Monilophyte refers to the monophyletic group of ferns, defined in a broad sense, which is sister group to the Spermatophytes within the Subdivision Euphyllophytes, within the Division Tracheophytes, by a consensus of recent molecular studies[1]. There are four classes within this rank, Psilotopsida (which includes the Ophioglossales), Equisetopsida, Marattiopsida, and Polypodiopsida, with the Polypodiopsida containing the leptosporangiate ferns. The Euphyllophytes are sister to the Lycophytes
