Star Trek XII is the currently untitled sequel to J. J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek. It is currently scheduled for release in 2011.

Background

In June 2008, it was reported that Paramount Pictures were already keen to sign the main producers of the 2009 Star Trek film, J. J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci for a sequel.[1] It was reported in March 2009 that the five had been signed as producers for the film with the script to be written again by Orci and Kurtzman with Lindelof joining the writing team. A preliminary script is thought to be due for delivery by Christmas 2009 for a 2011 release.[2][3] In May 2009, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman confirmed the status of sequel stating, "We greenlit 'Star Trek 2' several weeks before the release of '1' because we knew what we had".[4]

Naming

J.J. Abrams has said that the sequel will have a subtitle rather than a number, in other words, it will not be called Star Trek 12 or Star Trek XII.[5]

Plot

Although the script has yet to be written, the writers have speculated on the scope of the fictional universe in which they are now writing. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have stated that due to the alternate reality created in the previous film, none of the events of the original series are set in stone. Thus certain events and character backstories may have been changed in certain ways, and none of the main characters' futures are guaranteed to unfold as they unfolded in the television series, or films.[6]

Cast

As is standard practice, the main cast of Star Trek were signed for two sequels. However, it is currently unknown which cast members will be returning for the sequel.

William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original television series and was not included in the 2009 film, has already said that he would be delighted to appear in the sequel.[7][8] In April 2009, rumors spread that Shatner and Paramount were in talks, but it was later revealed that no such talks had yet taken place.[9]
