Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names

This page is for bringing attention to usernames which may be in violation of Wikipedia's username policy. Before listing a username here, consider if it should be more appropriately reported elsewhere, or if it needs to be reported at all:
- Report blatantly inappropriate usernames, such as usernames that are obscene or inflammatory, to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention.
- For other cases involving vandalism, personal attacks or other urgent issues, try Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents; blatant vandalism can also be reported at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, which is sometimes a better option.
Do NOT post here if:
- the user in question has made no recent edits.
- you wish to have the block of a user reviewed. Instead, discuss the block with the blocking administrator (see also Wikipedia:Blocking policy § Unblocking).
Before adding a name here you MUST ensure that the user in question:
- has been warned about their username (with e.g. {{subst:uw-username}}) and has been allowed time to address the concern on their user talk page.
- has disagreed with the concern, refused to change their username and/or continued to edit without replying to the warning.
- is not already blocked.
If, after having followed all the steps above, you still believe the username violates Wikipedia's username policy, you may list it here with an explanation of which part of the username policy you think has been violated. After posting, please alert the user of the discussion (with e.g. {{subst:UsernameDiscussion}}). You may also invite others who have expressed concern about the username to comment on the discussion by use of this template.
Add new requests below, using the syntax {{subst:rfcn1|username|2=reason ~~~~}}.

I am concerned that this username may not be in keeping with the policy that reads "Usernames mentioning or referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions (e.g. AIDS, amputation, Asperger syndrome, etc.)." I feel that it is disparaging to those with mental disabilities. Kukini hablame aqui 04:00, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

- Allow I'm assuming good faith, and that the policy is really targeted more at something like User:RetardsEatPoop. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 04:18, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Note, the policy refers to ""Usernames mentioning or referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions" and does not refer only to those usernames that are "attacking" people. --Kukini hablame aqui 04:23, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Query - Something to consider, there are roughly 2,600 users on Wikipedia with names that start with 'Crazy', visible here. What's the difference? - CHAIRBOY (☎) 04:32, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- ResponseThere are many ways that "crazy" is used in positive manners, such as "I am A Wild and Crazy Guy!" (Ala Steve Martin) The term "retard" is never used in any way but negatively. Regardless, if the policy is broke, we should fix it. Kukini hablame aqui 04:37, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - may be a subjective judgement on my part, but 'retard' seems much more insulting than 'crazy'. I've heard 'crazy' used in a complimentary way (i.e. daring or fearless) but never 'retard'. RJASE1 Talk 04:38, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- You mentioned yourself that the policy bans usernames "mentioning or referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions", there's no escape clause for the condition being used in a 'positive manner'. The policy is probably fine, it depends on level headed interpretation. I refer you to my initial comment above supporting my 'Allow' recommendaton. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 04:41, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- I feel quite level-headed about this. The username refers to a disability and thus is not in keeping with policy. It helps that it also refers to the disability in a disparaging manner. If it were in a positive manner, I would feel quite differently. Kukini hablame aqui 04:46, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - I support Kukini. There are some common-sense limits to WP:AGF - "gay" is a term we generally block on sight, even if the user had a possible good faith motive. For example, the username User:Gayboy might be intended as a self-reference to levity and jolliness, but it's going to be blocked anyway. RJASE1 Talk 04:49, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

This username seems inappropriate for at least one, and perhaps two reasons: the user runs a website of the same name ("Newton Falls Leader") and so appears to violate the policy against "Usernames that promote a company". Since the company is a community website for Newton Falls, Ohio, it may also violate the policy against "Usernames that contain a domain or imply a web address". The user himself has noted the confusion caused by this name here [1] and I asked him to resolve this a little over 24 hours ago with no response yet. Ruhrfisch 04:31, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Weak Disallow - Appears to be in violation of policy re. an organization. Sometimes I feel like we are a tad overkill on these though...so I am going with weak for now. I might learn why it should be different from the group process. --Kukini hablame aqui 07:36, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow + comment. In the interest of getting his website listed, this user has verbally abused other editors repeatedly and at length, as illustrated by his posts on the following pages:
- • Talk:Newton Falls, Ohio/Archive 1 (January, February) • Talk:Newton Falls, Ohio (March)
- • Wikipedia:Association of Members' Advocates/Requests/January 2007/NewtonFallsLeader
- Normally I provide diffs in these situations. The bulk of the content on the three pages consists of the user's diatribes, so they are easy to find. — Athænara ✉ 08:13, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow Is a domain name. Regardless, the user will likely get blocked soon for personal attacks. As WP:CABAL states, "When you start accusing everyone of being in on a conspiracy, you shouldn't be surprised if they decide to confirm your paranoia by banding together against you." ShadowHalo 09:54, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow as the entire contribution of this editor has been the self-promotion of this business/endeavour, which testifies to this name's preeminence as only a company name. There is no accident here, nor (upon reviewing cites) anything benign going on. Shenme 09:57, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow single purpose account for the purposes of pushing this website. Of course this is not going to solve the problem of whether the website is going to be included as an external link or not. Cheers Lethaniol 11:01, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow - fails WP:U per nom. Also edits show highly likely to meet WP:SPA & took out a very strange and invective-laden case at WP:AMA - Alison☺ 11:19, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Disallow — clearly promotional, as above noted incidents indicate. — ERcheck (talk) 11:41, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
