Senator Joseph McCarthy announced during a a speech that he had a list of over 200 names of members of the U.S. state Department who were known communist. There was really no proof and he went on a man hunt and accused unjustly many prominent people. Senator McCarthy was thrown into the spotlight and many Americans suffered damaging accusations and destroyed reputations because people blindly believed his words were true. He even accused people of being guilty by association.
