LACOMBE 1 A complete overhaul of a renovation and addition, we nearly doubled the size of what was a basic raised bungalow, taking the home from a box to providing articulation, detail and personality. The interior was completely reworked to function for a large, modern family while the exterior pulls inspiration from European farmhouses.

The homeowner, who recently bought this 1970s two-story, in New Paltz, New York, never liked the look a raised ranches. But the house's lofty space and open layout were too tempting to pass up. So we asked architect Jeff DeGraw of nearby Middletown to reimagine its facade. "Adding too many historical references to a house like this would just look foolish," says DeGraw. But some traditional elements wouldn't feel out of place, he adds, such as cedar shingles in place of the dated composite…

This home was transformed from a split-foyer into a french colonial. What made this transformation was raising the entrance to the main level, building out the attic space for an added level, and relocating the staircase to access all 3 levels. A master suite addition was added above the garage and a dramatic window wall addition to the rear of the home really brings the outdoors in.
