The opening paragraph (or lead section) should concisely convey:

  1. The formal title of the unit, its abbreviation and nickname(s) (if applicable).
  2. The unit's country or allegiance.
  3. If applicable, what service is/was the unit part of (e.g. Air Force, Army, Navy)
  4. When was it formed?
  5. If the unit no longer exists, when was it disbanded/deactivated?
  6. Notable battles/operations/wars.

The article can be structured along these lines:

  1. The unit's history: Why was it formed? Who formed it? Where has the unit served in peacetime and war? What happened?
  2. If the unit still exists, where is it now? What higher formation is the unit assigned to, if any? What is its current role (e.g., Armoured, Marines)?
  3. A unit's traditions
  4. If applicable, mention gallantry medals awarded to individuals (e.g., the Medal of Honor, Param Vir Chakra, and Victoria Cross).
  5. If applicable, mention unit awards (e.g., battle honours, presidential citations).

If the article is lengthy, it can be divided into sections, structured along lines set out in the preceding guideline.
