- NASA delays the launch of STS-114, Space Shuttle Discovery, due to faulty fuel-tank sensors. The launch would have been NASA's first manned mission since the loss of Columbia in 2003.
- In Kyrgyzstan, acting President Kurmanbek Bakiyev scores a landslide victory in the Kyrgyz presidential election.
- World leaders at the 31st G8 summit, held in Gleneagles, Scotland, pledge US$50 billion in aid to developing countries by 2010, half to Africa.
- Prince Albert II formally assumes the throne in the Principality of Monaco following a three-month mourning period for his father, Prince Rainier III.
