Zarya of the Dawn is a comic book written by Kris Kashtanova and illustrated using Midjourney. It is notable for being illustrated entirely using artificial intelligence, and for the copyright dispute resulting from this fact.

Plot

The comic book is about Zarya, a non-binary person travelling through different worlds in order to find mental health tools necessary to handle their emotions and to forge connections with other characters.

In September of 2022, Kashtanova applied for the comic's copyright protection with the United States Copyright Office, but did not disclose that the illustrations were created using Midjourney, an artificial intelligence image generator. The comic was granted copyright protection, but the Copyright Office reversed their decision in February of 2023 after discovering the fact. The Copyright Office explained that only human-created works can receive copyright protection, citing works created by animals as an example of ineligible works. Although the images are not protected by copyright, the arrangement of the images and the text and story of the book are, as they are the creative work of Kashtanova.[1][2][3][4]
