Power Up is the upcoming seventeenth studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC. It is the band's upcoming sixteenth internationally released studio album and the seventeenth in Australia. The album marks the return of Brian Johnson and Phil Rudd, who both left the band prior to, and during the Rock or Bust tour as the result of hearing loss and legal issues respectively.[2][3][4] Cliff Williams, who retired from the band in 2016, returned as well, after being pictured with the band in a Canadian recording studio, and ultimately confirmed in the band's website and promotional material for the album.[5][6][7] This will also be AC/DC's first album since the death of their original guitarist Malcolm Young in 2017.

History

Following the 2014 album Rock or Bust, the group embarked on the Rock or Bust tour. Prior to the tour, drummer Phil Rudd was charged with attempting to procure murder, threatening to kill, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of cannabis. For the tour, he was replaced by Chris Slade, formally of Manfred Mann's Earth Band, the Firm, and who had also previously played with AC/DC on the 1990 album The Razors Edge following Rudd's first leave of absence. Mentions of Rudd were also scrubbed from the band's website as well.[8]

While on tour, lead singer Brian Johnson began to suffer hearing loss, which he attributed not to 36 years of touring, but to his love of racecars.[9][10] This caused the final ten dates of the Rock or Bust tour to be rescheduled. Ultimately, he was replaced with Guns N' Roses vocalist Axl Rose for the remaining dates.[8][11]

Rumors began to swirl that the band was working on its seventeenth studio album with Brian Johnson, Phil Rudd, and Cliff Williams back in the band. All were pictured at a recording studio in Canada, suggesting the album was being recorded there, much like how their last album Rock or Bust was also recorded there.[5][6][7]

On 1 October, 2020 AC/DC released the first teaser to PWRUP; a snippet of their new song "Shot in the Dark", which showcased the riff and partial chorus for 25 seconds before being abruptly cut off with a record stopping sound effect.[12]

On 5 October, 2020, AC/DC released the second teaser of “Shot in the Dark”, also confirming in the same teaser that the entire song would be released on 7 October 2020.

PWR/UP will be released on 13 November 2020.[1]

Title

The band's website has several references with the name PWRUP,[8] hinting at that being the album's title. On 29 September 2020, Ultimate Classic Rock also hinted at it being the album's title, especially after a poster was spotted in front of Angus Young's old school with the name.[13]

In early October 2020, the band's official website published a few photographs of several different posters displayed in different cities (from different countries) – such as Ashfield (in front of Angus Young's Ashfield Boys High School), Lille, London and Dallas – featuring the writing "PWR/UP" (stylized as PWRϟUP), leading to another speculation that it would be the title of the new album.

Singles

"Shot in the Dark", the first single from the album, was partially released as an audio/video teaser[14] It was released on on 7 October 2020 along with the album artwork, tracklisting and pre-order options.[15]
