XMission Deletion

Can I ask what was "blatant" about the advertising on the now deleted XMission page? I believe it referenced the historical context of Utah's first ISP and wasn't an ad for selling services. The fact that the page wasn't written or edited by me or XMission staff supports this. I'd like to resolve this with you directly, but if it can't be done, I will request a review on your speedy deletion.Pete Ashdown (talk) 07:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The page was edited by you, Pete Ashdown, who the article claims was the founder of XMission, in November 2005 (at the least), so saying that "the page wasn't written or edited by me or XMission staff" isn't exactly true. Advertising doesn't necessarily have to be written or edited by representatives of the company anyway; sentences that have a promotional tone, such as "XMission established itself from the beginning as a computer savvy ISP" do not conform to Wikipeida's neutral point of view policy and in this circumstance, appear to be promotional. Additionally, the article has no references whatsoever, which means that it does not conform to Wikipedia's verifiability policy either, and only provided a single external link to XMission's homepage.
In the meantime, I have restored the article to User:Pashdown/XMission for you to view or work on. Before you do, though, please read Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline, since you have a relationship with the subject of the article. It will be very important to add multiple reliable, independent sources to the article so that you can back up the claims made in it and prove that XMission is notable. These can be magazine or newspaper articles or reputable online sources (i.e. major news sites). I will be happy to help, as well, and if you can provide some sources for me I'll do my best to improve the article as well. Let me know if you have any questions. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The minor edits I made in 2005 were spelling, changing the reference to my sister from "wife", and adding a link to the home page. Do you think that they detracted from the copy written by others in an advertorial sense? Was there an excessive conflict in correcting the fact that I'm not married to my sister? You're asking me to fix your stated problems with the page while I am bound by conflict of interest. If you look at the discussion on the Wikipedia page about me, you will find that I have always tried to be very careful about COI. If you had problems with the neutrality of the page, why the rapid deletion rather than an edit? As I understand rapid deletion, it's reserved for spam pages. Why do you think that the page existed for over two years if it was spam? Why not a vote for deletion? Here are some collected news articles about XMission (lower half of the page) if you want references. I don't think it's proper that I post them though.Pete Ashdown (talk) 17:57, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coaching on near empty articles.

There's an article on Inline Design that is essentially empty. It's new but I still think it's a little too sparse. Is there a template or {{tag}} to express this? Padillah 17:17, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You might try {{expand}} for that. Cheers! Tuvok[T@lk/Improve me] 17:24, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User Page: Noahcs

Hi Ioeth,

I was just looking at recent changes, and then noticed this user's user page.

He says 'Hello, and welcome to my Wikipedia site. Its still under construction, so please be patience.' Is he allowed to say that it is his 'Wikipedia site'?

This is the user page : User:Noahcs

Yeah, there's nothing about that wording that violates Wikipedia's userpage guideline. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 18:00, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mainspace Edits?

Hi,

I am sorry for asking you so many questions... but what is a Mainspace Edit, and what edits are classed as mainspace edits. Is tagging for deletion using Twinkle or tagging using Friendly classed as a Mainspace edit?

The Helpful One (Talk) (Contributions) 18:11, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A mainspace edit is any edit to an article, so yes, tagging with Twinkle or Friendly counts as a mainspace edit. It's no problem for me to answer your questions, but if you want faster answers, you can contact me via the IM client of your choice. You can find my IM contact info on my userpage. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 20:34, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks for noticing. I've been getting a lot of flack lately. It's nice to get a compliment like that. Toddst1 15:28, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! It comes with the territory, unfortunately...which is why we have Barnstars, I guess! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:40, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Empire Beauty School

Hi Loeth,

I am having some serious issues with fixing one of the Wikipedia Pages. Empire Beauty School (for some reason I can't add a wikipage for them) purchased ALL the schools mentioned in the Wiki Post for Regis_Corporation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regis_Corporation )

I cannot fix the article because linking to an Empire Beauty School post is impossible, since it says that the Empire Beauty School is spam, but the Regis one is legit? It's a problem that I cannot fix without adding a Wikipedia page for Empire Beauty School

I have already created a test account for it under my username : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wehberf/Empire_Beauty_School

It's painfully incomplete... and I plan on finishing it today, as long as you guys agree not to just delete all my efforts.. as I clearly argued the article regarding the schools are already in Wikipedia, the problem is that the article is inaccurate as Regis does not own the schools anymore, Empire does. In order for me to correct this issue I need to be able to add an Empire Beauty School page. Wehberf 17:34, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anarchism in Cuba

I'm really curious as to why something I wrote in my sandbox needs to be "moved" instead of cut and pasted. The page history should be irrelevant, as if I'd written it in Word or something. And so ya know, when you had to remove stuff from my sandbox, you inadvertantly missed a bunch of other stuff that got messed up by doing that move. Murderbike (talk) 23:59, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bah! Now I notice that I have to recreate my sandbox, since it got moved. Why does this make sense? Murderbike (talk) 00:08, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry for the inconvenience. All I know is that there was a CSD G6 tag on Anarchism in Cuba reuqesting that the history of your sandbox be merged into the page, so I obliged. I went ahead and recreated your sandbox page (empty, but with the header). If there's anything else you need me to do, let me know. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how much it matters, but Anarchism in Cuba now has the history of my sandbox, which goes back a lot farther than that article. It seems like that could be an issue, though I don't know how much of one. Should/can it be reverted to only have it's own history? Murderbike (talk) 02:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If it's absolutely necessary, we could put a request into oversight to have the changes that were made to your Sandbox when it was just your Sandbox hidden, but they usually only do that for changes that violate WP:BLP. I'm not too worried about it, but if you'd like the changes hidden, just let me know and I'll try and get it sorted out. Unfortunately, once a history merge has been done, there is little chance of being able to undo it. So sorry again for the trouble, and be sure to let me know what you'd like me to do, if anything. Cheers! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 04:43, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Meh, I'm not gonna worry too much about it, it just seems weird the way the whole thing happened, totally unnecessary. And seems weird that now when people look at the history of Anarchism in Cuba, they'll see a bunch of other articles I've written. But again, whatever, if it's a hassle to change things, I'm not gonna sweat it. Murderbike (talk) 19:31, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He was a very important and key person. If its references and citations you need, I will provide that. He is in hundreds of books and articles.--Persianhistory2008 (talk) 01:36, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding those references, they're great! Also, great job expanding the article. I think it's good to stand on its own now. Great job! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 15:30, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Patrolling" pages

I've been reviewing the new pages and I've seen the link at the bottom (sometimes) "Mark this page as patrolled". I have a couple of questions:

  1. What does that mean?
  2. What does that do?
  3. How do I find my patrolled pages? (yeah, I clicked it to see what would happen and I can't find those particular pages to save my life).

Thanks for all the help you've been. I appreciate it. Padillah (talk) 13:19, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Deletion of Jeremy Earl

I recently added my a wiki for my bio as a cast member of the movie "Forever Strong" which is found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_Strong

I simply clicked on my name from that Forever Strong page and began writing my bio, at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jeremy_Earl&action=edit

Upon logging in today to update the page with more information, i found it deleted. What do i have to go about doing to get that page back without having to retype it? And why was it deleted? I did read through the explanation pages, but don't understand how the page fit those criteria.

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jearl (talkcontribs) 18:07, 5 December 2007

First of all, welcome to Wikipedia! I left a message on your talk page that will inform you about autobiographical additions to Wikipedia which I think you should look over first. It mentions "notability", which is something that all article subjects must have in order to be included. Frankly, just being cast in a movie, especially one that isn't out yet, does not meet the notability guideline, which is why I deleted the article. Once the movie is out and reviewed, especially if the reviews mention you in particular, that will be the appropriate time for an article about you to be added. However, it is still recommended that you not add it, as it is a conflict of interest. By that time, if you are getting that much media attention, though, someone else will add it. demolition man... communication methods of IT specialists ??

Hi, Loeth ! please have a look at my talk's site, then you know what's about still to be cleared. Generally I'd like to have back my autobiographical datas (keyword "IMC OnAir") one of your mouse clicks destroyed unfairly. Thank's --ElJay Arem (talk) 18:25, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

International Network to Promote the Rule of Law

Hi Loeth,

I created this page the other day, but it appears that it fell under the "blatant advertising" category for deletion. I have since made some changes as this is a legitimate organization. I understand that being legitamite in itself does not make for a valid wiki entry, so can you please offer some insight on how I can change it to make it valid? I recently edited and reposted it (sorry if that was the worng thing to do, I am new to this!).

Thanks for you help! Jerdossy (talk) 20:15, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article looks good now. The "Membership" section, which is no longer there, coupled with no references is what made me decide to delete it under G11. Since there are good external links now and it reads more like an encyclopedia article, it looks much better! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 16:23, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BrightHouse Page

Hey Loeth,

what exactly went wrong with this page and how do you think i could get it back up? there are lots of companies of its kind and BrightHouse in particular has a very unique history and background and i do not think should be exempt from this site. let me know what you think. thanks for your help.

The problem with it was that it was written like a marketing brochure, complete with ™ symbols. The article also lacked good sources, especially primary sources. If you can provide some good primary sources to me, I'll consider restoring the article. Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 16:27, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Hey Ioeth, thanks for both adding the notability sub-tags and the kind words. It's really you who deserve the credit for a great little add-on. Keep up the great work with Friendly :) ~Eliz81(C) 18:33, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hoorah!

Thanks for the barnstar! And thanks for the brilliantly implemented feature, it works perfectly. Although when it finishes tagging it reloads the page and you end up at the target rather than the redirect itself, so you might want to fix that (it's a bit confusing). Otherwise, perfect! --Closedmouth (talk) 04:05, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you like it! I'm looking into how to handle loading the redirect without redirecting, so hopefully that'll be implemented soon. I'm not 100% sure that it's possible, though, so we'll have to see! Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 04:07, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Famous Americans

I think you are adding these inappropriately, and may well be in breach of WP:SPAM. The one I first saw was completely the wrong person, plus you are adding them at the top of what ever section you add them too, which is usually wrong. You should not add things to References sections that have not actually been used to write the article, but all your recent edits seem just to add this link en masse. If you are found to be spamming, ALL these links will be reverted by bot. Johnbod (talk) 17:45, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

This work needs to be be cited properly

2. There is use of sentences and paragraphs directly from Famous Americans.net that are NOT cited with a "refernce note" nor are there any references whatsoever so here we add it as a reference as a direct numerical citation unless the Article has no "footnoted" citations and only general references. Then I just add it to the list on references.

3. In terms how the reference is listed, if there is a "footnote" it shows in the order as it appears. If there is no "footnote: then it is listed alphabetically.

4. As for putting the wrong person in the reference, I will be sure to double check the names in the future.

Now I realize you and the other Wikipedians are doing a fabulous job on monitoring this thr project. Please advise how we may mutually correct this to everyone's satisfaction. Thank you
