[edit]Possibly a reduced form of earlier *piccitto, probably from Vulgar Latin pittitus (“small, worthless”). Related to piccolo and piccino (“little, small”), and a doublet of zito. Compare Piedmontese cit (“small; boy, kid”), Ligurian citto (“cent; centimeter”).
