the Lost. During the final battle with Feolthanos Exultant, Bahamut is summoned after Feolthanos Medi loses a substantial amount of health.

Bahamut is obtained as a summon in Mission 79: Wings of Midnight. The party must fight a gauntlet of Rank III Espers, including Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, and Titan, before Bahamut appears.

Obtained[]

Bahamut can be bought from the Ring of Pacts for 1 Auracite.

Gameplay[]

Summoning Bahamut costs 25 Affinity. Bahamut has the most tremendous Strength and Attack power growth to make up for his slow attacks. His Attack Speed is 20–28, exactly 3.5 seconds to 2.95 seconds (simplified calculation). He is slightly weaker compared to Chaos in terms of Magick. He has the lowest Speed among all Rank III Flying Espers, and even slightly slower Attack Speed than Exodus, by 2 points.

Bahamut's basic attack, Bahamut Claw, deals damage to all foes in range in front of him. Bahamut's Megaflare inflicts Disable and deals heavy damage to all foes in range, with 30 seconds of charge time, which becomes approximately 23 seconds if Bahamut is augmented with Haste.

Bahamut has the strongest Strength and Attack stats among all of the Flying Espers. His Bahamut Claw attack deals damage to all foes in range, perfect for attacking any type of enemies. Bahamut's Megaflare is useful, as it deals heavy damage and also inflicts Disable to all foes in range, and thus will likely cripple the enemy.

Bahamut has great and balanced stats, with Speed being his weakest asset. His Megaflare attack may be useful, but it takes a long time to recharge. Since Bahamut is susceptible to Slow and Sleep, he becomes even slower if afflicted with both. Since his movement speed is slow, he can be weak against Ranged units.

Etymology[]

Bahamut (Arabic بهموت Bahamūt) originated as an enormous whale in ancient pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. Upon Bahamut's back stands a bull with four thousand eyes, ears, noses, mouths, tongues and feet called Kujuta (also spelled "Kuyutha") (compared with the pair of Behemoth and Leviathan). Between each of these is a distance of a 500-year journey. On the back of Kujuta is a mountain of ruby. Atop this mountain is an angel who carries six hells, earth, and seven heavens on its shoulders.

Another version of the Arabic story is that Bahamut is indeed a dragon and he stands on a whale called Liwash.

In modern times, the game Dungeons & Dragons is responsible for reimagining Bahamut as the king of dragons, a benevolent Platinum Dragon; the opposite of the malevolent Tiamat, the five-headed Chromatic Queen of Dragons.
