Fionn Whitehead (born 1996 or 1997) is an English actor whose first major role was as the protagonist in Dunkirk, the 2017 war film directed by Christopher Nolan.[1] Whitehead first acted in the 2016 ITV miniseries Him.

Career

He began acting at the Orange Tree Theatre when he was 13 years old, then went to Richmond College and entered the National Youth Theatre's summer course.[2] By 2015, he was an aspiring actor who worked at a coffee shop in Waterloo, London. He starred in the 2016 British miniseries Him.[3] He also acted in a stage performance of Glenn Waldron's Natives.[4]

He was surprised to be cast as the main protagonist of Christopher Nolan's film Dunkirk, which was released in 2017. Nolan compared Whitehead to "a young Tom Courtenay".[3]

Whitehead will appear in director Richard Eyre's film The Children Act opposite Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci.[3] Whitehead has also been cast to star in director Sebastian Schipper's drama Caravan, which is in development.[5]

Whitehead is signed with the agency UTA.[4]

Personal life

Fionn (pronounced "fin") Whitehead was born in 1996 or 1997,[6] and is a native of London.[7] He was named after Irish folk legend Fionn mac Cumhaill.[8] His parents are Linda and Tim, the latter a jazz musician. Whitehead, who has three older siblings, grew up in Richmond, London. Yahoo! Movies said Whitehead was raised "in an artistic household".[9][10] Growing up, he aspired to be a guitarist, a rugby player, and a breakdancer.[6][11]
