Lalah's Dilemma is the 40th episode[1] of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Plot summary

The White Base has returned to Konpei (formerly named Solomon). A repair crew approaching the ship surprises Bright. He can't believe Amuro has evolved so much on his skills, wondering at the same time whether it will bring trouble in the future. He doesn't believe, though, that he is a psychic, like Matilda once had said. Chief engineer Mosk Han boards the ship to upgrade the Gundam. Mosk meets Amuro and explains to he and Bright he's developed a magnetic coating system for the Gundam's joints to maximize mobility and prevent overheating.

At Granada, Kycilia receives Char's report, which tells of Challia's death in combat. The report says Challia was too slow to keep up with the Gundam's Newtype pilot. Kycilia starts to see the war's future is in jeopardy. A soldier reminds her they still have Granada, A Baoa Qu, and the Solar Ray.

At a Side 3 colony, Zeon soldiers are forcibly removing citizens out so the colony is converted into a giant laser weapon. At the Zum City palace, Degwin tells his son Gihren that the people need to be protected; Gihren says the population must be controlled so the strongest survive. Degwin tells Gihren that he is like Hitler, who had the same ideas a long time ago. Gihren counters that the Federation's biggest weakness is democracy, promising to be better than Hitler. Gihren goes to A Baoa Qu to lead the battle.

Federation Forces are detected on the Zanzibar's screen. Char sends Lalah to her first battle. He tells the Rick Dom pilots (escorts) not to treat her differently. Lalah easily destroys the Federation ships and the Rick Dom pilots see no need to give her cover so they pull out. Feeling exposed, Lalah panics and Char launches in his red Gelgoog leaving Mulligan in command of the ship. The Federation ships fire at Lalah, who says doesn't want to die. Char tells the Rick Doms to move forward, but they think it's stupid. Lalah destroys the last ship; Char tells her not to do anything rash. The battle is over and he congratulates her for her good work.

At Konpei, the Federation deploy their fleets continuing Operation Star One. Their goal is to attack Zeon's remaining strongholds. White Base is assigned to the 13th Autonomous Corps but aren't cleared to launch yet. Mosk Han tells a distraught Amuro to trust in his theory, Amuro gives him thanks. Mosk asks Amuro to deliver him personally the Gundam's newest comat data. White Base launches to link up with the rest of the fleet. Amuro tests the Gundam and finds out it has improved dramatically. Sayla asks him to be careful.

On the Zanzibar Char asks the Rick Dom pilots why they pulled out from Lalah. They say they can't comprehend that a Newtype pilot is superior than Char. Char sends a progress report to Kycilia on the Elmeth's performance. Kycilia is impressed, and tells Char to continue Lalah's supervision.

Amuro has launched to practice in his upgraded Gundam. He feels a calling and several Federation ships come under attack. Amuro heads to the scene. He mentally feels Lalah calling him out and is then attacked by the Elmeth's bits. Char also attacks Amuro but Lalah asks him to pull out because the Gundam is dangerous. She tries to shoot at Amuro, however Char keeps getting in the way. Char notices that the Gundam is moving faster than before. Amuro manages to blow the Gelgoog's arm off. Lalah frantically asks him to retreat, Char reassures her the damage is not serious. Lalah mentally yells at Amuro that he is a bad person for attacking Char. Lalah and Char retreat. Char later realizes that the Gundam pilot is the cause for Lalah's headaches.
