- A series of terrorist attacks in London kills at least 50 people and injures hundreds more. The attacks come during the 31st G8 summit, being held in the UK, and less than a day after London's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics is successful.
- The European Parliament rejects the proposed directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions by a 648-14 vote, ending four years of intense debate.
