Etymology

From Middle English yvyned (past participle of vynyen, *vinewen, *fenowen (to be mouldy)), from Old English ġefinegod, *ġefynegod, past participle of Old English fynegian (to become mouldy), from fyniġ (mouldy, musty), equivalent to finew +‎ -ed. Doublet of fenowed. Related to Old English fyne (moisture, mold, mildew). More at finew.
