Compare with Risk (game) and change accordingly

Europe Engulfed is a commercial block wargame published in 2003 by GMT Games. It was designed by Rick Young and Jesse Adams, and developed by William Cooper. Europe Engulfed is a turn based game for two to three players, who take a side in the World War II playing as either the Axis or the Allies, the latter being split into UK/US and USSR in the case of three people playing. The game is played on a large map board which depicts the European Theatre of World War II, including North Africa, the littoral Middle East and the United States. Players control wooden blocks which depict corps, divisions and fleets with which they attempt to seize territory from their enemies in order to win the game. The Allies must defeat Nazi Germany in as short a time as possible in order to win, while the Axis must successfully invade either Britain or the USSR in order to claim victory. Europe Engulfed is a complex game which combines standard board game features such as movement and combat with political rules reflecting the dilemmas and limitations facing World War II leaders, and can take up to 14 hours for an experienced pair of players to complete.

Basic Details

[edit]

The game is played on a 44" (1.1m) x 34" (0.8m) map board which depicts the European Theatre, including North Africa, the littoral Middle East and the USA.[1] Military units are depicted by coloured wooden blocks decorated with stickers, the colour representing Axis or Allies and stickers detailing the specifics of each unit, for example armour or infantry. There are 283 booden blocks in a full campaign game, depicting unit sizes of corps, division and fleets.[1] Europe Engulfed can be mated with fellow GMT Game Asia Engulfed to simulate World War II in its entirety, although such a game would not be playable in one day given the average play time of Europe Engulfed alone being 10-14 hours.[2]

Gameplay

[edit]

A full game of Europe Engulfed encompasses the whole of World War Two from September 1939 to the end of 1945, although there are a number of scenarios which can be played if less time is available. The game is played through in turns, each of which represents two months of the war and during which production and combat take place.[3]

The game is set up in such a way as to present players with the same problems which faced the wartime leaders, meaning that countries must decide what to produce and how many resources to allot to various projects. For example, playing as Nazi Germany will force the player to choose between bolstering the Luftwaffe or building more U-Boats, while Allied players must decide whether to use British and American production to aid Russia on the Eastern Front war or to build up an invasion force in Britain or North Africa.[4]

The map is split in to areas, and these are the basic movement unit for the game: infantry can move one area per turn, armour two.[4].
