County Wicklow images

I see you have been adding some images recently of places I should have taken photos of years ago when I lived in West Wicklow and passed many of these places on numerous occasions. However, that was in the pre-digital age. I started a draft for Brusselstown Ring and wonder if you have any images of it. If you have any please let me know and also if you have any source of information I would appreciate that too. Otherwise I shall have to climb up there myself when I next visit. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 08:58, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually one of the members of the group that is running Ireland's first year of Wiki Loves Monuments. As I can't help but keep an eye on the number of photos being uploaded (Commons page), I have been adding them to the relevant list and article pages as they appear. So someone might supply you with an image yet! I would be happy to help in any way I can with writing up articles though. Being a doctoral student, I have access to journals and articles that might be of help for some of the less well known sites. I'm hoping to do something very similar with the National Monuments in Carlow that don't have articles either.Smirkybec (talk) 17:25, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are also a number of historical Wicklow images. The Detroit Photographic Co. photochroms tend to be very easy restorations, and the rest of it looks pretty reasonable on a glance, so let me know if you want any of them cleaned up. Note that there's a couple more images on the second page, after the random American plantation with the same name. Adam Cuerden (talk) 17:31, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for the info. Unfortunately I will not be in Ireland for the 2014 Wiki Loves Monuments event though I did take and upload a few here in France and hope to contribute some more this month again. However, as I don't know the locations and country roads here very well, as I do for Ireland, it is more difficult to find the locations and the right time of day for the best photos. Good luck and I will ask you later if you can look up some source for me. Thanks. ww2censor (talk) 17:14, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed several of the Irish images have very poor or even menaingless names that give no indication of the subject, so I have moved some but don't have much time to devote to this. Also many have no Irish location related categories. Some images have been so overprocessed, or appear to have skies impposed, that in my opinion as a photographer for 25+ years, they look entirely fake, such as File:Seefin entrance-HDR.jpg in comparison to File:Seefin entrance.jpg. Good luck. ww2censor (talk) 18:57, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, many of the people entering are entirely new users, so we can't expect them to be able to add all the extra data that more experienced uploaders would. All of them have GPS locations on them, so whilst I'm not saying there won't be work to do with them later on, I would say that some images of the monuments (whatever you may think of them) is better than none at all. As to their merit, well, our panel of 5 judges will have the say on that! Smirkybec (talk) 22:14, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, many contributors may well be nubies but I suspect there is a page where you provide some guidance, such as naming criteria and descriptions. Anyway, I will add info or move images where I can determine easily what and where they are. Good luck with the event. ww2censor (talk) 14:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well the upload wizard goes through all those steps, if people don't or can't follow them, there is very little we can do! There are a few of us that are very familiar with the lists of monuments so there is a plan to work on them afterwards (along with a lot of other plans!). Smirkybec (talk) 17:46, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Jane Stephens, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Clontarf. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Maude Delap

I thought I'd let you know that I nominated an article you created recently, Maude Delap, to appear in the main page in the Did you know? section. (See Template:Did you know nominations/Maude Delap.) If you create or significantly expand any more articles that meet the criteria for DYK, I encourage you to submit them yourself! Cheers, —innotata 20:53, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How wonderful! Thanks very much - she is a fascinating woman :) Smirkybec (talk) 21:07, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

William McBride

What I'd suggest is that you encourage them to work on the article through one of our draft processes (user sandbox, draftspace or WP:AFC) instead of trying to post an incomplete work in progress right in articlespace. It's certainly possible that he might qualify for a Wikipedia article, if a real claim of notability can be made and reliably sourced — but if an article doesn't already have at least those two things in it right up front, then it's not necessarily entitled to be given the benefit of the doubt. From what I can tell, further, it seems to be a collaboration among multiple editors — so draftspace might actually be the way to go. I'd actually be happy to restore the page to a draftspace version — it'll be at Draft:William McBride ("private" isn't part of his name, but was his military rank, so it would need to be included in the title differently than that.) That way they can work on getting it up to snuff without having to worry about it getting deleted again in the meantime. Bearcat (talk) 04:55, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

They have done that now, and I hope they will work on it more before they re-publish. The reason I wanted to chat to you about it is that, as new editors they didn't fully understand what was happening or how they were going wrong. As brand new editors they just need a bit of guidance, which having someone explain the issues in a more "human" manner might help them a lot. I understand the issue with the name, it's to delineate him from other William McBrides, so they have half way there to understanding the conventions around naming an article. I know you deleted their work fairly early on, but I just wanted to let you know what was going on. Another editor is working with them now, so if you are interested in the topic, I'm sure they would appreciate your input! Smirkybec (talk) 08:24, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Test Kaffeeklatsch area for women-only

Since WikiProject Women as proposed at the IdeaLab may take some time to realize, and based on a discussion on the proposal's talk page, I have started a test Kaffeeklatsch area for women (cis, lesbian, transgender) only. If interested, your participation would be most welcome. Lightbreather (talk) 19:34, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Will do :) Smirkybec (talk) 20:36, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: The MfD for the Kaffeeklatsch was closed with the result page kept,[1] and this notice[2] re the WMF non discrimination policy was put on my page by Harej. (In a nutshell, the klatsch does not violate the policy.)

I don't know how the proposed WikiProject Women at the IdeaLab will fare, but one step at a time, I guess. Lightbreather (talk) 01:21, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alice Perry

See, somebody notices your Facebook posts! Philafrenzy (talk) 23:34, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed! Now I have to figure out which one you are :P You might also be interested in the bit of work on Aleen Cust I did this evening :) Smirkybec (talk) 23:42, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I will take a look. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:47, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Why not nominate them both at Template talk:Did you know. They appear to meet the criteria and would then appear eventually on the main page of Wikipedia. Each would get 5-10,000 views as a result. You don't have to review someone else's nomination for DYK for your first 5 DYK nominations. Check out Mary Brodrick which appeared under the teaser ("hook") "Did you know that when Mary Brodrick applied to study Egyptology at the Sorbonne in Paris, she was told, "But we do not take little girls here"?" Philafrenzy (talk) 23:54, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I will! I was delighted to get Maude Delap one, so I will submit these two, thanks very much for the encouragement! Smirkybec (talk) 23:57, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A strong hook and a picture are the key in my experience. It's not so different to writing a headline for the newspapers really. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:01, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
