Dennis Richmond (born May 26 1943) is the current news co-anchor of Oakland, CA-based KTVU's flagship news program, The Ten O'Clock News.

A Vietnam War veteran, Richmond grew up in Rossford, Ohio and graduated from Rossford High School. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit. He then attended Columbia University on a journalism scholarship which he was offered while working at KTVU.

Richmond is a member of the board of directors of the Child Abuse Consortium which is a Californian statewide government agency. In addition to that, he has also been the General Chairperson of the YMCA fundraising drive for Alameda County. He has also served in the Oakland: Mayor's Blue Ribbon Committee to Save High School Sports. He is a long time resident of San Ramon, California.

On camera he is very professional, however at times he has been reported to be flamboyant and flashy. He wears lots of jewelry, "more than Elaine [his co-anchor]"[1] he once quipped. On air, he often wears too much make up. This gives his luscious chocolate-colored skin a sickly, grey hue, and makes him look a bit like a granite statue.

Career

He joined KTVU in 1968[1] as a clerk typist, and was elevated to the anchor position in 1976. At the time he was one of the few people of African ancestry to hold such a position, and also one of very few young people. He is characterized by his omnipresent mustache and deep rich voice. He co-anchored alongside Barbara Simpson from 1978 to 1986 when Elaine Corral took her place. In March 1998, Leslie Griffith, a longtime reporter, took her place. This pairing lasted until November 2006.

He recently successfully underwent neck surgery and returned to the anchor desk. There are reports circulating that he will retire in the spring of 2008.

Both he and Elaine play themselves in the movie, The Net.

He co-anchors The Ten O'Clock News and "KTVU Channel 2 News at 6" with Julie Haener.

Awards

He has won several awards including the Humanitarian Award of Oakland, the highest honor given in that city and the Black Media Coalition Journalist of the Year Award. He was honored as the Good Scout of the year by the San Francisco Bay Area Council, Boy Scouts of America in 2004.

With him leading the news team, KTVU has won several Emmys and Radio and Television News Directors Association awards.

Richmond also received an Award of Distinction from Rossford High School, as a distinguished graduate.[2]
