I removed Carly's bulky discography from this page and created a new page at Carly Simon discography. I believe it was taking up a bit more space than necesary, and I feel that the setup on the main page looks better. --Chris 23:29, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should Carly be listed as a Jewish American and African American singer because of her ancestry?

I don't have an opinion one way or another and I don't know that we should get into the business of defining someone's race. I think the person themselves should define their race if they are so inclined. Just as a data point, I found the following quote from Simon from an interview she did in July, 2004: [1]

• It's pretty interesting. It didn't matter as much because I'm a singer, not an actress, but my face is more acceptable in a way now than when I first came on the scene, because I'm part black. My mother's mother was black. I'm Jewish, black, Cuban, and French.

It sounds to me that she considers herself multiracial. Following the argument to its logical conclusion we would need to put her in all four categories.

It is my understanding that Carly Simon got her start in the music business as a songwriter in the well known Brill Building in New York City, NY. I don't have any references for this understanding, but have heard it numerious times. On August 12, 2007, 72.68.165.124 made the following addition to the "Family" Section in "Biography" referring to Carly's mother, Andrea Louise Simon and cites Marie Brenner, "I Never Sang for My Mother", Vanity Fair, August 1995:

• [She] claimed that her mother, Maria Heinemann (a secretary of the novelist Thomas Mann) was Moorish and the illegitimate child of a king of Spain.

I have found a transcription of the cited article [2] and the complete paragraph is:

• Andrea Heinemann was slim and short. With long curly hair and unusual style. She wore velvet dresses with saddle shoes. She was a self-dramatizer. Grandiose, exuberant, and imperious. She later reminded friends of Lena Horne. Andrea was given to vivid statements that may or may not have been true. She claimed that her mother was Moorish, the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso of Spain--although the Moors were expelled from Spain in the 17th century. According to Max Schuster's daughter Pearl London, the young Andrea Heinemann was overtly sensual, discomfiting the women in her mother's set by giving off sexual vibrations.

It seems to me that that the intent of complete paragraph is that Andrea Louise Simon may have said that her mother was Moorish and that she was the illegitimate child of a king of Spain but that this was a delusion or a "tall tale" that was not true. Therefor 72.68.165.124 should not take the 4th sentence in the paragraph out of context and present it as a true statement about Carly Simon's grandmother.
