The spinal cord is composed of 31 pairs of spinal nerves and is divided into cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral regions. There are two areas with a thicker cord: the cervical enlargement in the inferior cervical area, (which gives rise to upper limb nerves), and the  lumbar enlargement (which yields pelvic and lower limb nerves). Inferior to this, the cord tapers to a point called the medullary cone. From this, a bundle of nerve roots emerges called the caudal equina from L2 to S5.
